Anyway, summer
Description
Book Introduction
A revised edition of the unofficial summer book of the Republic of Korea, 『Anyway, Summer』.
Author Kim Shin-hoe, who has received much love and sympathy from readers with works such as "It's Glad I Live Like Bonobono," "My Leakage Diary," and "My Dear Alcohol," has revised his existing writings and added five new summer episodes that he has been building up since the first edition was published.
As with the first edition, the cover of the revised edition was also created in collaboration with artist Kim Cham-sae.
The image of the girl filling the front cover is exactly like the confident appearance of this season.
The book is full of things we talk about when we talk about summer: vacations, travel, swimming, daytime drinking, muscle shirts, exes, and more.
The author, who started writing this book because he didn't want to just say "because" to the question of why he likes summer, follows the path of his "loving heart" and the sensations of this season that he had forgotten for a long time come back vividly.

Into the book
I always find myself at a loss for an answer to the question, “Why do I love summer so much?”
But, since summer is not something that can be passed over so simply, I thought I'd give it a try.
It's like a love letter to summer, writing about why I love summer.
I like this about you.
So good.
It's not great sometimes, but it's good in the end.
As someone who spends the entire year waiting for summer, I wanted to talk about my summer memories and tastes and connect with like-minded people.
--- p.15
Looking back, I always met someone in the summer.
As the weather started to get warmer, I started to feel strangely impatient.
We need to do something exciting, something different than what we've done before.
Passion, youth, recklessness, romance, hot body, sexy.
I believed that these were the words that described summer.
But now that I'm writing this, my face is turning pale.
Because in the end, all that remains is a dark history.
--- pp.19-20
When you find something you like, the world becomes bigger than that one thing.
I console myself by thinking that it would be fortunate if I could just live less staggeringly, and then suddenly something catches my attention, and from then on, my daily life becomes dense.
A flat day becomes soft and three-dimensional.
--- p.32
In summer, everyone becomes one with beer.
Most of my friends and I either go to the gym to drink beer or cancel plans to go to the gym to drink beer.
As the hot summer draws to a close, the frequency of visiting convenience stores decreases as if by magic.
Beer cans are slowly piling up in the recycling bin.
Every time I come across a trash can that won't fill up quickly or see a convenience store I frequently pass by, I think, 'Ah, summer is over!' But summer comes again.
When that time comes, I know that I will be diligently selecting and carrying beers as if I were stamping my attendance card, and going in and out of the trash separation area.
--- p.39
Every time I put on summer clothes, I think about my body.
When you hesitate about whether to buy clothes you like or find clothes you bought but never wore, the question that comes to mind first is "Can I wear this?" rather than "I want to wear it."
The clothes are pretty, but I wonder if I would look good wearing them.
My arms are flabby, my thighs are thick, and my stomach is sticking out.
When I censor myself too strictly, I come to the conclusion that those clothes are not for me.
If someone like me wore clothes like this, everyone would look at me strangely, and it would actually be uncomfortable to wear… .
In the end, you end up putting aside the clothes you want to wear and only choosing clothes you can wear.
--- p.44
It was nice to be able to spend my favorite season with someone who resembles my favorite season.
It felt like the summer moments that I had enjoyed alone were given a different color because of one person.
But I knew.
As summer ends, so will this love.
I'm going to want to be alone again.
--- p.72
I realized once again that traveling with people I love is worth it, no matter where you go.
But I ended up crying again on the limousine bus ride home after the trip.
Grief is like a loan.
Even if you try to pretend not to know or that it's okay, it's still there.
If you keep ignoring it or running away, the interest will just snowball.
All I can do is just grieve and steadily repay it.
--- p.81
This summer, I'm going to find a local bar where I can grab a book and have a drink alone anytime.
Later, I will diligently read books that I won't even remember, and I will have some time to myself, thinking that it doesn't matter whether I do it or not.
Because summer is the season for that.
If you have a book by your side, that time will be even more enjoyable.
--- p.93
What I missed back then wasn't summer, but me in summer.
I wanted to meet myself again, the me who liked myself every summer, the me who somehow looked cool, the me who pushed all my worries and anxieties far away, and who was as sparkling and vibrant as the season.
But a person whose heart is already in winter lives in winter even in a summer country.
Like Elsa in Frozen, who turns everything she touches into ice, a cold heart can make even the hottest seasons cold.
I learned this through that experience.
It is not the season but the heart that completes summer.
At that time, I wasn't ready to enjoy summer anywhere.
--- pp.107-108
Summer is a season that makes greenery more abundant, but it is also a difficult time for flowers to grow comfortably.
Flowers quickly wither and die in the hot sun, wind, and high temperatures.
As someone who usually likes to give flowers as gifts and sometimes buys flowers to cheer me up, that's the one thing I miss about summer.
But now that summer is coming, how happy I am that beautiful flowers are appearing everywhere, for free.
--- pp.112-113
The 500-scooter beer mug with a handle was as cold as ice, as if it had been in the refrigerator for a long time, and the beer filled to the brim, slightly frosted, was shining a transparent yellow.
The cream foam that rose to a thickness of about 5 centimeters on the top of the glass was as firm as an unshakable bed mattress.
When you first pick it up, it feels heavy, but it won't take more than two minutes for this glass to become lighter.
Since ancient times, the first draft beer of the day should be drunk in one gulp, as long as your respiratory tract allows.
We clinked our glasses together in a hurry and poured ourselves a beer, feeling as if we were refueling ourselves.
--- pp.129-130
Why do I like summer the best?
Because summer is the season when everything is revealed to the world.
Even I, who often pretends to be cool and indifferent, can't help but become carefree in the summer.
The blemishes and wrinkles on your face that are clearly visible under the hot sunlight, your face that quickly turns red, sweat that flows endlessly, and the flab that shows no matter how hard you try to hide it, you are concerned, but in a moment, you think, 'Ah, that's it!'
Maybe I love summer so much because of the boldness and defenselessness that only summer can provide.
--- pp.152-153
Since I started living with a dog, walking is what starts my day and what ends my day.
A walk at night, especially in summer, is truly a blessing.
As the midday heat fades and I take a leisurely stroll through the park, feeling the summer breeze blowing from the Han River, the manuscript that seemed particularly unfinished, the work contacts that were strangely out of touch, and the ever-troubling interpersonal relationships all seem like nothing special.
--- p.160
There's nothing special I want to say through this extremely personal summer story.
What is needed to enjoy summer is not conditions, but the heart, pure anticipation.
My dark past may be a bit of a letdown for those who truly enjoy and love summer, but there are people who cherish summer, even if it's in such a timid way.
You can love summer even without any great memories.
But, since summer is not something that can be passed over so simply, I thought I'd give it a try.
It's like a love letter to summer, writing about why I love summer.
I like this about you.

Publisher's Review
Vacations, swimming, daytime drinking, muscle shirts, exes…
What We Talk About When We Talk About Summer
When I was launching the 'Anyway Series', I had an interview with a newspaper.
To the reporter's final question, "What is your anyway?" I answered without a moment's hesitation, "Summer!"
Yes, I love summer that much.
This is not a relative evaluation among 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter', but an absolute evaluation of 'What I like the most'.
So, I had a lot of fun making 『Anyway, Summer』.
I often had to put down my red pen and cheer internally at stories that resonated with me to the point where I thought, 'Could it be that the author has entered and left me?'
For example, something like this.
“I still remember the feeling of lukewarm water gushing out from the faucet in the playground sink as soon as gym class ended one day in early summer.
I can't forget the afternoon during summer vacation in my first year of high school, when I was sad to part ways with my friends even after my supplementary classes were over, so I stood at the bus stop, watching one bus after another, and chatting away.
I can't forget the cool breeze that blew while I was running along the Han River on a hot afternoon, my heart throbbing as if it was going to burst out of my mouth, and the way home around midnight, staggering along with a hard drive in my mouth and a plastic bag of beer hanging in one hand.
“I wanted to become an adult as soon as possible, and I grew up this much with those summer moments.”
There's also this part.
“What I missed back then wasn’t summer, but me in summer.
“I wanted to meet myself again, the me who liked myself every summer, the me who somehow looked amazing, the me who pushed all my worries and anxieties far away, and who was as sparkling and vibrant as the season.”
Do you see the common thread? In this book, author Kim Shin-hoe recalls the bright memories of last summer, while striving to discover the "me" that dwelled within them and grew alongside them.
As I take out my summer clothes and put them on, I worry about my body that is concerned about what others think. As I break up with the lover I met and loved in the summer, I face the real me that I lost trying to please the other person. As I eat the Shine Muscat I bought at the department store fruit corner on the day I signed the contract for this book, I think about the importance of being kind to myself.
My insignificant 'summer pride' was quickly overshadowed by his extreme summer love, which did not stop at praising the object of his affection, but quietly observed the 'heart of loving' something and the small changes that that heart made possible, and even attributed such changes to summer.
It's summer again.
This book, dressed in new clothes, speaks to us as we stand before this wonderful season.
As always, this year's summer will be "bold, hot, spontaneous, fast, yet leisurely and generous," and "what you need to enjoy such a summer is not conditions, but the heart."
I am delighted to be publishing a revised edition of this book on the threshold of summer.
