Book Introduction
A masterpiece depicting the desires and moral contradictions of human society
Frankenstein, the prototype of horror science fiction

The conflict between humans who defied God's will and artificial humans who wanted to become human.
Warn of the disasters that will result from the failure of science and technology!

Mary Shelley, wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the three great poets of the 19th-century British Romantic era, and a genius female writer, wrote her masterpiece, Frankenstein, which is considered a classic of science fiction and horror novels along with Gulliver's Travels, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Utopia.
When we think of 'Frankenstein', we often think of a huge body, a scarred face, a screw stuck in the temple, and a creepy look in the eyes, but in fact, Frankenstein is the scientist who created the monster in the story.
After years of research, the scientist develops a technique to breathe life into humans, and creates monsters using human corpses as a test.
But Frankenstein is so shocked by the monster he created that he screams and runs away, and the monster disappears somewhere.
The monster is disillusioned with his own hideous appearance and seeks revenge on his creator, Frankenstein.

When Mary Shelley first published this work anonymously in 1818, she was only twenty-one years old.
Frankenstein became even more famous when it was made into a film by Universal Pictures in the United States in 1931.
The image of Frankenstein that people all over the world think of today is because the impression of Boris Karloff, who played the monster in this film, was so strong.
Because the film focuses on the horror genre, it deviates significantly from the original work's themes of scientific and technological advancement, philanthropy, and the tragedy of going against God's will, and thus differs somewhat from the original work.
Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein gives us food for thought and lingering emotions. In particular, the lines that the monster says to Frankenstein when he and the monster meet in the latter part of the work make us reflect once again on the ethical and social issues that science and technology have brought about.
