Dictionary of the Mind
Description
Book Introduction
A thoughtful and beautiful book that explores the enigmatic heart.

The human body is one, but the gestures and colors of the mind are not one.
There are tens of thousands of gestures, and the colors of the heart are innumerable.
Because we are alive, our bodies and minds are ever-changing, and it is especially difficult to read our minds.
Because the body can be seen and touched, but the mind is difficult to do so.
Because of this, people worry, struggle, and have a hard time because they do not know their own hearts or the hearts of others.

For those who are always curious about their own hearts and the hearts of others, the book "Dictionary of the Heart," which provides clues to tens of thousands of threads of the heart, has been loved by readers and has been reprinted repeatedly since its publication in 2008.
It has firmly established itself as a thoughtful and beautiful book that explores the enigmatic 'heart'.
This is because poet Kim So-yeon, who has been “underlining and annotating every single word related to the heart” for over a decade, has demonstrated her efforts in “Dictionary of the Heart” by looking closely at and unfolding the words of the heart, revealing the colors of the heart that are difficult to fathom.
Even though he said, “Compared to the knots of the heart, the words that describe the heart are too few,” he looked closely at the words and things surrounding the joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, love, hate, and desire that form the basis of the heart with the poet’s deep gaze.

In the newly renovated special limited edition of 『Dictionary of the Heart』, poet Kim So-yeon speaks again through ‘The Poet’s Words’.
About a certain sentence of the heart that became the basis of “thrill, trembling, and crying.”
I still dream of a special encounter with a sensitive reader who wants to touch the delicate knots of my heart.

This book, which was originally a 'dictionary' about the 'mind', covers about 300 words in 26 chapters that can be opened and read at any time, and one bonus chapter called 'Gap'.
Reborn with the solid and unique binding of designer Lee Jae-min, 『Dictionary of the Heart』 will be a place where new readers can witness the heart of “beauty and truth.”

Into the book
He is a ghost who is very good at seizing the one opportunity out of ten.
Nine times, he appears indifferent, but when he really needs it, he comes and offers a word of comfort.
It's a worry that usually starts with 'See?'
Just because of one word, "See," I was touched to realize that he, whom I thought was indifferent, had been secretly worried about my problems for quite some time.
He believes that no words are effective, so he holds his words back until, like Superman, he appears at the most crucial moment.
--- p.263

While others are thinking about what clothes to wear today, what music to listen to, and which restaurant serves delicious food, he is busy thinking about how the universe is expanding, what form the end of the Earth will take, how many languages there are in the world, and in what year the next ice age will begin.
His magnanimity sometimes goes beyond the limit, and he is delighted that he can now perform a trick where he throws the ball over to the next table and the ball disappears.
This universe is too small for him, let alone the billiard table.
--- p.264

He is only interested in his own work.
Not to leave hope on Earth, but because I don't know how the world works, I will plant apple trees just like I did when the Earth was destroyed.

Publisher's Review
A Dictionary of the "Heart" with Tens of Thousand Colors
─300 words of joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, love, five desires, and desires help you find the thread of your heart.

The human body is one, but the gestures and colors of the mind are not one.
There are tens of thousands of gestures, and the colors of the heart are innumerable.
Because we are alive, the body and mind of a person who is always moving are as changeable as flowing water and wind.
It changes every moment, so it is impossible to capture every moment.
Among the body and mind, the mind is especially difficult to read.
Because the body can be seen and touched, but the mind is difficult to do so.
Because of this, people worry, struggle, and have a hard time because they do not know their own hearts or the hearts of others.
No wonder they say, “You can know the depth of ten feet of water, but you cannot know the heart of a one-foot person.”
So then, is the mind something that is completely unknowable?
no.
Just as there is visible light that can be seen with the eyes and infrared and ultraviolet rays that can be felt with the body, there are colors in the mind that can be seen, heard, and felt with the mind's body.
Of course, putting the different colors of the mind into words is a problem of a different dimension.
This is because we must describe what we see, hear, and feel with our mental body, not our physical body.
It is a daunting task for anyone to accomplish in a day, two days, a year or two.

At first, I collected over seven hundred words of my heart and wrote them down in a notebook.
If I were to write down all the words with subtle differences, it would easily exceed a thousand.
This project began with amazement at how many words could describe the heart, but now I've arrived at the realization that, compared to the knots of the heart, the words that describe it are woefully inadequate. (From the "Preface")

Poet Kim So-yeon, who has been “underlining and annotating every single word related to the heart” for over a decade, uses her efforts to thoroughly examine and unfold the words of the heart in “Dictionary of the Heart” and reveals the incalculable colors of the heart.
This book, which was originally a 'dictionary' about the 'mind', contains 1) twenty-six chapters that can be opened and read at any time, 2) a bonus chapter called 'Gap', and 3) over 300 words.
Although the author said, “Compared to the knots of the mind, the words that refer to the mind are too few,” he makes us carefully look at the joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, love, hate, and desire that form the basis of the mind, and the words and things surrounding them.
This book is for those who are always curious about their own hearts and minds, and provides them with clues to tens of thousands of possible answers.

Delicately capturing the nuances of the mind
A special dictionary filled with the poet's sensibility and intuition.

Anyone who has tried to discern the colors of their heart has probably at least once looked into the difference between 'lonely' and 'desolate'.
In the Standard Korean Dictionary, 'lonely' is defined as "being alone or feeling lonely because you have nowhere to rely on," and 'lonely' is defined as "lonely and lonely."
If we follow this interpretation, it is impossible to tell at a glance what the difference is between 'lonely' and 'forlorn'.
Lonely → lonely → desolate → lonely → lonely… … .
Because it cannot escape circular definition.
1) 『Dictionary of the Mind』 boldly shakes off the limitations of general dictionaries, namely circular definitions, linguistic definitions, and even universal definitions.

The word 'lonely' is not an adjective.
It is an action verb that moves actively.
When people can't stand the empty state of their hearts, they look for the word 'lonely'.
And ignite it.
Those words contain an energy that is already moving, unable to do anything about loneliness.
That energy transforms the state of loneliness into an action verb. (Page 91, “Lonely”)

Compared to the word 'lonely', 'loneliness' is more focused on the scenery outside the mind than inside the mind.
To be precise, it is a reaction to the relationship between the mind and the external world.
If loneliness looks around, then solitude looks around.
When we look around the scenery surrounding our hearts, and are affected by that low temperature, our hearts' temperature drops, and that is "loneliness." (Page 92, "Loneliness")

It is a completely different method from the Standard Korean Dictionary.
The author measures the color of the mind through emotion and intuition, not through linguistic, scientific, or psychoanalytical methods.
It is a unique approach that discards the universalist perspective and does not go through the dry, woven web of ideas and theories.
In one way, this resembles the poet's method of constructing a complete world and a meticulous logic while deviating from the general order and logic of the world.
2) And this book deals in detail with the subtle differences in related words such as 'happiness-joy' and 'innocence-purity' in many parts.
Just looking at the three pieces in Chapter 23, “The Seven Colors of Indifference,” “Warm Indifference,” “Heartwarming Indifference,” and “Selfish Indifference,” makes us realize how different the nuances of each “indifference” are and how important it is to capture the nuances.
This is a vivid example of how the colors of the mind can appear similar and thus be easily confused, and how a delicate approach is needed to not miss the subtle differences.
