Ellie creates little 'wooden people' called Wemmicks, each with a special love for them. Although they all look different, they were all made by the same carpenter, Eli, and the Wemmicks all lived together in one village. There was something that those Wemmicks did every day. They carried a box with gold stars and gray dots in it, and they would put stars and dots on each other. The star was a thing of pride, but the dot was something shameful and embarrassing. Punchinello was one of the more spotted Wemmicks. The paint is peeling, the tricks aren't great, and it's not cool. Seeing the increased number of dots, the other Wemmicks added more dots. Lucia appeared before Punchinello like an angel. And then everything changed. Wemmicks resemble us humans in both facial expressions and appearance. They are as diverse as our people. I wonder if even the way Wemmicks evaluate each other resembles us. The crowd sets the standard, evaluates by it, enjoys it, and even gossips about it. Some people are happy about it, while others are frustrated. We know something is wrong, but it feels so far away and difficult to bring it up and change it. The message to us is this. "It's not what others think, but what I think that matters," and "You are special simply because you are you." Just as the author says, wanting to spread God's love, you can find love in this book as well. Are we, our special ones, and our children, perhaps in despair like Punchnello?
