What awaited them in Gyeongju was an old house that was two hundred years old.
Contrary to the wishes of the client, Kwon Jeong-yeon, who wants to fix up the house and use it again, the two people's opinions lean towards 'reconstruction', which is to "knock down the pillars and beams and rebuild the main structure with steel bars."

While I was thinking about what it meant, Professor Moon continued with something I didn't understand.

In this place, I learned 'Chagyeong'.
The word 'chagyeong', which means 'borrowing a view', was one of the most frequently used words in architecture departments, next to 'assignment'.
I couldn't quite grasp its meaning, but from this window seat, where the clouds change direction and drift by, the trees change color with each season, and snow quietly piles up in winter, I learned that the scenery is not something to be owned, but something to be borrowed for a while, and that the enjoyment of it is important in architecture.

Author Seong Hae-na, who has emerged as the newest and freshest light in Korean literature with the publication of short story collections such as “When You Walk Away from the Light,” and novels such as “The Summer We Left Behind,” has published “When We Are Born Ten Times and Die” as part of Wisdom House’s short story series, Wipick.
The novel takes us to an old house in Sannae-myeon, Gyeongju, through the eyes of Jaeseo and Yvonne, fourth-year architecture students, and offers a leisurely view of the scenery where we can take a short break.

Jaeseo and Yvonne, who are on vacation, attend Professor Moon's summer school.
Professor Moon is someone who insists on the pencil drawing method that was popular in the 80s and 90s, even in an era when 3D programs like CAD and SketchUp were common.
Jaeseo, who had only drawn contour lines throughout the semester, unexpectedly received an A+ in this class.
Unlike Jaeseo, who has a lot of self-doubt and lacks confidence to the point of submitting a grade appeal even after receiving the highest grade, Yvonne is an excellent student who can do anything with flying colors.
Jae-seo, who takes each step with doubt, and Yvonne, who seems extraordinary even with a single word, are two very different people who leave for Gyeongju to do Professor Moon's homework.

From the collapsed roof after two earthquakes to the inefficient passageways and the cracks in the joints connecting the columns and beams… … .
Contrary to the wishes of the client, Jeongyeon Kwon, who wants to fix up the house and use it again, the two people's opinions lean towards 'reconstruction', which is to "demolish the pillars and beams and rebuild the main structure with steel bars" (p. 66).
Professor Moon recommended taking measurements and drawing with a pencil, but Jaeseo and Yvonne, pressed for time, submitted the results of transferring the existing drawings of the old house to CAD.
After receiving Professor Moon's cold criticism, I finally get to take a good look around the old house and the city of Gyeongju.

The novel, with its meticulous and flawless sentences, like building a house, thoroughly explores not only Jae-seo and Yvonne, who are just "guests who stop by," but also the mother and daughter Kwon Jeong-yeon, who live there as if it were their fate, the grandfather who guides Cheomseongdae, and the villagers.
Rather than the house itself, it talks about the 'building heart' that lends the most beautiful scenery to a loved one and "prays inwardly that they will live well" (p. 85).

A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'


Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.

Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, Lim Sol-ah, and Hwang Jeong-eun.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.
