"Baeksan Baeksaek" is not simply a "mountaineering essay." It is "a journey of one person who records human life through nature and finds self-healing within it."

In the preface, author Kim Myeong-su confesses:

“This book wasn’t just about celebrating my own accomplishments, but also about leaving something meaningful for my beloved family.”

He learned "true rest" in life while climbing mountains. He wrote this book to share that learning with his family and readers. He also hopes it will serve as a "window of indirect experience" for those with disabilities who find it difficult to climb mountains, and a "guide to safe and enjoyable mountaineering" for those aspiring to begin.

A hundred mountains, a hundred colors

The book's title, "Baeksanbaeksaek (白山百色)", embodies the author's philosophy. It means, "There are a hundred mountains with a hundred colors."
The color doesn't just represent the natural scenery or seasonal colors. It's the color of emotions created by the hearts of mountain climbers.

The snowy landscape of midwinter was a quiet white, the forest path of spring was a green of newness, the rocky ridge of summer was a red of passion, and the reed fields of autumn were a gold of loneliness - like this, the mountains always welcomed him with different colors.

As the author recorded the name of each mountain, he also wrote down the color of the air, weather, wind, and emotions of that day.
There is no flowery rhetoric in his writing.
Instead, there is the warmth of honest feelings and reflection.

While climbing 100 mountains, he naturally wrote down 100 scenes from his life. These scenes are not simply a travelogue, but a record of human growth: learning about life, reflecting on relationships, and training himself.

Message to readers

《Baeksan Baeksaek》 is a record of ‘completion’ and a record of ‘beginning.’
The author says this at the end of the book:

“Climbing a mountain is ultimately about climbing myself.
“It wasn’t the moment I reached the top that changed my life, but the things I learned along the way.”

Each mountain is different. For some, it may be a reality they must endure, for others, it may be the journey of finding love again. But they all have one thing in common: we are all climbing our own mountain.
