From Kim Yeon-su to Hyeon Ho-jeong, today's novels captured in modern literature!
I've lived a life like a matchstick on my eyelashes.
Kim Kyung-wook, "How the Master Became a Writer"
Ghost stories are scary and miracles are beautiful.
But ghost stories can be beautiful and miracles can be scary.
Then, wouldn't the two stories switch places?
―Kim Na-hyun, "Gardens in the Sky"
If you are currently tossed around by the storms of life, listen to a story you cannot understand, a story you cannot believe.
Because light seeps in there.
Don't believe that what you see with your eyes is everything, try to see what is invisible.
When you doubt your own righteousness, new paths open up.
Kim Yeon-su, "Snowy Samilpo"
Come to think of it, I wonder if there are two types of people in the world.
People running in ecstasy on the empty road, and people standing on the shoulder in anxiety because they can't see anyone.
I mean, where am I?
―Park Hyung-seo, "It's the Wind"
It was a strange thing.
I felt like my life was clearly existing.
As if, even in the midst of this difficult daily suffering, blood can flow, clot, and burst out somewhere.
―Yesoyeon, "Deep Breath of the Heart"
“But, there’s a saying that you have to shoot the gun on stage.
(……) That always sounded strange to me.
Shouldn't there be a reason to shoot first? It's as if, for no reason at all, you have to shoot anyone just because of the gun."
―Im Hyeon, "Heavy Snow Advisory"
I am a person who cannot strangle Seon-ah's neck, but I am a person who can strangle the neck of the person who killed Seon-ah.
―Jeong Yong-jun, "Close to Pain"
Under the night sky, the road lines stretched out into the distance, intertwined with each other.
It was like a vein exposed in the ground, or like a crack split in the ground.
The houses that were built and then torn down on the ground seemed like signals from beyond time.
―Choi Eun-mi, "All of This"
In all the books, salvation came after an enemy air raid.
The arrival of the enemies also meant the end of a long, painful wait, a wait that had become a world in itself.
Therefore, Seonhwa carefully observed the people who came every day.
They climbed the mountain and waited for someone who would end their arduous wait.
―Ham Yun-i, "When Our Enemies Climb the Mountain"
'Now life is a transparent heart that beats.'
―Hyeon Ho-jeong, "Swing on the Swamp"
∥70th Anniversary Special Feature - Poetry∥
* We include poems by twenty poets including Kwak Hyo-hwan, Kim Ki-taek, Kim Bok-hee, Kim Haeng-sook, Kim Hyeon, Moon Bo-young, Min-gu, Park Eun-ji, Shin Yong-mok, Ahn Mi-ok, Ahn Hee-yeon, Yang Anda, Lee Gi-seong, Lee So-ho, Lee Jang-wook, Lee Je-ni, Jeong Hyeon-woo, Choi Jae-won, Han Yeo-jin, and Hwang Yu-won.
From Kim Ki-taek to Moon Bo-young, today's poetry captured in modern literature!
Between the eyes looking down and the eyes looking up
Between being sucked in and bouncing out
There is gravity and speed
One point bursting at the vertical end and blackout
Kim Ki-taek, "The Cliff"
Hope, if alone, she could fly naked, but Hope, like Emily Dickinson, even in the midst of a rough storm, someone must hear Hope's cries, Hope,
I check in my luggage separately and return to the crowd.
Kim Bok-hee, "New Position"
How did bats grow wings by stretching the skin between their fingers? How did humans end up with split hands and wearing things like rings? I kept thinking, what if a swarm of bats flew up behind me, their long fingers spread wide? What if a ring, sparkling like a snowflake, fell from the sky?
Kim Haeng-sook, "The Telephone on the Beach"
Hold on somehow
Hold on anywhere
Saying goodbye to the collapsed house
Pray for abandoned shoes
This is our job to tie up the hammock
Park Eun-ji, "Hammock Diary"
When a loved one tries to cross the threshold
I pulled back the curtains and pointed to the orchard beyond the window.
This is me, can you still love me?
_An Hee-yeon, "Fruit Tree"
Last winter, I brushed the snow off my face and watched the horizon glow. The sun created a scene of sunrise like a wildfire spreading. Is that really so? If you call love love, is that where hate pours down? It was a blizzard. It turned out I was alone in the shade, where the sun never shines.
_Yang An-da, "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik"
You speak with or without drinking water.
This mountain path is really nice.
No matter how far I go, there is no end.
If I keep walking like this, I'll reach the end of the world.
Maybe by reaching the end of the world, I can get out of the world.
I drink water instead of answering.
_Ijeni, "Walking with Water"
But, Grandma… …
If you ask how should we live life,
I have to hold on tight, tight, tight, from then on
I learned how to hang on without even knowing what it was.
_Han Yeo-jin, "The wind flows from high places to low places, and people"
The reason there is no parallax between the Moon and the Earth is because they rotate at the same speed.
So from Earth, we only see one side of the moon.
But if we can observe scars on the lunar surface, what does that mean for the distant ones?
Moon Bo-young, "I Was Just Saying"
∥Modern Literature Pin Series_Novels∥
* We present Moon Ji-hyuk's "Night Train," embroidered with the nostalgia of a radiant youth, recalling the will to freedom that was the sole purpose of his journey 25 years ago, in search of "just one image, one place, one word," and confirming that the journey is over only by eliminating that abstract entity.

Publisher's Review
“A nation that has the capacity to perpetuate its culture will never decline.”
From Kim Yeon-su to Hyun Ho-jeong, from Kim Ki-taek to Moon Bo-young!
Monthly 『Modern Literature』 70th Anniversary Special Issue Published
* Contemporary Literature, which has published 741 issues without a single missed issue since its first issue in January 1955, has published a special commemorative issue to mark its 70th anniversary.
As a pure literature magazine with a 70-year history, we have never had an easy time.
From the time we began to breathe in the barren maternity wards of the postwar era, to the time we began to enjoy the richness of life, to the present day, when culture began to blossom, no era has been without its challenges.
Yet, has there ever been a time when we forgot, even for a moment, our founding aspirations for literature: "Literature is the center of culture"? Has there ever been a time when, in the pursuit of the paradoxical combination of "tradition and modernity," we forgot the value of history, simply seeking the new? We have never forgotten either of those things.
We have endured the hardships of the past 70 years, the misfortunes of our time, with the sole sense of mission to create a culture that will enable our nation to survive as a nation, and with the belief that this is the only value we must uphold.
Everything changes.
But we must move forward with the conviction that a nation with the capacity to perpetuate its culture will never decline.
Now, as we enter the year 2025, we present this 70th anniversary issue, a beautiful culmination of a time that has produced 625 writers and guided countless works into the future of literature.
This commemorative issue, planned solely with one novella, ten short stories, and twenty poems from the "Pin Series," will be remembered as a gem-like anthology of participating writers who illuminate the diverse world of graphic literature of our time through the "spiritual adventure of being a writer."
As we open this festival, we would like to express our special gratitude to all the writers and longtime readers who have made 『Modern Literature』 possible for their boundless support.
We also pay tribute to the late artist Yoo Young-guk and his foundation for sending us their precious covers, which allowed us to publish a commemorative issue with two covers. We also ask that you share this joy with many readers by reporting widely.
From Kim Yeon-su to Hyun Ho-jeong, from Kim Ki-taek to Moon Bo-young!
