Into the book
I really liked a lot of things.
One day, my long-time best friend M said this to me.
“Most people have their own likes and dislikes, right? But you seem to have your own likes and dislikes.” I was already quite drunk, so I couldn’t understand what he was saying, so I just laughed.
M said again.
“You seem to genuinely like most things.
This is good because of this, and that is good because of that.
“Some things I just like, and others I like despite that… … .”
--- pp.7~8

Girls who never let go of each other's hands even when they clash fiercely and break each other.
Girls who become braver and stronger and create tremendous synergy.
How could one not love the story of such terrifying girls?
But how come I have lived for over 10 years pretending not to know about such a wonderful movie… … .
--- p.24

If you think about it, children's bravado is really bold and serious.
So sometimes it's hard to catch mistakes in expressions, and I often feel bad about laughing at them out loud.
Certainly, children do not seem to be greatly afraid of the mistakes or failures that they inevitably encounter in the process of learning new words.
No, it seems like you have the tremendous courage to boldly try things out and correct them if you're wrong, even if you're afraid.
That may be why children learn new words so easily and quickly, and eventually make them their own.
--- p.31

As a child, I lived in a cozy, large apartment complex filled with a small playground and flower beds.
I don't know how simple and fulfilling my daily routine was back then.
After eating breakfast, I would immediately take my bike out and ride around the neighborhood. After coming home and having lunch, I would quickly run to the playground, where I would get covered in sand and sweat and have fun all day.
And when the sun set, I would lie down on the nearby soft grass and watch the nameless insects before going home to eat dinner.
It was the most enjoyable and fulfilling day of my life.
--- p.35

The karaoke room was truly a magical room.
When I go to karaoke, the good feelings get better and the bad feelings get better.
So, every time the closing time approached, I would threaten the boss and beg him to give me more service time, using both pleas and threats.
Without a shred of shame.
What is shame?
If I could extend that magic even a little, I would gladly continue the medley of requested songs from the boss for an extended period of time.
--- p.66

Bread is the greatest mystery of my life.
Why does something that brings the greatest pleasure to the mouth cause the worst thing to happen inside the body?
Why did God give me a body that cannot enjoy bread, but why did he give me a body that can taste all kinds of bread so well?
Bread of fascination and confusion.
What kind of metaphor are you trying to be in my life?
My savior who came to ruin my life.
My desired bread.
--- p.82

Children know and enjoy the benefits of summer better than anyone else.
When summer came, children ran freely wherever they went, wearing light clothing, whether they sweated or not.
I also knew how to use the heat as an excuse to indulge in cool, sweet snacks.
On a hot and humid day, he had the spirit to run to the water's edge and play until he was completely soaked, and on a humid and rainy day, he didn't miss out on the fun of spending quiet time lost in thought.
The children knew how to fully embrace summer and enjoy it as it was.
The masters of summer were the children.
--- p.89

Even now, I often think of the man at Adam Stationery Store.
As I meet more children, I find myself thinking of you more and more.
The warm eyes and smile of the uncle who always took great care of the small and fragile hearts of the children and encouraged them with affection so that they would not be hurt are still vivid in my mind.
Even now that I am a grown man, the memories of that time still give me deep courage and strength.
--- p.124

I began to think that perhaps what I really wanted wasn't simply specific objects, but the space where those objects were placed, where people could gather and experience various things firsthand.
I wanted to fully experience the vibrant vitality and overflowing energy unique to that place again.
I missed that lively atmosphere, the warm lighting, the temperature, the humidity… things like that so much.
--- p.156

It was a heartbreaking yet beautiful work.
It seemed as if he had gathered, examined, and reassembled various fragments of life to create a new language in order to express the great sorrow and pain that could not be expressed in conventional ways.
I felt a desire to understand, remember, and share with those who have passed away.
It was a work of sincere mourning, touching the place of loss with the most intimate touch.
--- p.171

During the seven years I spent with my nephew, I had the invaluable experience of witnessing a human being grow and develop.
My child's challenges became my challenges, and my child's achievements became my achievements.
None of the small changes the child experienced were surprising, new, or special.
--- p.177

I decided to just walk now.
I keep getting confused and going back and forth.
While constantly doubting and wavering.
If you keep walking like that, you will eventually arrive somewhere.
If you do that, you will eventually become someone.
In fact, it's okay if you don't necessarily get somewhere or become someone.
If you are happy while walking, that alone would be a wonderful life.

Publisher's Review
"Us" and "Our Home" director Yoon Ga-eun shares her memories of happiness.
Back then, we were passionate about small, warm, and slightly strange things.

Film director Yoon Ga-eun, who expressed the world of children with a delicate gaze in the films “Us” and “Our Home.”
〈Our House〉 became a hot topic when the filming notice titled “A word of advice to adults working with child actors” was made known.
Many people responded positively to the filming rules that require child actors to be treated with equal respect as professional actors.
The title of director Yoon Ga-eun's first collection of essays, "Hohoho," comes from something the author, who describes herself as "a person who is always ready to like anything," heard from a friend.

“Most people have their own likes and dislikes, right? But it seems like you have your own likes and dislikes.”

The author, who has many passions, looks back on the past and tells stories about the things he was passionate about.
When you hear stories about things he truly loved, such as movies, dramas, toys, stationery, flowers, and summer, you can feel his love for them.
The tribute to “something that truly comforted and made me laugh” also contains scenes from Yoon Ga-eun’s childhood, reminiscent of a scene from a movie.

『Hohoho』 consists of 3 parts and 17 chapters.
In Part 1, “Saying You Like What You Like,” Part 2, “That’s How the Adventure Began,” and Part 3, “Just to Walk,” you can encounter Yoon Ga-eun’s colorful memories, including memories of her childhood and stories from her younger days when she struggled to become a film director.

Yoon Ga-eun seems to be the type of person who puts 'happiness' in the best place in her drawer.
Take it out often, touch it, polish it, and show it to your friends.
In this drawer there are not only memories and positivity, but also worries and anxieties.
He even takes them out and lets them sit in the sun, and takes good care of them.
As if we couldn't know what happiness was without them.
I think I now know how the brilliant light, ample moisture, quietness and pleasant noise of his films came about.
Yoon Ga-eun is a passionate fan of small, warm, and slightly strange things.
He himself may be that kind of person.
If you like someone, you will start to resemble them.
Thanks to this book, we will become more like each other.
Kim So-young (author of "The World of Children")

“The experience of loving something is always precious and special.”
A special list that "comforted and made Yoon Ga-eun smile"

The author confesses that throughout his writing, he kept exclaiming, "I might be the only one who likes this, but it's not just me! Everyone has a little bit of this taste, right? Let's all enjoy whatever we like together!"
His writing exudes a tenacious sincerity and passion for what he loves, making the reader happy as well.

In the episode "Running, Rolling, and Screaming Girls," I recall the movie "Bring It On," which I loved a long time ago but had forgotten about.
“There haven’t been many works, before or since, that have portrayed ordinary girls running, rolling, and screaming so beautifully,” she said, regretting that she “pretended not to know about this film for over 10 years.”
In "I Have No Hobby or Talent for Collecting," he vividly expresses his anecdotes about searching through old stationery stores to collect classic stationery and toys, and his affection for the cheerful cartoons of artists Gil Chang-deok, Yoon Seung-un, Shin Mun-su, Park Su-dong, and Shin Young-sik, which were very popular in the 1960s to 1980s.

The episodes related to filming the movie are also interesting.
In "Summer Sickness," the author answers the frequently asked question, "Why are movies always set in summer?" and shares stories from his filmmaking career.
Although it wasn't my intention, I happened to shoot movies often in the summer, and I experienced firsthand the joys and hardships of summer filming.
He also tells the story of how the filming was wasted due to the unpredictable summer weather, and how the director of photography and the director struggled to capture the bright summer mood on camera during the continuous daytime sun-dip while filming “Us.”

Although he loves bread enough to be called a "bread lover" by everyone, the episode where he struggles because it doesn't suit his constitution is hilarious ("Good Bread, Bad Bread, Weird Bread").
In "That Taste Part 1" and "That Taste Part 2," you can check out a list of movies and dramas that the author particularly liked, including the worst dramas.
We can also see his human side in the stories where he likes karaoke, finds solace in his horoscope, and shows his doting side towards his nephew, and in the episode where he wanders around wondering about his future and then walks the Camino de Santiago.

For me, there has been no entertainment more exciting and thrilling than that.
Just watching people meet and part ways made my palms sweat and my heart pound.
It was a really interesting drama.
In the midst of difficult daily life events such as marriage, divorce, child rearing, and support, various incidents and accidents that exceeded all expectations and predictions unfolded endlessly.
No human being is simple, and no relationship is simple.
There was always something more.
After love comes sacrifice, after sacrifice comes betrayal, after betrayal comes revenge, and after revenge comes war.
And after the war… … all that remained was a cry into the air: “See you in four weeks.”
Ah, what on earth is life?

“The memories of that time still give me deep courage and strength.”
About our childhood, which we all experience anew.

As we follow the memories of things that director Yoon Ga-eun liked, we naturally encounter his childhood.
In "The Adam Stationery Store Man," which contains an episode reminiscent of a scene from a Yoon Ga-eun movie, we meet him as a child who stole something from a stationery store and feels guilty for disappointing the owner.
“Flowers are always right” contains touching memories related to flowers.
The dream-like description of a time when, as a child, I was in the grass with a heavy heart, and some older sisters I didn't know came to me and made me a ring out of a rabbit's crow, which comforted me.
The episode "I Will Celebrate" shows the quirky and cheerful side of young Yoon Ga-eun.
It's the story of a woman who was worried that her friends and family would forget her birthday and that she would have the most depressing birthday of her life, but then her dad came home from work that evening and brought her a wrapped trash can, thinking it was a gift for her and she was delighted.
After that, he vowed that he would celebrate his own birthday the most.

Not only the author's childhood but also the stories of the children he met are impressive.
In "I Want to Go to the Market," the author interviews a child about their feelings during the pandemic, and upon hearing that they want to go to the market, which they haven't been to in a while, realizes how much everyday happiness the children have lost due to the pandemic and feels sad.
In "Speak Bravely Even If You Don't Know," the author mentions children's slips of the tongue and says he wants to learn from the courage of children who try new words even if they don't know how to use them.

『Hohoho』 contains the diverse aspects of film director Yoon Ga-eun.
These are gems of life stories that readers who love his films and those who appreciate the purity of his work will enjoy sharing.

Even now, I still don't quite understand why.
Just looking at those things makes me feel good.
It also feels like going back to that time and experiencing childhood anew.
I feel like I'm reliving that time when everything seemed to flow more slowly and feel a little more affectionate.
Of course, it may be an emotion that can only be felt by someone who has passed through those times and has finally reached a safe place to reminisce.
Actually, surviving those times safely was by no means an easy task.
