“Some people enjoy the same scenery more vividly and richly.”

How to Live a High-Resolution Life, as Told by Advertiser Yoo Byung-wook

Author Yoo Byeong-wook, who has conveyed the beauty of everyday life through 『The Joy of Thought』 and 『Discovery of the Ordinary』, shares ways to live a richer and clearer life with his new book 『The Resolution of Life』.

In fact, no one's daily life is that special.
Because ‘repeating every day’ is routine.
However, how we live each day is different for each person, as it is up to each person.
Even if we see the same scenery and eat the same food, don't some people perceive and react differently?
There are people who manage to find shining moments even in an ordinary day.
They admire vividly, as if they were traveling through everyday life, and savor each moment more deeply.
Byung-wook Yoo, author of "Life's Resolution" and creative director of TBWA, calls this kind of life a high-resolution life, and through this book, he shares ways to lead a high-resolution life.
I am even more curious about his story because his job is advertising, which requires him to be on his toes every day.

『The Resolution of Life』 is composed of three parts: Part 1: Discovery, Part 2: Savoring, and Part 3: Creation. It encourages and supports a life of discovering good things, savoring them deeply, and creating something thanks to them.
Eating my favorite cold noodles, walking alone through an art gallery, working late with coworkers, and sometimes even looking at flowers blooming on the roadside… Through everyday objects that we easily encounter around us, I convey how to live vividly.
The episodes and methods introduced in this book are not that great, but the more I read and try them, the more interesting it becomes to look at my daily life.
You will find out as you read.
That you don't need anything grand or special to live clearly.
Just as we learn about artworks from a docent at an art museum, let's follow Yoo Byung-wook's gaze.
The world you thought you knew so well will look completely new to you.

Into the book
There is such a person.
A person who is clearly in the same time and space, but I wonder how he finds such charm.

Same book.
Same music.
The same street tree we saw while walking together during lunch time.
The same car window seen together in the same season.
But when that same thing passes through that person's eyes, it seems to change into different words and come out of the body.
(…) This article is about the perspective, attitude, habits, and training of living a ‘high-resolution’ life, as told by a contemporary colleague who is trying to enjoy the world before his eyes more clearly and with higher resolution.
--- pp.6~12 From "Prologue"

High resolution life.
Living in the same world as others, but experiencing it more vividly and savoring it more richly.
--- p.21 From "Sensor"

I sometimes think about this.
'Only those who have been fascinated can fascinate.'
People who have had many beautiful, tear-jerking experiences can use that very power to captivate others.
To charm others, you must know what attracts them.

--- p.31 From "Sense"

There are so many good things around now.
I can't enjoy everything anyway, and even if I did, there wouldn't be much left for me.
Rather, there are as many bad things as good things.
Time is limited, and good things are in surplus. What do we need? Choice.
So what's important is perspective.
(…) People with a clear perspective know what they like and what always makes them grow, so they can quickly pick out the best things from among countless good things and absorb them better.

--- pp.54~55 From “Viewpoint”

There is a world that begins to appear when you get to know it.
When I encounter a moment where the world reveals itself little by little, I feel a thrill like the pomegranate seeds rolling in my mouth bursting.
With just one layer of knowledge, the world seems to reveal more charm.
So I'm trying to come up with a reasonable hypothesis.
If you have multiple layers, you can live in a much richer world.

--- p.100 From "Layer"

These are the words of a sage.
Two two hours.
Each head is a Tao.
Barter advance.
Every single thing is the truth.
'The truth is not in a great place.
It's a story that says, 'Everything that exists is contained in its own way,' and the more I look at it, the more I think it's the truth of life.
(…) A surprisingly surprising world is captured through eyes that look lovingly at the useless.
Don't prejudge uselessness, but continue to explore the world with loving eyes.

--- pp.130~131 From "Double"

The second necessary, minor action is to bring back that moment.
When you think about all the photos we have on our smartphones, photos we never open, you'll understand why I say this.
If possible, it is better to create a separate folder.
For example, create a folder called 'Inspiration' and check it out whenever you have time.
We use the notepads in our smartphones and the folders in our photo albums as bookmarks for passages from our favorite books.
When you go in, memories of that time that you thought you had completely forgotten come back to you with surprising vividness.

--- p.146 From "Savoring"

When I read 『The Old Man and the Sea』 as a child, what I remember most was the drama of the battle between an old fisherman who had been through a lot and encountered the biggest fish of his life.
As I grow older and write more professionally, I revisit the novels I read as a child, and I can't help but be amazed by the detailed descriptions of fishermen who catch fish using only the feel of their lines and hands, the methods of using fishing gear, and the descriptions of the fish's movements.
These days, I look at works from the perspective of 'How was this written (made)?'
I looked it up and found out that Hemingway was a famous fishing enthusiast, and that when he went out on a boat, he caught more fish than most Cuban fishermen.
Yes, that's right.
There are certain words that only those who know them well can use.

--- p.170 From "Savoring"

The more I work and the more projects I undertake, the more I realize that the world's countless possibilities are just waiting for a little spark.
There are more opportunities than you might think that don't necessarily require a specific person to do it.
And that opportunity goes first to those who speak out to the world.
It is up to the person who seizes the opportunity to seize it and turn it into something that he or she must continue to do.

--- pp.193~194 From "Creation"

We all have things we 'need' to do.
Just think about that 'must'.
Interestingly, the value you hold most important may be hidden in that 'must'.
Isn't that right? That "must" makes you look difficult, and it's a perfect tool for your haters to use to attack you, but it's also where you start to differentiate yourself from others.
So there is a high probability that the seeds of creation are hidden there.

--- pp.211~212 From "Creation"

I don't think dealing with creative work is much different.
Creating something doesn't require genius inspiration, crazy immersion, or all-nighters. It starts with small promises to yourself and sticking to a routine.
In the previous chapter, I mentioned that the core of creation is a beginning and an end. What facilitates that beginning is a "routine."

--- p.234 From "Every Day"

This is an era where main characters and sub-characters coexist.
Whatever your main character is now, don't be awkward with your 'creative self'.
Don't think, 'What am I...', but put even a very small beginning into the schedule of your life.
As with many things in life, change starts there.
Borrow the power of consistency.
You will experience slow but clear changes.
--- p.239 From "Every Day"

Publisher's Review
“At what resolution do you see the world?”
Six Tools to Brighten Your Day

Byungwook Yoo, a copywriter and creative director who must find newness in the familiar.
Even he, who had developed his senses and sensitivity while working in advertising for over 20 years, envied someone who was a 'high-resolution' person.
The author describes a person with high resolution as someone who can perceive the same scenery more richly than others, who can store those feelings in their own way and then retrieve them at the right time, who can accurately pinpoint the appeal of the same food, and who can select the beautiful from countless pieces of information.
The author, who was, so to speak, 'jealous' of those who could see the world more clearly and enjoy it, has been constantly striving to acquire that ability.
"The Resolution of Life" is a treasure trove of know-how he acquired through trial and error.

The author proposes six steps and six tools for a high-resolution life: 'Sensor-Perspective-Overlay-Savor-Create-Daily.'
Each chapter contains tips on how to use each tool and hone its skills, and the author's experiences and anecdotes make it a vivid and engaging read.
In 'Sensor' and 'Perspective', we will tell you how to discover good things and establish your own perspective, and in 'Layer' and 'Savor', we will tell you how to delve deeper into what you like, expand your scope, and enjoy it better.
And when it comes to 'creation' and 'everyday', it teaches us that we can enjoy life at a higher level when we go beyond enjoying what is given and create something uniquely our own.

“When you know, there is a world that begins to appear.
When I encounter a moment where the world reveals itself little by little, I feel a thrill like the pomegranate seeds rolling in my mouth bursting.
“With just one layer of knowledge, the world seems to reveal more charm.”

These six tools are already given to all of us, but it is up to each of us to use them.
If your tools, your senses, are worn out from long-term disuse, or if they need some lubrication, read this book.
Today, you will look at the world with curious eyes, wondering what you will discover and feel.

A life that must be lived
How to live more vividly and richly

In today's world, overflowing with stimulation and information, what do we take in and what do we discard? Can what we take in today elevate our resolution? According to the author's experience, the key to increasing resolution in life isn't in the grand scheme of things.
These are easy things to try: frequently being fascinated by something, going to a good person's side, searching for a universal word in a music app, closing a sense you've been using often, opening a photo album you've been piling up, and quickly writing down notes even if it's full of typos.

But even with just a little effort, you can experience a completely different day.
Sometimes, you discover the joy of enjoying seasonal fruits, you open doors to a world you never knew existed, your travel experiences become much richer, and your ears for listening to music and your eyes for watching movies change.
As these experiences accumulate, not only will your daily life become more fulfilling and you will often feel happy, but you will also gain insight and vitality into tasks that were once suffocating and difficult to resolve.

“When we look at the world with respect, we are much more likely to discover the beauty and virtue it may contain.”

In particular, the author encourages us to go beyond discovering and savoring to ‘creating.’
If you enjoy the pleasure that what is given brings, you will reach a point where you cannot just wait quietly.
The author has enjoyed the joy of ‘creation’ while writing a book.
Although he has consistently written books in his spare time from his busy daily life and entertained readers with his stories, the joy has not only been shared by the readers but also by the author himself.
During the process of writing and building the book, my perspective on the world became clearer, and I experienced the joy of opportunities that I had never imagined before.
In this book, the author says that the resolution of those who create and those who do not is different.
If you try to create something, your world will gradually expand and you will experience a more three-dimensional world.
If there are those who wave their hands and say that 'creation' is far from them, let's follow the author's delicate and meticulous guide.
It will help you take a step towards a life that is completely different from before.
