Into the book
“The biggest reason I got into interviews is because the ‘miracle of time’ accompanies them.
An interview is impossible to hold if the interviewer and the interviewee do not have the will to give their full time to the other person.
Giving your time means sharing a part of your life.
I find this so beautiful.
Moreover, don't the words derived from the interview seep into the time of someone who reads it and leave a ripple effect?
It may sound too romantic, but I like interviews because I believe that it is something that can be called romantic.
“The Actor’s Room” is a result based on that romance.”
--- p.11 From the "Prologue"

“I believe that the history of a person’s life is engraved in space.
I also think that the space where you spend time makes you a person.
So I wanted to ask.
Where can an actor who is immersed in his character return to himself?
“What does that space mean?”
--- p.11 From the "Prologue"

“I started interviewing others because I wanted to know them, but that path also gave me time to reflect on myself.
To me, who posed a question in the name of a question, the interviewees returned an exclamation point about their attitude toward life.
Rather than existing as a complete being, it also showed the beauty of advancing step by step with perseverance and effort as the driving force.
“I learned from them that talent isn’t just about being able to act flawlessly, but also about the perseverance to keep trying.”
--- p.12 From the "Prologue"

“Studying is a butt fight.
The one who sits the longest is more likely to win.
I wanted to try acting a little differently, so I tried changing my method, but it didn't work.
It's back to 'let's just go back to butt fighting'.
“I wanted to do that at least for the process of attaching the character to my body.”
--- p.38 From “Actor Park Jung-min’s Room”

“Director Na Hong-jin once said something like that.
'An artist cannot choose his era.
Since we have been chosen, we must accept it and move forward.'
As soon as I heard it, I said, "Wow."
In the end, I think what's important is finding a way to blend my colors into the environment I'm given.
“Rather than embracing and worrying about things that cannot be changed.”
--- p.90 From "Actress Chun Woo-hee's Room"

“Because it is a visible job, there is a longing to be loved and loved.
The support I get from family, friends, and audiences is priceless.
But I think what's equally important is the support I receive from others.
It could be self-satisfaction or encouragement.
That kind of heart is what drives me.”
--- p.141 From “Actor Ahn Jae-hong’s Room”

“I think that as a creative person, rather than blindly following a certain trend, there is a need to suggest it.
It takes effort.
If we have any privilege, it's probably that we still have many opportunities to challenge ourselves, so we want to be more flexible.
I think we should take responsibility without being humble.”
--- p.169 From “Actor Byun Yo-han’s Room”

“If it’s a good piece, I don’t care how I come across.
I just want to use it correctly in my work.
“If there’s a moment when someone needs to shine, I think it’s right to be willing to act as a reflector.”
--- p.206 From "Actor Lee Je-hoon's Room"

“It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
When you film an action movie, it's hard because there's a lot of action, and if there's no action, you think, 'I'd rather do it with my body.'
I think all actors have the same handicap.
“A handicap that everyone has is not a handicap.”
--- p.245 From "Actor Joo Ji-hoon's Room"

“Personally, I like the Chinese idiom ‘韜光養晦’.
It means 'to wait for the right time without revealing yourself and to develop your skills.'
Whether it’s skill or character, if you build it up little by little, I think there will come a time when it will elicit a good response.”
--- p.277 From "Actor Kim Nam-gil's Room"

“For example, if the image of Yoo Tae-oh is a brand, there could be things like, ‘We can expect this from Yoo Tae-oh.’
“At that time, whether to break or meet those expectations will be my choice and strategy.”
--- p.340 From "Actor Yoo Tae-oh's Room"

"It wasn't the accumulation of passing auditions, passing auditions, and passing that made me who I am today. It was failing, failing, failing hundreds of times that made me who I am today. So I don't really regret missing out."
--- p.365 From “Actor Oh Jung-se’s Room”

“Acting is about living.
It's about surviving.
I consider this assignment that fell to me as homework.
My head is full of homework solutions.
It's like embracing the pain yourself, but there's nothing I can do about it.
Because that's fate.
You've given me this much of a burden, and I won't carry it? That's ridiculous.
“Because I chose this path.”
--- p.406 From “Actor Go Doo-shim’s Room”

Get out of your role in the work
A place where you can see the actor's bare face

You are invited to the 'Actor's Room'.

'An actor is someone who tries to convey sincerity through fiction (fake stories).' Actors speak to us not as themselves, but as characters in works such as movies and dramas.
So, if an actor were to step out of his role and return to himself, where would that place be?

“I believe that the history of a person’s life is engraved in space.

I also think that the space where you spend time makes you a person.

So I wanted to ask.

Where can an actor who is immersed in his character return to himself?

“What does that space mean?”

This book began with a question posed by film journalist and writer Siwoo Jeong, who was curious about how actors live their lives in their private spaces.
“Where is your space?” the author asked the actors carefully and thoughtfully, and the question soon led to someone’s “theater,” a “comic book store,” a “drive,” “Jeju Island,” and even a “physical therapy room.”
In this way, the special concept of an interview series titled “Jung Si-woo’s Aroom” was born, where we meet the honest lives of actors in a “space where actors return to their own faces.” The book contains the precious spaces of 10 of those actors.

Park Jung-min, Chun Woo-hee, Ahn Jae-hong, Byun Yo-han, Lee Je-hoon,
Joo Ji-hoon, Kim Nam-gil, Yoo Tae-oh, Oh Jung-se, Go Doo-shim
The real thoughts and real voices of the actors we love

The actors who gave themselves space to tell their own stories.
A conversation with 10 actors who have the attitude of expanding the world of acting at their own pace, who know how to use even trial and error and failure as stepping stones to their own world, and who know how to generously share the insights they have gained from it rather than running like racehorses toward the success set by the world.
Through the actor's honest voice, which has never been heard before, we hope to provide small hints and courage to those who are deeply concerned about the direction of their work and life.

“This is a place with so many memories.

Sometimes I walk alone, sometimes I jump for joy,
It was a space where I stayed lost in thought.

I wanted to keep coming.

“I want to walk here again.”
- From 'Actor Byun Yo-han's Room'

As you read the interview, you will feel as if you are sitting in the conversation between the actor and the writer.
If you're a fan of the actor featured in the interview, you'll rediscover his hidden charms and deepen your affection for him. If you're not familiar with the actor, this collection of interviews will spark your interest in his world of work.
How can a space endowed with meaning be so three-dimensional and poignant?
This book vividly unfolds the actor's story and presents the experience of sharing the space between the reader and the actor.

“Someone’s space was a comfort,
It was a storehouse of inspiration for some,
It was home to some,
For some, it was the starting point that made them who they are today.”

The book includes not only interviews with the actors, but also 'author's essays' inspired by the stories the actors shared.
The author's story, in which she gained a deeper understanding of herself through interviews and discovered the joy of creating her own special space, provides an opportunity to examine the space surrounding each of us.

The time spent accompanying others through a space filled with their memories ultimately allows readers to explore their own "room" through the actor's voice.
I hope that the fragments of an actor's life revealed in "The Actor's Room" will provide you with inspiration, rather than the answers to life's problems.

“Acting is about surviving, surviving.

Because it's fate.
“Because I chose this path.”
