A farewell to a long yet very short childhood, the beginning of the world of Cheon Seon-ran.
“Find the secret key, a labyrinthine adventure!” In 2000, just as the chaos of the end of the century was beginning to subside, “Digimon Adventure” was first aired in Korea with its exciting opening song.
Children at the time were captivated by the story of seven ordinary elementary school students who became the "chosen ones" and embarked on an adventure in the digital world.
The same was true for eleven-year-old Cheon Seon-ran.
For him, who spoke to the monitor and worried that his Digimon might not have woken up yet inside the computer, and who firmly believed that he would one day go to the digital world, Digimon Adventure was his first science fiction and the first work that led him into the world of creation.
"Anyway, Digimon" is a story about the excitement and sadness of childhood, when children were excited by the adventures of fighting against evil, and when they were comforted by "characters who were hurt, lonely, and afraid, but could evolve again at any time with a word of courage and comfort." It is also a story about the beginning of the current world of Cheon Seon-ran, who moved on to writing through such sadness.
“In a house filled with sunset, sitting close to the TV in front of the entrance, eleven-year-old me, having just watched the first episode of Digimon Adventure, listened to Ricky’s narration and realized that my long, yet very short, summer vacation had begun.”

Into the book
Sitting glued to the TV in front of the house, filled with the sunset, eleven-year-old me, having just watched the first episode of Digimon Adventure, listened to Ricky's narration and realized that my long, yet very short, summer vacation had begun.
I became that child who was chosen by myself.
--- p.23
My family doesn't know that I did this to get into the digital world.
I never said I wanted to go.
If you read this book, you might be surprised to learn that I was so passionate about the digital world.
There was a reason for trying so secretly to overcome the world.
I wanted to go there alone.
I wanted to just burst out of the world, like punching a hole through a window.
Without a trace.
Now that I think about it, I think I wanted revenge for my loneliness.
--- p.25
These are the scenes I remember from my childhood.
I was staring intently at a reservoir full of tadpoles.
I was standing on a fake road for children's safety education, overgrown with grass between the bricks, waiting for the traffic light to not turn on, as no one was looking for me.
Sitting in the audience seats of an empty indoor badminton court with no matches taking place.
I barely managed to climb up the rock climbing wall installed on the outside wall of the indoor gymnasium by stepping on a single stone.
Sitting in front of the cold stairs of the house all year round.
Sitting at the table at the end of the living room, eating something.
And watching TV in the red living room.
I was alone like that all along.
--- p.30
It would be fun to be with Agumon, Padakmon is really cute, and Piyomon is cool, but I still liked Papimon who stayed by Matthew's side when he was lonely, and buried himself in his loneliness without nagging him.
I thought it would be nice if I had a Papimon too.
Every moment I was alone, I imagined that Papimon, or my Digimon, was by my side.
Looking back, I think I was stuck on the border between pure imagination and psychotic delusion.
Still, the digital world, this world and the world in another dimension, were a great comfort to my lonely self.
--- p.34
I also like that Digimon's evolutionary form isn't set, and that evolution isn't a complete growth.
Digimon can evolve into any form at any time and then return.
If you evolve incorrectly, you can just evolve again.
I often recall this sentence when I feel dissatisfied with myself or something feels wrong.
'It's okay, you can evolve again.'
--- p.46
That night, I watched Digimon Adventure again from episode 1, which I had forgotten about.
I felt some comfort in the fact that that world was still there, that there was a whale trapped beyond the monitor, just as frustrated as I was.
Well then, let's believe a little more.
I can still go into the digital world.
I still have a chance to be chosen.
I don't know what the sentence given to me is yet, so I might find out as I live, so I'll wait a little longer...
In my late teens, I dreamed of the digital world once again.
--- pp.53-54
What my friend said then is one of the life milestones that I still cherish.
Not everyone starts out perfectly prepared.
We press the piano keys without any preparation, draw pictures with crayons, and kick a soccer ball without knowing the rules.
When we start something, we don't know everything about it.
I move forward, feeling for things like a dim light and shadows of unknown size.
Studying is a follow-up step to learning more, not something you have to start from.
As my friend said, I have imagination and I know the letters that are the tools of writing.
Then you can use it.
--- p.65
Instead of saying I'm not going anywhere, I hug my mom tightly.
Instead of saying sorry, say you love me.
That's how we check in with each other.
I became that child who was chosen by myself.

Publisher's Review
What was waiting for the young 'me' in an unfamiliar world
At the age of eleven, I was in turmoil due to my father's overseas business trip and a sudden move, with whom I was close friends.
During a time when she “didn’t know if I was sad or the world was sad, I was just sad all around,” and “all I could do was look at the pond that had turned black with tadpoles,” [Digimon Adventure] was a refuge for Cheon Seon-ran.
He said that the moment he first saw [Digimon Adventure], he felt not only the excitement of starting an adventure and the joy of seeing a new cartoon, but also a sense of relief.
“There really is another world!”
After learning about [Digimon Adventure], the author desperately wanted to go to the digital world.
“I wanted to go there alone.
I wanted to just burst out of the world, like punching a hole through a window.
Without a trace.
Now that I think about it, I think I wanted revenge on my loneliness back then.” “Anyway, Digimon” is a story about the strength to overcome the frustration and loneliness of childhood.
And for the writer, that power was nothing other than imagining another world, another story.
So he continued to imagine other worlds.
Although that talent sometimes distanced the writer from the real world, the beautiful world he encountered thanks to it became the spark for the stories that created the world of Cheon Seon-ran today.
“I first realized my talent when I was twelve.
First of all, before we get into this story, I want to say that we need to think less critically about the word talent.
Society attributes genius to talent, but talent without the flashy shell is nothing more than the power to 'continue' something that suddenly appears one day, without anyone telling you to.
If I keep doing something without anyone telling me to, then I guess I have talent for it.
To me it was a story.
“A rawer story, one that could be called a delusion, before it was formalized into writing.”
“Here is my mother.
“My mother is like a new human, like an alien, like a Digimon I’ve just met.”
When I was twenty-one, my mother suddenly collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage.
The author, who met his mother again a few days later while she was in the intensive care unit after undergoing major surgery, remembers that his mother looked at him with a face like “a Digimon that had landed on a strange planet.”
“My old and young Digimon, who fought the world alone and exhausted all of its data, returning to its infancy.” He had been hoping for a Digimon to appear until his late teens, and now he has a Digimon to protect, care for, and grow up with.
But the reality of care is scary.
“That’s how I turned from twenty-one to twenty-six.
There was nothing inside me.
There was no sentence to shine.
“The world was flat and colorless.” A time when all the stories within oneself had disappeared, and all the doors that could have led to other dimensions were closed.
A time when I couldn't write anything.
But the door opens elsewhere.
"Anyway, Digimon" is a story about growing up (again) with a (disappeared) mother.
The author encounters another reason for living as she faces her mother, who suffers from dementia of unknown cause, and “the girl who strangely desperately searched for a reason for existence finally finds it.”
“Here is my mother.
Here is the mother who always told her daughter to live a little longer, and who would take her to the beach in the car at dawn whenever she seemed to be having a hard time.
I step into reality and see my mother.
“My mother is like a new human, like an alien, like a Digimon I’ve just met.”
"You leave childhood without saying goodbye, without even realizing it's gone."
The final scene of the [Digimon Adventure] movie is often talked about in the 'Digimon Generation'.
This is because it contains a story of the chosen children and Digimon who have become adults, joining forces for the last time to defeat evil, and then parting ways.
Once all missions are completed and the children become 'adults', they will face eternal banishment from the Digital World, meaning eternal separation from their Digimon friends.
This separation happens without a goodbye, at an unprepared moment.
Just as we, as adults, cannot remember the last time we had precious moments from our childhood, and as if those moments will never come again.
"Anyway, Digimon" is a story about such a separation.
This is a story of parting with the “digital world that gave me life” and my first refuge, in order to take care of my mother, who has become a child like a Digimon in the real world, that is, a Digimon that has exhausted all of its power and reverted to an infant, and it will become the farewell message of the “Digimon generation” to their childhood.
“I smile as if nothing happened, but when I think about the world I left behind and the fact that I can’t go any further, my heart sinks.
But the engraving of my mind will be a relief when viewed from the other side, and I write using that type as a woodblock.
“I write novels about my longing for the world I grew up dreaming of.”
