Publisher's Review
■ Issue Introduction

This is the ninety-seventh magazine, “B.”

If I were to pick the word I've heard most often since last year and now that the new year has just begun, dopamine is the first word that comes to mind.
The reason one type of hormone is so talked about is probably because both the supply and demand of the content market are tilted toward pursuing fun and excitement.
The current content market is soon being called the 'attention economy' or 'addiction economy.'
It is common to see consumption patterns that involve quickly consuming a lot of things in order to experience them and stamp their seal of approval rather than slowly exploring their essence.
Given this situation, many industries based on creativity are becoming entertainment.
We live in an age where everything—fashion, makeup, news, knowledge—must be turned into toys.
Play is a skill, a context, and a value.

Disney is a model brand when it comes to the topic of 'entertainment'.
Disney is often described as a kingdom of stories, a media giant, and a super IP company, but if you were to sum up their century-long history in one word, it would be entertainment.
Founder Walt Disney once defined entertainment this way:
“We have always tried to follow the fundamental concept that there is great entertainment in the discovery of knowledge.
If you think about it the other way around, great entertainment always offers wisdom, humanity, and enlightenment.” If Walt Disney is right, then the entertainment Disney wants to deliver is far from the dopamine mentioned above.
Longtime Disney fans often associate Disney entertainment with values like positivity, courage, optimism, joy, and a sense of life.

Among them, ‘happiness’ is a very important keyword to Disney.
Disney describes its business as “creating happiness by providing premium entertainment for people of all ages.”
Happiness is a difficult word to interpret and there are doubts about its existence, but Disney has a remarkable ability to make the concept tangible.
Among the many nuances of happiness, the happiness produced by Disney is closer to a state of feeling safe rather than a state of fullness.
In Disney Parks, where Disney animation, movies, musicals, and everything else are integrated, people are cut off from any elements that evoke negative emotions.
Being uplifted by positive emotions and feeling that the world is worth living in, reorganizing life with good memories and recollections.
This is kind of a mantra that works at Disney.

This happiness starts with classic animations like Mickey Mouse, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Lion King, and expands to content acquired by Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, acting as the engine of the vast Disney universe.
Soundtracks, books, related merchandise, theme parks, and more all serve as tools to recreate and reproduce happiness.
The virtuous cycle they designed also operates in an interesting way throughout an individual's life cycle.
This is the case for people who first encountered Disney content as children, became somewhat cynical during adolescence, and then revisited their memories as college students, or for adults who had not been particularly interested in Disney until they had children or grandchildren.
In this tightly woven worldview, like a net, we will eventually intersect with the Disney brand, and at that intersection, each person's image of the Disney brand will be different.
I believe that this universal yet highly personal brand experience is the secret to Disney's success over its 100-year history.
