Book Introduction
"Why does Mom have to upset me by having a younger sibling so late?" This anthology of everyday poetry captures the joys and sorrows of an elementary school-aged older sister with a younger sibling! After her younger sibling's birth, the narrator, who begins calling him "older sister," vividly captures the experiences and emotions she experiences as she spends time with him.
My sister's calm and unadorned speech is rather pleasant and feels more affectionate as you turn the pages.
This book allows you to reflect on your own family relationships while experiencing the perspective of a child watching someone younger than you.

Publisher's Review
“Why does my mom upset me by having my younger sibling late in life?”
My older sister who has a younger brother
A collection of everyday poems filled with the joys and sorrows of life

Author Song Myeong-won, who observes and sings about children's daily lives with a warm gaze, has published a collection of poems titled "If Sang-woo Wasn't There," which deals with the relationship between siblings, based on inspiration from the author's own children.

In "If Sangwoo Wasn't There," the older sister, who has Sangwoo as her younger brother, appears as the narrator.
The temperature difference between Sangwoo, a kindergarten student who is still too young to bother his older sister by following her around, and his older sister, an elementary school student who is slowly entering puberty, provides a subtle sense of fun.

Because Sangwoo is my younger brother
I became an older sister

Sister!

If Sangwoo wasn't there
A name that will disappear

―〈Sister〉 Full text

The thought, “If Sangwoo (my younger brother) hadn’t been there…”, which is also the title of the poetry collection, was probably the thought that the speaker had when he was most upset and angry.
However, as you read through the 42 pieces starting with the opening poem, “Sister,” you feel the sister’s inner self growing little by little, just like her younger sibling, and ultimately, there is a moving feeling that all the previous pieces conclude with “the days that were possible because (her younger sibling) was there.”

Looking at each work separately, the emotions felt each day are different, such as being annoyed by the younger sibling or feeling jealous of the younger sibling, but ultimately, we can say that love is the basis of the gaze that constantly watches over the younger sibling's growth by being by his side.
Through the eyes of the child narrator, who looks at a child younger than himself, readers will reflect on their own family relationships and rediscover the affection they had momentarily forgotten.

The illustrations for "If Sangwoo Wasn't There" were colorful and filled with a sensual style by illustrator Kim Purun, who is active in various fields.
The composition, which is like a picture diary, adds to the fun of viewing, and it captures the ordinary yet cute scenes of the two siblings.
The simple yet cute collaboration of poetry and illustrations will resonate with all readers, regardless of whether they have siblings or not, and provide an enjoyable reading experience.
