GARM Magazine 22 Insulation
Description
Book Introduction
A gatekeeper that maintains a pleasant indoor environment
Insulation controls the comfortable indoor environment, including temperature, humidity, and ventilation.
A well-insulated, superior indoor environment not only prevents condensation, but also eliminates any condensation that has already formed through ventilation and temperature control.
When a leak occurs in a building, thermal bridges occur and cracks form due to condensation.
Insufficient insulation like this can eventually lead to condensation, which can cause indoor environmental problems such as mold.
In this installment of "Insulation," we will examine the importance and principles of insulation, types of insulation materials, and suitable insulation methods for each building section, focusing on the field.

Publisher's Review
“Technology that controls the durability and environment of buildings”
The old saying, “It doesn’t leak rain or get wind,” indicates that waterproofing and insulation, which protect people from the external environment, are the most basic elements of architecture.
But at the same time, it is also a complaint that the basics are not well maintained.
Why is it so difficult to maintain this obvious function?
Because it's hard to find anywhere to learn about waterproofing and insulation.
Since this is handled at the level of merely copying detailed drawings that someone else has drawn or that have been passed down from the past, the reality is that the construction quality at the site that is encountered afterwards has no choice but to rely entirely on the conscience of the construction worker's skill.
With materials and methods unsystematized, we can no longer rely solely on information floating around on the Internet.
Now is the time to reclaim the fields and technologies that have been lost to education and practice.
The joy of learning one by one,
GARM, a one-topic magazine for building materials
'Gam' is a pure Korean word meaning material.
The GARM series guides you through the minimal steps to create your own space.
Its beginning is an exploration of ‘materials,’ the smallest unit of architecture.
This book aims to help readers identify and utilize quality materials, and further discuss ways to realize their personal creativity.
One theme per season
We dissect various materials one by one.
〈Gam Magazine〉 is a one-topic magazine that introduces one building material per volume.
Each season, we choose a theme and publish multiple volumes simultaneously.
In July 2017, a total of 17 volumes were published, starting with the sections on “Wood,” “Brick,” and “Concrete,” which deal with the basic materials of architecture.
From the “Paint,” “Tile,” and “Flooring” sections that can be followed by both designers and ordinary people interested in interior design, to the “Steel,” “Glass,” and “Stone” sections that create urban landscapes, to the “Windows,” “Lighting,” and “Built-in Furniture” sections that combine various technologies, to the “Aluminum,” “Fabric,” and “Plastic” sections that are lightweight but play an important role in buildings, to the “Architectural Hardware” and “Interior Hardware” sections that are the strong muscles that support buildings, to the “Wood,” and “Paper” sections that have made a new leap forward as materials that realize eco-friendliness, and to the “Landscaping” section that creates landscapes through nature inside and outside of spaces.
Each volume provides easy-to-understand guidance on the types, sales locations, selection criteria, and other considerations when selecting materials.
Insulation and waterproofing, the basic hardships
Insulation and waterproofing are closely related to each other and are the most basic elements of construction that control the durability and environment of a building.
However, fragmented information, closed markets, and unsystematized materials and methods make it difficult to fully understand its principles and technologies.
From the user's perspective, isn't it true that this is a function that is more important than anything else, but has always been treated as something that someone has to solve between design and construction?
Rather than compiling all the information like an academic book or textbook, this ninth season of Gam Magazine aims to present the basic information on insulation and waterproofing and highlight important issues.
I hope that this will serve as a guide to at least reexamine the outdated, on-site information that has been passed down through word of mouth.
