Winner of the 8th Internet Novel Award!

A time-transcending romance between life and death, past and present, between Ichinose Tsukimi, a girl who wants to die, and Aiba Jun, a man who sells his life to the god of death in exchange for a silver watch that can turn back time.
In February 2019, a work became a hot topic on [Let's Become a Novelist], a Japanese online novel submission site.
This work, which rose to number one in the romance category of a daily magazine with reviews such as “This is the first book that made me afraid to turn the page,” “I want to read it over and over again,” and “I gained hope in life after reading this novel,” is none other than “One Day, You Came into My Death” (original title: “The Story of a Girl Who Wants to Die and Plays Around While Interfering with Her Suicide”).

This work, which is considered a rare masterpiece among masterpieces even in [Let's Become a Novelist], a place famous for discovering excellent new writers and producing many popular works, went viral and won the 8th Internet Novel Award in 2020, and thanks to the enthusiastic support of readers, it was published as a book.
The story of Jun Aiba, who gave up on his own life and chose to live with only three years left, and Tsukimi Ichinose, who continues to attempt suicide, begins with "death," which we usually think of as the end, and gradually moves on to "life." This unique story structure will not only provide readers with fresh entertainment, but will also leave a heavy aftertaste that makes them think again about the meaning of love and life.

Into the book
“I could have died soon.”
Ichinose spoke as if she was upset, her arm still held.
No, it's definitely crooked.
She glared at me with her large, clear eyes, but far from being scary, her eyes looking up at me were rather cute.
“Don’t you ever think about giving up on suicide?”
Ichinose looks tired of my words.
--- p.16

It was at that moment that a strange woman spoke to me.
“Mr. Jun Aiba.
“Will you give me your life?”
She was a shabby woman wearing black clothes all over her body.
He was tall and surprisingly thin.
Her long silver hair was beautiful, as if it didn't belong to this world, but she had an eerie smile that covered up all the emotion.
--- p.26

As I was looking down for a while, four girls who looked like middle school students walked towards me from the opposite direction.
At first, I thought the classmates of the girl who committed suicide had come to pay their respects.
But the four girls, with very happy faces, started taking pictures of the suicide scene with their smartphones in their hands.
I was quietly listening to their conversation, celebrating the girl's suicide, saying things like, "She's finally gone," and "I'll never have to see her face again."
I listened to what they were saying, my hands gripping the railing with increasing strength.
--- p.45

In this situation, Ichinose, who was physically and mentally exhausted, blurted out, “I want to die.”
But no one sympathized.
The stepfather shouted, “If you’re going to say something like that, you should just die right now!” and the sisters hurled curses at her, saying, “The tragic heroine has been kidnapped!”
My mother pretended not to notice.
After telling everyone about his relationship with his family, I asked Ichinose, who was bowing her head.
"Did you try to commit suicide to show your family that you have the courage to kill yourself? If so, it would be a shame to kill yourself because of people like that."
--- p.77

Looking at the huge school of sardines, I suddenly thought.
If there are that many people gathered together, wouldn't there be some who get left out?
If there were no jealousy or bullying, Ichinose and I might have been happier being born as sardines rather than living as humans.
--- p.117

“Yes, because if I could turn back time, I could make that failure never happen.
A person who was once timid and passive no longer fears failure, and with that momentum, he or she can do well in anything.
As I gain confidence, people around me start treating me differently than before.
Then you realize.
“I regret it and say, ‘I could have survived if only things had been a little different.’”
--- p.146

“No, that’s not it… I’m curious about why you want me to live.”
I was speechless.
It's not because there's no answer.
After spending the past month with her, I realized that my intentions and my true feelings had been reversed.
So I pretended not to know and tried to cover it up by saying, “I don’t know either.”
Because I want to continue this relationship for just one more second.
“……You’ve been interfering with the suicide until now without knowing?”
“There might be a reason.”
Ichinose didn't say anything more as he answered as if it were someone else's business.
--- p.213

How irresponsible is the comforting thought, "If you live, something good will happen to you someday."
This is the word I have hated the most since long ago.
But now I am comforting her with words that are not much different.
But maybe someday someone will come along who will understand her.
As we met, if we were alive, we would definitely be alive.
--- p.240

But it seems I was mistaken.
Looking around, I see many people looking at the side profiles of their children or lovers rather than the fireworks.
I realized for the first time that looking up at the sky isn't the only way to enjoy fireworks.
As I looked at the sparkle in Ichinose's eyes, I realized that fact.
--- p.246

The sight of butterflies fluttering around her looked quite mystical.
Come to think of it, the Grim Reaper compared us to 'wingless butterflies'.
But the current Ichinose is no longer a wingless butterfly.
It will definitely change in the future.
As you meet more people and your horizons broaden, the girl in front of you will surely change.
With the heart you hold in me.
Now she can fly anywhere on her own without me.

Publisher's Review
“Why do you keep interfering with my suicide?”
A suicide sabotage operation that started with a light heart,
Discover the one and only love in a lonely world!

“Mr. Jun Aiba, would you please give me your life?”
On December 25th, a few months before graduating from high school, a woman approaches Aiba, who is killing time standing on a deserted bridge.
The woman who calls herself the Goddess of Death makes an unbelievable offer.
The idea is to exchange a silver watch that can turn back time and lifespan after three years.
Aiba, who had no regrets about life anyway, makes a deal with the god of death, and thus begins her three-year limited life.

After a year of turning back time and earning as much money as he wanted and living as he wanted, he happens to see a girl's suicide news on TV.
As thoughts about the girl linger in his mind, Aiba is drawn inexplicably to the suicide scene and witnesses a shocking scene there...
Eventually, he decides to turn back time and prevent the girl from committing suicide.

Tsukimi Ichinose, a girl who constantly attempts suicide no matter how many times she is tried to turn back time.
Can Aiba prevent this girl's suicide? And with his own life dwindling, will he be able to do so?

"One Day, You Came to My Death" is a masterpiece that deals with somewhat heavy and sensitive topics such as bullying, school violence, family conflict, and death in a cheerful and loving way, but by no means lighthearted.
Even though it is a debut work, it has a solid story that is on par with the works of established authors, and it is full of narrative fun that will keep you engrossed from the moment you open the book to the end.

Also, as the story unfolds, hidden foreshadowings are faithfully recovered throughout the latter part, such as why the messenger of death chose Jun Aiba as the person to whom he would hand over the silver watch, and how the detailed settings related to the owner of the silver watch will affect the relationship between Aiba and Ichinose later on, making it an impressively tightly-woven novel.

In a unique and interesting world with things like the Grim Reaper and the silver watch that turns back time, Ichinose's psychology of initially being wary of a man named Jun Aiba who suddenly appears in front of her but gradually opens her heart and falls in love with him, and Aiba's psychology of lightheartedly interfering with Ichinose's suicide for self-satisfaction but gradually coming to sincerely wish for her to live and looking at Ichinose with loving eyes is portrayed very realistically and convincingly.

The novel reminds us of the power of love and hope, something we all know but easily forget.
“I’ve always hated my life.
I was always in pain and I was resentful, wondering why I had to go through this.
I thought I would spend the rest of my life cursing myself.
But if it weren't for this life, I wouldn't have met Aiba.
As Ichinose says, “My life got better from the moment I started thinking that way” (p. 376), the novel says that although we all experience “pain so bad that we want to die,” there is something that gives us the strength to live on one more time.
Perhaps this is the story the author truly wants to tell us through the love between the two main characters.

“I will turn back time and come to you as many times as I want.”
An exquisite blend of reality and fantasy, with witty dialogue.

Scenes that are vividly drawn before your eyes come together
Completing a brilliant youth drama!

Ichinose, who suffered from school violence and started refusing to go to school, also feels terribly lonely as she comes into conflict with her stepfather and step-sister from her mother's remarriage.
Her lonely life, unable to find meaning in life, is similar to that of Aiba, who was abandoned by her parents at birth, grew up in an orphanage, and was adopted, but had difficulty adjusting to her new family and lived a lonely life.

Is that why?
As Aiba grows closer to Ichinose and learns more about her inner thoughts, he becomes more desperate to prevent her suicide. Readers of the novel also watch anxiously, wondering what will happen if Aiba misses the timing to turn back time and fails to prevent Ichinose's suicide. At the same time, they cheer on the girl's strong desire to "want to die" as it changes into "I'm afraid to die" and "I want to live."

Ichinose, who is tall and slender but actually has a playful and strong personality, and Aiba, who is a bit blunt and pretends to be strong on the outside but is actually soft and affectionate on the inside.
The story of two people meeting, bickering, laughing, despairing together, and then getting back up again is sweetly depicted against the backdrop of typical dating spots for young people, such as movie theaters, game centers, aquariums, parks, swimming pools, and festivals, presenting readers with a youth film filled with laughter, tears, excitement, and emotion.
