Description
Book Introduction
Prism of No. 35, "Substance"
“You are one.” The mysterious voice in “Substance” emphasizes the fact that “you are one.”
But we all have something about ourselves that we find so disgusting that we can't even accept it as 'ourselves'.
"Substance" is a work that pushes to the extreme the desire for a "better self" and the disgust for the "ugly self" that women inevitably face in the male-dominated media capitalist market.
Prism of No. 35 illuminates the exploitative realities of Hollywood that gave birth to Substance, the lineage of female body horror films, and various references.
Next, we explore every corner of the work, from the self and the other, to the colors and sounds, special makeup and symbols, and even the feminist implications of “Substance.”
We also broaden our perspective to include works that can be viewed alongside “Substance,” focusing on the body and mind, aging, and mother-daughter relationships.
