Description
Book Introduction
Author Son Hyeon-nyeong records the time spent with people she favors in spaces she favors, and the direct thoughts that came from that.
Author Son Hyun-nyeong's writing becomes a bright ray of hope, like a ray of light reaching out in the midst of collapse, saying, "It's okay, it's okay."
Perhaps it is even more moving because the author, who suffered pain, was able to rise again with the comfort of those around him and wrote the writings in the process.
The Youth Library version includes the author's new work, and Part 2 includes the novel "The True Story of Choi Byeong-ho."
We ask that you prepare a handkerchief for Part 2.
Based on a true story, the novel is heartbreaking and makes you reflect on the meaning of precious things.

Into the book
I've heard you say that the smell rising from the ground after it rains is the 'smell of the earth'.

As the sun gave way to the moon, we arrived in our space.
I drank some beer, washed off the sweat, and got ready to watch a movie.
We covered the wall with a white cloth and played a movie.
Sitting side by side in a small space, watching a movie with tears in my eyes, is it a sense of solidarity or the intimacy that comes from the space? It's a series of things that are possible because I've been away.

It's certainly not easy to socialize with strangers in an unfamiliar place.
I was truly grateful for your positive attitude, which included trying to see only the good in people and acknowledging differences.

--- p.29

“Hey, do you still believe in people?” I asked myself as I cried.
They say that trusting people too easily is also a problem.
Everyone tells you not to do that.
People should live by keeping an appropriate distance and trusting only that much.
It's something that you never know when it might turn around and hit you on the back of the head.
I know that too.
But that doesn't work very well.
When I look at someone's face, make eye contact and talk to them, I find myself giving my heart to them without realizing it.

--- p.40

Can't I live my life doing only what I want to do?
Is making a living doing what you love as impossible as mixing oil and water?
I have the most fun when I'm writing.
I like having time to myself.
A time to look inside myself without end.
To prevent it from collapsing, the ground is tamped down again and again.
To protect myself even if everything in the world changes.
So I have the most fun when I'm writing.

--- p.49

Who do we live with such contempt?
The internet world is full of contempt.
Contempt for appearance, contempt for taste, contempt for existence itself.
A world that despises women and men.
Think about the need and utility of contempt.
Why do we hate something so much?
Why must it be so ignored?
Why do we have to trample on someone and cover them in bad words to feel better?
Who benefits from the result?
They say that the energy it takes to hate someone is more than we can imagine.
Why should we expend that much energy ignoring and belittling someone?

--- p.130

Although Byung-ho was frightened by all the difficult terms like 'bone marrow,' 'spleen,' 'lymph node,' and 'bone marrow fluid,' he thought it would be nothing serious.
Someone did.
They say that having a bone marrow test is more painful than having a hundred appendectomies.
It really was like that.
I heard that Byung-ho was under anesthesia, but the needle being driven into his bone felt like someone was hitting his back with a hammer.
The other nurses grabbed Byung-ho's whole body.
Byung-ho clenched his teeth to hold back a loud scream that would escape his mouth if he opened it.
Even after the bone marrow test, I lay down for three hours with a sandbag on me. During that time, I looked at my mother, who sat next to me without leaving my side, and thought again.
I really have to make my mom happy.

--- p.198

I had to cheer up.
Byung-ho felt like he would die tomorrow if things continued like this.
Byung-ho realized that mental strength was important in fighting illness.
No matter how well the medicine worked and how strong your physical strength was, if you didn't have the willpower, your body wouldn't follow.
For a few days after his father left, Byung-ho and his mother lost all willpower.
My mother didn't believe that life was a roller coaster.
But the fact that Byung-jun's bone marrow matches with Byung-ho's, and that Sa-yeon was chosen and helped on the show.
When the luck that she had thought was only for other people came to her, she finally saw herself sitting on a roller coaster.
Life is a roller coaster.
The day her father came asking for money, the roller coaster she was riding went up a little and then plummeted to the ground as if to tease her.

Publisher's Review
A brief written interview with author Son Hyun-nyeong

* Which book is "I Favor You" by the author? How does it differ from previous books, and what is its significance?
- 『Natangpyeon』 is the second book.
If the previous book, "The Me of the Moment and the You of Eternity," was a desperate piece written by a writer trying to overcome countless fears and loneliness alone, "The Nadang Pyeon" is a book with a slightly different meaning.
As I passed through the long tunnel, there were people by my side who cheered me on, and there was a place where they would constantly pat me on the back and say, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”
While working on 『Natangpyeon』, I realized that I had been favoring them.
Furthermore, I wanted to convey the meaning of expressing love freely when all the things I favor are around.

* What kind of writing do you pursue?
- I think a good piece of writing is one that satisfies the following:
First, it must be written in a way that is easy to read for anyone, from elementary school students to the elderly.
Second, it must be easy to read, yet the intended meaning must be clear and consistent, in line with the purpose of the writing.
Finally, I like writing that is easy to read, has a clear topic, but has depth that leaves a lasting impression long after I close the book.
Once again, I reflect on whether my writing meets these criteria.
I would like to continue writing articles like this for a long time.

* Do you have any special methods for writing down ideas or finding materials?
- I keep thinking about the past while saying, ‘Let’s not be past-oriented.’
We reconstruct our memories by revisiting and recalling past events.
I write about it and put my own meaning into it.
Or, I quickly write down sentences that flash through my mind in a notepad.
Because it will come in handy someday.

* Is Part 2, “The Favored True Story,” a novel based on a true story?
- yes.
This is a novel adapted from a true story.
It was when I was giving a book talk in Moseulpo, Jeju.
This is the day I met Mr. ‘Byeong-ho’ (pseudonym).
I met you as a reader, and as we talked, I found out that you had a heartbreaking story.
I remember crying for a long time while listening to it.
At the same time, I wondered why humans only feel the value of something more after it has passed away.
So I wanted to convey the meaning that we should do better and express ourselves more while we are here.
I would like to express my gratitude to Byungho (pseudonym) for allowing me to write this, and I hope he stays healthy, even if only on paper.

* It seems like you think a lot about relationships with people.
- I think I'll probably be struggling, hurting, and happy in relationships until the coffin lid falls on me.
I write a lot about how we get hurt as people and ultimately overcome it as people.

* What does writing mean to you?
- It still feels like I only go to the Buddha statue when I'm sick or having a hard time.

* Has anything changed in your life since you started writing?
- Actually, I became more depressed.
Could this be called a confirmation shot of emotions?
But that's why sometimes it's amazing to see myself growing a little taller.
How much more can I grow?

* Please briefly introduce your future activities.
- During the day, I love children at a middle school, and at night, I write manuscripts to send to publishers.
Sometimes I prepare independent publications.
I want to be widely known.
I want to share my writing with more people.
