A Dad's Guide to Work Life: Empowering His Daughter
A Dad's Guide to Work Life: Empowering His Daughter
Description
Book Introduction
Not a life lived to work,
Live a life to love

This is a story about work know-how and workplace management, told with affection by a 'workplace expert dad' who has been a civil servant for 32 years to his second daughter, a new employee, and his first daughter, who has been working for three years.
The author, former Vice Minister Kim Hwa-dong, is a traditional bureaucrat who has held various high-ranking positions, including vice ministerial level. He decided to organize his work experience after his two daughters joined the company.

The workplace tips introduced here are loving advice that only a father can give, not senior colleagues.
It contains the warm heart of a parent who hopes that their children will grow up to be loved by the company and proudly fulfill their roles, along with the rigorous practical experience that only a senior with 32 years of experience can impart.
It also includes principles that people currently working can fully utilize, such as, “Even bosses are thirsty for praise,” “Greetings are sometimes unfair,” “Reporting is all about timing,” “Don’t eat alone,” and “Be silent when there is no need to speak.”

The basic attitude he emphasizes most in work life is to find work voluntarily rather than just doing what you are told, and to help your superiors and colleagues grow, thereby growing along with them.
It clearly and easily conveys 18 practical techniques, including related speaking skills, report writing tips, how to develop note-taking habits, how to build connections, and social etiquette.
It also provides detailed advice on the concerns of office workers, focusing on real-life examples from their work lives, including how to dress for the first day of work, what to do in the early days of employment, how to set the tone in external meetings, and how to manage work-related stress.

Into the book
When your boss achieves something, don't be stingy with your praise.
When you successfully complete a report on next year's business plan in front of the boss, close a big contract, smoothly resolve a difficult civil complaint, or your latest project becomes a hit, don't skimp on praise.
If there is no such opportunity, at least say, “I like the color of your tie today.”
Don't narrowly view praise of your superiors as flattery. Instead, think of it as providing appropriate feedback that allows them to develop further. ---p.62

The most common reason bosses get upset about reports is not the content, but the timing.
Considering this, rather than trying to get 100 points, it would be a good idea to aim for an 85 point level and report as quickly as possible.
The remaining 15 points are the responsibility of the reporting supervisor.
Don't bear the burden alone.---p.125

If you are not someone who cannot drink at all, you can accept the first glass as a courtesy and then drink it slowly for a long time.
Even just showing that you are 'drinking' alcohol shows that you are trying to fit in with the team atmosphere.
Respond to alcohol and drinking parties with consideration for their positive aspects, but avoid indiscriminate drunkenness and disorderly behavior under any circumstances. ---p.216

Reading is an investment in yourself, in research and development.
Although the effect may not be immediate, you can expect it to gradually improve over a long period of time.
Just as companies and countries place a high value on R&D, don't neglect R&D for yourself, that is, reading, and make it a priority when spending your allowance.
Especially, as an ordinary person without any outstanding talent, you have no choice but to cultivate your inner mine through consistent reading. ---p.241

As we live our lives, there is a time for everything.
Flowers are most beautiful when they bloom when they should.
If you miss the timing, the color fades and the meaning is halved.
As we live, there are times to think and times to act.
Likewise, there is a time to work and a time to love.
Among them, love is probably the best.
Life should be lived to love, not to work.
---p.279

Publisher's Review
With a warm parental heart and 32 years of practical experience
A personalized work life guide

A "workplace expert dad" who worked as a civil servant for 32 years at the Economic Planning Board, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and other organizations, has published a book titled "A Dad's Guide to Work Life that Gives Empowerment to His Daughter," which shares his work know-how with his second daughter, who is a new employee, and his first daughter, who has been working for three years.
The author of this book, former Vice Minister Kim Hwa-dong, is a traditional bureaucrat with 15 years of experience in lower-level positions, 10 years in middle management (section chief, bureau chief), and even high-ranking positions at the vice-ministerial level. He had been feeling sorry for not being able to pay attention to his children's education, and decided to organize his work life know-how with his two daughters' employment as an opportunity.
The tips presented in this book—how not to run away from work, how to get along with your boss, how to think creatively, and how to pursue what you want—are all loving advice that only a father can give, not senior colleagues at work.
It also contains the warm hearts of parents who hope that their children will grow up to be loved by the company and proudly fulfill their roles, along with the rigorous practical experience that only a senior with 32 years of experience can impart.
Advice like, "Even bosses are thirsty for praise," "Greetings are sometimes unfair," "Reporting is all about timing," "Don't eat alone," and "Keep silent when you don't need to talk" are basic principles that even existing office workers can easily apply.
This book will serve as a detailed and thorough guide for those just starting out in the workforce, providing them with the principles and direction of work life, and for those already employed, allowing them to reflect on the meaning of work.

As my daughter's training was ending and she was about to receive her official appointment, I wrote down some tips (things to keep in mind) that I had been thinking about, hoping that she would adapt well to company life.
There are well over twenty of them, but I've compressed them into eighteen to make them easier to understand at a glance and put them on one A4 sheet of paper.
I put it on the front of my closet so that people could see it every day on their way to work, and the reaction seemed to be good.
While I was at it, I decided to refine it more systematically so that it could be helpful to my peers in similar situations.
With the same heart as giving it to a daughter.

18 Practical Response Manuals to Avoid Running Away from Work

This book is broadly divided into four parts, taking into account the cycle of work life.
The order is: the preparation when you first step into the workplace (Part 1: Lay the foundation for the future), the basics when you start working in earnest (Part 2: Build a solid foundation like a cornerstone), establishing your own position within the organization (Part 3: Willingly take on the role of a keystone), and continuous self-development and change (Part 4: Sharpen your edge when it becomes dull).
The author emphasizes that the basic attitude toward work life is not to just do what you are told, but to seek out work voluntarily and help your superiors and colleagues grow, thereby growing along with them.
It clearly and easily conveys 18 practical techniques, including related speaking skills, report writing tips, how to develop note-taking habits, how to build connections, and social etiquette.
It also provides detailed and detailed counseling on the concerns of office workers, focusing on real-life examples from their work lives, such as how to dress on the first day of work, what to do in the early days of joining the company, how to deal with small mistakes that turn into big ones when hidden, how to have conversations that set the mood in external meetings, how to manage work stress, how to behave at drinking parties, how to deal with colleagues who procrastinate, and how to overcome lethargy.
While the author tells us to be faithful to our assigned duties, he also does not forget to advise, “You should live your life not to work, but to love.”
The hope that this will provide practical assistance to countless young professionals and make their lives a little happier resonates deeply with those taking their first steps into society.
This book, filled with a father's strict yet warm advice, will serve as a practical guide for young workers to cultivate their own inner strength by refining their work ethic and improving their practical skills.
