Naomi and Kanako
Description
Book Introduction
The ultimate suspense that only Hideo Okuda can write
You can't help but root for these women!
It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last line!

A new novel by Hideo Okuda, a master storyteller with humor and pathos.
This novel, in which Okuda Hideo attempts a new transformation with a sophisticated suspense style, depicts the process in which two strong female characters, 'Oda Naomi' and 'Shirai Kanako', meticulously plan and resolutely carry out a 'clearance plan' against their husbands' violence.
These two women, who dominate the novel's atmosphere from beginning to end and lead the story with an unpredictable ending until the very last moment, demonstrate the essence of the characters that Hideo Okuda creates.

This novel, through Naomi and Kanako, presents a suspenseful glimpse into what Okuda's "hard-boiled women" is all about, satisfying the basic expectations of readers who love Okuda's world.
The fast-paced plot, solid writing and composition, highly calculated appeal, and the twist that makes you realize that even seemingly flimsy tricks were actually meticulously laid out foreshadowing, allow you to enjoy suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last line.
Hideo Okuda has been working on satirical works that evoke deep pathos through humor and wit, and social works that take a serious approach without humor. This novel is the ultimate result of integrating these two tendencies.

Into the book
I bought cookies as a gift at the pastry shop in front of the station and went to Kanako's mansion.
Kanako, wearing a floral one-piece dress in keeping with the spring, even put on makeup and greeted us with a smile.
Although the swelling had gone down, bruises remained here and there, and the heartache remained.
Naomi felt a renewed sense of melancholy at the man's violence.
Naomi was thinking of recommending a divorce.
I knew from watching my parents that domestic violence cannot be resolved by the parties involved alone.
The violence that men wield against women is nothing but madness, and leaving it to the parties involved is nothing less than neglect.
--- p.44~45

Akemi spat out with a grim expression, “Kill him.”
“A man like that is not worth living.
“I wouldn’t mind killing you.” “That’s a bit… .” As expected, Naomi was at a loss for words.
“If you kill them, you’ll go to jail.
“I’m the only one who suffers.” “Then I should think of a way to avoid getting caught.
If I were you, I would travel to Shanghai with you and ask the gang to kill you there.
Since it's the work of a Chinese gang, the Japanese police can't do anything about it.
The Chinese police do not easily investigate cases where a single Japanese tourist dies.
“That’s the end of it,” Akemi said nonchalantly.
Naomi thought that this lady could do that.
Clearly, for the Chinese, life is like war.
Therefore, any lie or scheme to protect one's own life becomes self-defense.
“I want to be that strong too,” Naomi said with a sigh.
“You are strong enough.
“She’s the strongest Japanese woman I’ve ever met.”
--- p.116~117

Naomi's throat was parched as she put her impromptu idea into words, wondering if this could really come true.
No kidding, it would be better for Tatsuro to die.
No, he is a human being who deserves to die.
“What does Kanako wish for?” asked Naomi. Kanako thought for a moment and then said, “I want to live an ordinary life.”
“I just need to sleep through the night and drink only delicious water.” “What do you mean, delicious water?” “Use it.
Water.
“At first, my mouth felt cracked and stung, but once I got used to it, it felt bitter this time.” “Yeah… … .
“It must be a mental problem.” The water is delicious.
Naomi muttered to herself.
For Kanako now, even the ordinary daily life is precious.
Having lost it, she finds herself in a maze with no exit in sight.
And the will to escape from there was taken away.
Due to her husband's violence.
--- p.124~125

“I think I may have misunderstood Kanako a little.
(…) I didn’t know you were this strong.” “You’re not strong.
I couldn't resist even once while getting hit by my husband.
(…) “I mean, I created a shelter in my heart.
(…) okay.
When I face my husband's violence, I decide to think that I am living a fake life and that my real life is somewhere else.
When I did that, strangely enough, it was bearable.
Well, it is an escape.
(…) “I got rid of Mr. Tatsuro tonight, but I’m confident it won’t be traumatic.
“You just have to exchange the shelter and reality in your mind.”
--- p.243

I met Tatsuro at a meeting arranged by a coworker.
The first impression was quite good.
His background of graduating from a top private university and working at a bank in the city also supported his claim.
The week after we first met, I asked her out on a date and we started dating naturally.
Tatsuro was very active in love, and never missed sending sincere texts or small gifts.
This man wants to marry her.
That thought was so strong that Kanako also felt inclined.
I was at an age where I was very conscious of marriage, and I thought that this might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
It was an ordinary woman's ordinary wish for marriage.
But that turned out to be the biggest trap of my life.
--- p.356

Kanako blushed and said brightly, “Thank you.”
Of course it was acting, but he was able to act as well as any other actor.
There was a thick, wick-like thing inside Kanako that prevented her from being shaken.
It was a truly mystical feeling.
It might be a bit of an exaggeration to say that I'm not afraid of anything, but I'm not afraid of anything I used to be afraid of.
At least it wasn't agitated.

Publisher's Review
Naomi, who has a trauma from childhood violence,
Kanako, who is still suppressed and oppressed by violence today,

The perfect counterattack by two women who can no longer tolerate violence.

Naomi, a female sales employee at a department store, has suffered from childhood trauma due to her father's habitual violence against her mother.
Kanako, a housewife, is currently exposed to the violence wielded by her husband.
Naomi accidentally discovers that her friend Kanako is living in helpless fear, unable to even attempt to escape her husband's brutal violence.
Naomi, who cannot forgive the man who tramples on her friend, devises a 'clearance plan' (a plan to make her husband disappear) on behalf of Kanako.
Moreover, Naomi thinks that this plan, in which all the circumstances are exquisitely intertwined and progressing in her favor, is almost like fate.
Even Kanako, who had maintained a passive attitude, agrees that the only way to escape the hell of violence is for her husband to disappear from the world, and begins to move toward perfect execution.
However, as the flaws in the plan, which they believed to be a perfect crime that meticulously calculated every possible scenario, from murdering her husband and burying him in secret to treating it as a simple disappearance, are revealed one by one, Naomi and Kanako find themselves in a desperate situation.

"Naomi and Kanako" largely contains 'Naomi's story' and 'Kanako's story'.
The process of proposing, preparing, and executing a clearance plan is depicted in 'Naomi's Story', while the process of dealing with the inevitable aftermath of the sudden disappearance they had planned to complete the plan and the tenacious confrontation with the suspicious gazes of those around them is depicted in 'Kanako's Story'.
The story of the two women naturally brings to mind the movie [Thelma & Louise], but as the story unfolds, the direction of the story changes and the ending becomes difficult to predict, keeping the tension high until the last line.
It's not just the readers.
Even Hideo Okuda revealed his thoughts, saying, “I hesitated until the very end about how to end it.”
This novel takes the reader on a roller coaster ride, rushing toward a climax until the very last moment, only to deliver a moment of exhilarating catharsis and a sense of relief.

We will never get caught!
I have no regrets, no remorse, no hesitation in getting rid of my husband…

The main points of interest in "Naomi and Kanako" are the friendship and loyalty between the women, and the energy that the female characters exude.
Among them, the curiosity of whether Naomi and Kanako will eventually be caught or not doubles the thrill and makes the reader's heart race the most.
They murdered Kanako's husband and gave him the motive of "fleeing overseas on charges of embezzlement," but her husband's younger sister, Yoko Hattori, continues to pursue her brother, bringing up points that she finds questionable about his disappearance, things they had never considered.
As a single, career-oriented woman with a strong sense of purpose, Yoko's relentless pursuit of suspicions gradually widens the gaps in her supposedly flawless clearance plan, putting increasing pressure on them.
But what's really strange is that Naomi and Kanako are criminals who committed murder, and yet they don't show an ounce of remorse, guilt, or hesitation, and yet somehow the reader becomes an accomplice and sincerely hopes they don't get caught.

How is this possible? This novel, centering on the not-so-light topics of "domestic violence" and "husband murder," vividly exposes the contradictions and absurdities of modern society by demonstrating how flawed the social mechanisms that keep the world running safely are.
The physical scars and pain that domestic violence leaves behind will fade with time, but the scars and pain that it leaves on the mind will not disappear with time and force people to make extreme choices.
Society fails to protect individuals who fall victim to domestic violence, and individuals choose to find ways to survive by exploiting loopholes in social institutions to secure their own safety.
However, it is revealed that Naomi and Kanako's counterattack method was actually flawed, and having failed to fully counterattack, they dream of a new challenge and once again cleverly exploit the flaws in the social system.
This huge joke is probably the kind of humor that only Hideo Okuda can use.
