Book Introduction
After publishing her first picture book, "The Building Where Trees Grow" (2019, Changbi), picture book author Kangmi Yoon was selected as "Illustrator of the Year" at the 2020 Bologna Children's Book Fair and has garnered international attention by publishing international editions in France, Taiwan, Italy, Turkey, and other countries.
His second original picture book, Moonlight Piece, has been published.
You can encounter the author's world that has become deeper while continuing the theme of 'coexistence of nature and humans'.
It delicately captures the emotions felt by a child who goes into the forest with his family on a moonless night in the mysterious nature.
It depicts the process of characters who used to look at their tablet PCs, game consoles, and cell phones, walking along a forest path at night, looking back at nature, and restoring family love with a warm gaze.
This work evokes a beautiful world we have forgotten through the special and precious journey of an ordinary family.

Publisher's Review
“You might see something really cool.”
Treasure Hunt in the Forest on New Year's Eve
An ordinary family's special and precious journey

"Moonlight Piece" tells the story of a family who goes into the forest on a moonless night.
To the children who want to relax and play games, the mother says she will show them a beautiful view.
The children are curious about their mother's treasure hunt and follow her.
At first, the children looked annoyed as they walked away from their mother and aunt, who were walking ahead of them. But as the forest grew dark, they soon put down the electronic devices they were holding and held the hands of their family members.
Starlight filling the space where the moonlight disappeared, frogs singing by the lakeside, a flock of ducks splashing in the cool water, a group of evening primroses blooming and coloring the night air thickly… … .
The forest is full of sparkling things, but what the mother is looking for is not easily revealed.
What exactly does a mother want to show her children?

The mind of a child growing in a fantastic nature

Readers walk through the dark forest with their children and encounter various precious aspects of nature.
A wondrous night scene unfolds, with night birds flying along the star-lit sky, moths flapping their wings repeatedly to create a breeze while smelling the sweet fragrance of flowers, and evening primroses blooming in the moonlight.
The nature captured in 『Moonlight Piece』 makes us imagine countless lives and stories unfolding in places beyond our sight.
The family finally encounters a swarm of fireflies, which "look like pieces of the moon that disappeared on New Year's Eve coming down to light up the forest."
Perhaps the journey to discovering fireflies was the gift a mother wanted to give her children.
Deep in the forest, the nature of the last night of the year, encountered by the family, cheers on the children's next steps with silence rather than the splendor of midday.

Things that are noticeably disappearing
A story drawn with a desire to protect

"Moonlight Piece" leaves a lasting impression by depicting the relationships between people, and between people and nature, with sincerity and lyricism.
Two city kids who followed their mother and aunt into the forest only look at familiar electronic devices and are indifferent to the stories their mother and aunt tell.
But the sight of family conversations coming alive and leaning on each other during a night walk brings a warm yellow glow to our hearts.

For artist Kangmi Yoon, who spent her childhood in the countryside and now lives and works in the city, nature is an object of nostalgia and longing that reminds her of her family.
The author, who discovered a firefly wandering around the city, wrote “Moonlight Piece” based on Yun Dong-ju’s poem “Firefly.”
It contains the hope that the fireflies will return safely to their nests and that more fireflies will stay with us.
The stories of the characters in the book who find hope by breaking through the darkness will become affectionate letters to the families around us.
