Description
Book Introduction
『Attraction』, 『The Wind Blows, I Like You』, 『The Person Next to Me』. Poet Lee Byeong-ryul, who has been loved by readers for his travel essay trilogy that still excites us with its titles alone, has published a new essay collection, 『Alone to Alone』, after five years. In this collection of essays, instead of traveling around the world, he begins to contemplate new places. This is a story about 'aloneness', something that the writer can best talk about and something he knows deeply about. As a poet, he sits alone at his desk, as a traveler, he goes on solo journeys. The posture and thoughts of being alone that he writes down, having naturally tuned in to the frequency of being 'alone' for a long time, resonate with countless lonely people scattered around the world. Also, through the author's calm sentences, sensitively captured scenes, and photos with a unique perspective, you will nod your head as you realize once again that 'there are things only I can do, things only I can have, and only I can do them alone.' |

I am the one who creates the waves of life
Everyone likes and loves alone
The camellia tree swayed briefly in the wind.
Just think of me for 10 minutes
The scenery of myself that I pretended not to know all this time
Think about the end once a day
Evidence of a Good Day
Food that covered me on a cold day
There's only one thing I wish for, to see you for a long time
Is it really goodbye now?
I feel like climbing the ridge is more than just one person.
I wish I could tell someone firmly
Look outside, it's the first snow.
One day, it will not disappear, but will remain
Where do you want to go with your packed lunch?
Radio in the back window seat
Why are you alone? It's okay.
If you ask me why I write, I will answer that I write because I am alone.
The reason you made me warm
I engraved a cat on my knife.
We have the ability to change course at the moment of need.
You are lost in your own world
Things that can't be helped can't be helped
Move to you
We met on a chair and parted on a chair
The inside of the beyond that I want to look into
We are ultimately sad because of our lack.
My heart beats once a day
If only we were each just a few raindrops
The code name is poet
Every night, like someone who has just finished a trip, good night
Cherry blossoms are blooming. Cherry blossoms are falling.
Draw the shape of love with a picture
The sound of people, the signal of love
A word to start loving
You will meet the person you want to meet.
We also have to choose when we talk about what kind of person we are.
Leave me in a state of ventilation
We will each live like that
A Midsummer Night's Concert
So that your mind doesn't deteriorate rapidly
Less drunk and less lonely
That's right, neither of them is bad.

Into the book
Tonight again, time speaks meaningfully to me.
Will you grow tonight too?
Or are you just going to pass it by?
I am the one who creates the waves of life.
Ordinary people ride the waves created by others, but special people ride the waves they create, carrying many others.
---From "I am the one who creates the waves of life"
What a mountain may mean to some may be meaningless to me, it has a clear meaning.
I think about it every time I cross a mountain.
Every time I struggle to climb a mountain, I think of the difficult times I spent traveling with someone.
It may seem like you're climbing a mountain, but it's actually a process of meeting 'one person', just following the process.
To know, to meet, to like and to love a person.
And then the expression disappears, and it moves away… … because it feels like climbing a mountain.
Having one person means climbing that one person and finally seeing the summit, doesn't it?
One carries everything of a person on his head and chest.
---From "I feel like climbing the ridge is more than just one person"
I have to take control of this life.
To do that, instead of waiting to see who I will meet on my life's path, I must decide who I will meet and place that person on my life's path.
The belief that we will meet the person we want to meet 'brings' us to that person.
---From "You will meet the person you want to meet"
Travel alone.
All the compasses, signs, and clocks in the world move their needles according to my movements.
Travel alone.
There is no need to talk about people who are not there, and moreover, there is no need to hear the same stories that you heard here.
Traveling alone means getting farther and farther away from the person who protects me, from the person close to me who gives me affection and keeps me from being lonely, and especially from the womb of my mother who raised me so small.
And it's about erasing with a black magic marker what we confidently believed we already knew.
If you don't want to have what's common in the world, if you don't want to do what everyone else is doing, then the things that only you can do and have are only possible when you are alone.
---From "Goodnight Every Night, Like Someone Who Has Just Finished a Journey"
So, one of two things.
Is it better to be alone or with someone else?
Going to a bar alone instead of together, going to the theater alone.
Traveling alone and having time to yourself.
The choice is not something that is forced upon you, nor is it a painful, stealthy act.
Even in moments like that, when it seems like nothing will happen, you want to make eye contact with someone, and that small encounter might comfort you... ...Being in a good state for a little while is also probably a foreseeable choice.
---From "We must choose when we talk about what kind of person we are"
How can I be alone?
How can you not care about anything just because you live alone?
The plants won't say anything to me, but I can talk to them.
Because I know that if I don't speak to them, they will wither and die forever in the world they were born into.
I want to live as 'me', always presenting myself with an appropriate amount of risk, just like bringing numerous plants into my world.
Will you grow tonight too?

Publisher's Review
Things that only I can do and have
It is only possible if you are alone.
“Why are you alone? I’m fine.”
『Attraction』 and 『The Wind Blows, I Like You』, travel essay collections that capture exotic landscapes from over 100 countries around the world, and 『The Person Next to Me』, which contains stories of landscapes and people encountered while traveling across the eight provinces of Korea.
Author Lee Byeong-ryul, who has been loved by readers for his three volumes of prose, is publishing a new prose collection, “Alone to Alone.”
This is a new collection of essays published five years after completing the so-called 'travel trilogy'.
The author has been traveling diligently for over ten years, or even longer, publishing three volumes of travel essays.
Thanks to this, countless readers have been thrilled many times while reading the author's books, fallen in love many times, and packed their bags and left for somewhere many times.
Even after that, the author, unable to help himself with his innate traveler's genes and his love for people, continued to seek out new travel experiences.
This trip, unlike any other trip I've taken before, is a wasteland with no specific place names and no locations on the map.
That's right, a journey to meet countless lonely people scattered around the world.
A place where you can't travel everywhere even if you walk for a very long time.
The traveling writer is also alone.
In this book, ‘Alone to Alone’, author Lee Byeong-ryul refers to himself as a ‘lone person’.
That's because I've spent a lot of time alone and I've used that time more richly than anyone else.
In the book, the author is naturally alone, traveling alone, walking alone, and spending precious time alone in silence.
A person who creates time alone even when he is among people.
As a writer who likes people, his gaze is always directed towards people, but among them, his heart is more drawn to those who are alone.
I am curious about the abundant time they spend raising them.
If the people and scenery encountered during travel were the main stories of previous works, this book focuses more on the 'alone' self and the 'alone' others.
At that point, there will also be an intersection of 'us' that touches each other.
Because of this, I focus more on spaces where I can be alone rather than specific places like travel destinations.
These are places where we are often alone, such as on a hike, in a small log cabin, in a studio, in a guesthouse, or on a train or bus going to the final destination.
Also, meeting people who are good at taking care of themselves, records of my first overseas trip, and looking back on my 'firsts' by looking at broadcast scripts from when I worked as a radio writer...
The book is filled with detailed records of times when I was able to deepen and enjoy myself solely because I was alone.
These scenes and thoughts, combined with the rich photographs that capture the author's unique perspective, create a feeling as if one is present in the space.
As you read, pause between sentences, look between the lines, and think, the photos in the square frames will carefully speak to you and fill the space in your thoughts.
In this way, the writer and the reader will be alone with the bookshelf between them, but there will come a moment when their stopped footsteps and gazes will pass each other.
We will each live like that
People who are alone are inevitably faced with many questions.
Simple questions like "Why are they alone?" and "How are they alone?" surround them, and they are left feeling embarrassed and having to come up with appropriate answers.
However, the author simply passes over these questions as if they were Zen questions.
“Why are you alone? I’m fine.”
Even if we are alone now, there will come a time when we will be placed among people, and even if we are not alone now, there will inevitably be a time when we will be alone.
Therefore, I don't necessarily think that you, the questioner, may find yourself in such a situation someday.
It is clear that those who can make good use of their alone time are also good at managing their own solitude.
Also, we who are alone know very well that emphasizing 'alone' does not mean ignoring 'togetherness'.
After closing the bookcase, you will feel completely alone and lonely.
You might even feel like you've met a writer alone.
After closing the book, what comes is loneliness, fulfillment, comfort, or a new feeling that is not something else, and it will be different for each person.
Because we all live our lives with countless hearts.
I will just hand over the book to another person as if shaking hands with them.
It is only possible if you are alone.
