Publisher's Review
Dongrae Hot Springs, where I followed the adults during my elementary school days.
Although it was broad daylight, the streets were dominated by dazzling billboards and neon signs from cabarets.
In front of the theater, vendors on carts were moving between the narrow roads, and clothing stores and restaurants were packed with customers.
This is another Nampo-dong, Seomyeon! A row of eel shops lined one side of the alley, with live eels being skinned on the street, and the smell of them being grilled over charcoal permeated the entire hot spring area.
Professor Kang Sang-jung, a scholar living in Japan, once said that the street scenes of Korea during the industrialization era looked like the blood vessels inside the body were all exposed, and that's what the hot springs of the 1980s looked like to me.
Oh my! It was a holiday, but... there were still so many customers.
There weren't enough lockers in the changing room, so I put my clothes in a bamboo basket and left it with the staff.
The public bath at the first hot spring I visited felt like I was plunged into the fires of hell.
The bathroom was so crowded that it was difficult to even pass through.
It was so steamy that I couldn't even see in front of me, as if I had entered a wet sauna.
The water in the bath was hot enough to peel off skin and cause burns.
The men in the bathhouse...
He kept saying "It's cool!" and "Oh my!" but I couldn't understand him.
There was no place to sit properly.
I had to go to a corner with a bucket and squat down to push the dirt away.
It was a truly mind-blowing and exciting experience.
But the next day, all the friends I met at school asked me.
“Your skin suddenly became brighter?”
Since then, I have been enjoying visiting Dongrae Hot Springs.
Especially when my chronic atopic dermatitis flares up, I visit Dongrae Hot Springs instead of going to a dermatologist.
Because along with healing the body and mind, smooth skin is a bonus (of course, this is my personal opinion).
This episode of "Homefront Bathhouse" introduces Dongrae Hot Springs through the eyes of five guest editors.
Not only the content, but even the font and design were all created with the guest editors' perspectives in mind, so if you keep this in mind, you can enjoy it even more.
Okay, then this time, take off your clothes and come in! Hurry up!
