Let's all be strangers in the afternoon
Description
Book Introduction
"Our afternoons become essays."
Author Oh Young-eun of “Swimming Diary” and “Chatting with a Cat”
Moments that require the tender indifference depicted
Author Oh Young-eun, who received praise for her previous work as “an author with a sense of leisure between words and pictures,” presents her third essay on the topic of “afternoon.”
From the leisurely afternoons spent with cats, to the days when my heart gently sways while immersed in the tastes of an author I admire, to the big and small episodes I experienced as an illustrator, and the swimming pool story that I can't leave out for him... This book is filled with colorful and lovely stories, like a basket of cute candy.
The author slowly reflects on the beauty of an ordinary day, breathing leisurely breath and warmth into each sentence in an afternoon that is even more pleasant because nothing happens.
The quiet laughter and small conversations of people in everyday life, even the round shadows cast under the sunlight, tell us that the warmth that makes us smile can become an essay.

Into the book
Just like the croaker, which is difficult to prepare but has a luxurious taste, the subject of 'consumption' is difficult to handle, but it seems to be the perfect fit to accurately portray a person's lifestyle and attitude.
How can I write without feeling overwhelmed, like a seasoned chef who brings out the natural flavor of ingredients? It's a night of being immersed in the endless shackles of honest writing, a pursuit that seems impossible to grasp.
--- p.37 From “The Dilemma of Honest Writing”
The bright red fabric with the sparkling beads is already shocking enough, but the fact that it only has one sleeve makes it even more striking.
That dress was the first beautiful thing I ever experienced.
Even now, when I think of 'beauty', that dress comes to mind.
When I work on a painting, I sometimes feel like I want to draw something as beautiful as that dress and capture people's attention, but more often than not, it's just a wish.
If we try a little harder, maybe we can reach that beauty itself someday.
--- p.82 From "Bright Red"
Fortunately, it seems that good looks are not necessarily welcomed in all fields.
It also seems like there is a specific appearance that suits each profession.
I think I can happily accept the awkward gait that comes with walking while sitting all day, the shape of my shoulders that are relatively higher than my right because I draw with my left hand, the marks on my nose from wearing glasses for long periods of time, and the horizontal wrinkles on my neck that come from the habit of bending my head down to look at my paintings.
All of this is a badge of honor that demonstrates the 'expertise' of someone who has been drawing for over twenty years.
haha.
--- p.120 From “Very Private Thoughts on Appearance”
When I was little, I would sometimes go to my sisters' rooms and ask them, "Sister, please pat my back a little."
When I lay face down on the floor, my sister would gently pat my back, pat, pat, and then put her fingers through my hair and comb it.
Then, as the child's inexplicable anxiety about the night subsided, his eyelids slowly closed.
How sweet and welcome it was to fall asleep so gently.
Do you have your own favorite sound, Cool Cool?
--- pp.159-161 From “Favorite Sounds”
Thanks to the swimmers who volunteered and worked hard, I think my concerns about water quality have completely disappeared. So, next time I meet a friend, I can confidently tell him to start swimming with confidence.
Additionally, as we immerse ourselves in cold water and move forward, the small worries of everyday life that cling to our bodies will disappear along with the current, and a life of swimming will become quite enjoyable and carefree, swoosh swoosh.

Publisher's Review
The freedom to just stop and do whatever I want,
About the slowest and quietest afternoon moment we are allowed.
When I look at Oh Young-eun's writing and drawings, the word 'leisure' comes to mind.
And there is a comfort and a comfort that can be felt even without words.
Could it be said that there is a power that leads the body and mind that have been busy all day to now rest a bit?
Perhaps that is why the author mainly draws and writes about everyday scenes.
His works, which are breathtaking just by looking at them, depict moments of pure freedom, such as lying down on a cozy carpet in the warm midday sun, enjoying a leisurely afternoon, cutting through the gentle waves with friends in colorful swimsuits, and enjoying a warm cup of coffee and a cat.
Through the way he lives with an abundance of leisure but without being distracted and centered, he advises us, "There is no need for discouragement in life, so don't rush and find balance in life."
An author's afternoon is not just a moment in the day, but a small world where the mind can take a moment of rest.
Even in the repetitive daily life, I find my own pace and calmly observe the direction in which life flows.
His expressions, brimming with serenity, carry a gentle assurance that it's okay not to achieve anything, that it's okay to pause for a moment, and even in the midst of a busy city, they calm the mind like a calm lake, reaffirming the warmth of okayness that we have forgotten.
“After a day of eating and drinking in pursuit of pleasure, I rationalize to myself, ‘I guess I can’t do everything according to plan every day, right?’
'I thought, 'I'll be able to focus more on work tomorrow since I've given up on my plans and rested today as if it were a day off.'
I think that if you live a balanced life without pushing yourself too hard or being too careless, you will be able to live well.

Ordinary moments come together to become our collective essay.
We look forward to your colorful and lovely essays.
This book is a comforting record of small, warm moments that are often forgotten in the midst of busy daily life.
Simple yet solid tastes, secret childhood memories, lovely pieces of the city, and episodes of swimming life filled with water convey the cheerful yet affectionate charm of everyday life.
The author left a message saying, "Did you know that our afternoons become essays?" and hoped that just as his afternoon became an essay, everyone's afternoons would also be left as shining and affectionate stories.
"Let's All Be Strangers in the Afternoon" delicately captures the small moments of everyday life.
Through this book, I hope you will appreciate the preciousness of an ordinary day and the moments that make up our lives, and that your afternoon will become a story that gently seeps into someone's heart.
“I feel like I can talk about trivial things with a close friend without hesitation, so I wrote down the stories I’ve kept in my heart. I feel like my relationship with that friend and with my past self has become stronger.
If I may, I hope my simple story will touch the small scenes in your memories, and that while you read my story, it will provide a small respite and solace from your busy daily life.”
