Birthday and Life
Description
Book Introduction
The eleventh story of Nanda's timely arrival in 2025!
Poet Oh Byeong-ryang collected these things every day
Of, by, for November
Just one book to read
If you have the heart to do it
Everyone had a good time
The twenty-third book in the Nanda Publishing Company's Timely Series, November 2025, features the protagonist, poet Oh Byeong-ryang, who debuted in 2013 with the publication of Literature and Thought.
Even if we cannot make promises, this fall, when we wish for good luck, for the poet, November is enough to be a belated tribute to all the days we can long for (author's words).
『Birthday and Life』 is Oh Byeong-ryang's first collection of prose, published 12 years after his debut. Through six poems, miscellaneous writings, short essays, and letters, he writes about the hearts of guests who came and went, who loved and suffered, like guests.
A saying that says that if you turn your birthday over, your life will appear.
The words "one day" and "one life" that run through those days contain the events and accidents of the birth and journey of shattered and broken stars that began with an explosion in a distant universe that had nothing to do with me, and the fragmented wounds.
Pain that comes equally to everyone, isn't that element perhaps the sum of life itself? (p. 105) "Has love ever had a conclusion?" For him, the attitude toward love, rather than the technique of love, is the minimum and only condition for finding poetry (November 11, Miscellaneous).
Today, I'm coming without any reason.
Just as every day is the next day, we wear the same weather and the same seasons, and we each live our own time differently within the same time.
In his first poetry collection, “Why is Confession in the Form of a Letter?” published in 2024, the poet Byeong-ryang (“You, too, had a disease in your name,” p. 25) lingered in the empty space of love created by “death, the incomprehensible constant that fills the world” (Bong-jun Ko) with “the act of trying to build it every time/the struggling heart of that gesture.”
But if you believe that there is a life that is comparable to a lifetime, wouldn't the world become a place filled with sorrow ("If you look closely at pain, it's all human faces").

Into the book
If you look closely at the pain, they are all human faces.
Wouldn't that be the case for everyone? I'm sure there were many people who gave me illness and medicine, just like me.
I am ashamed, but I am still living, and I am still living because I cannot forgive.
There is no way to completely heal pain by distancing oneself from others, and pain cannot be excluded from human affairs, so we must endure those who have no immunity.
Everyone lives like that, so I hope they stay healthy and alone.
--- From "If you look closely at pain, it's all a person's face"
When I was a kid, you guys had some cool nicknames too.
We pay tribute to those valuable nicknames that are still valid, or unfortunately have expired.
Even if it's not like that now, I've never cut ties with anyone, even during those special times, so I'm sure our memories are close.
--- From "When I Was Obeng"
I want to quietly land in front of the butterfly, untie its leash, and stroke its slender neck for a long time.
If it's okay now, I want to tell you to fly now.
I want to sweep away your small and precious heart endlessly. If it weren't for love, which star would I see it on?
--- From "Mung Bean and Butterfly"
I slowly turned the pages of the blank page and eventually
One is written on the last page
That's why we need a name
I won't write a diary
The more you learn from pain, the easier it is to forgive.
I write pain into your silent mouth, like a dragon at the door
Hejin's eyes are black and flowing
If you connect the solid lines, you get a cut line,
Sleet was falling all around.
--- From "Forecast"
The flower garden is dry
Without knowing who the source of the fire is
As you cross the road through the fields, you can smell the distant burning smell.
It's not even fall yet, but I'm already
That smell is so good, it's stuffy,
You said you were going to die, beating your chest
I'm not asking you to hug me
Without even knowing how to ask you to leave
Autumn is coming

Publisher's Review
Still, what catches my eye is something that is impossible anyway
I am getting better, the word together
Class 6, Grade 1, Class 7, Grade 2, Class 1, Grade 4, Class 9 (page 171), the large and heavy dark red wooden back door of the classroom, and me, tiny as I am, struggling to open that door and enter (“Teachers”).
When I recall the road, the nap, the scenery, and the smell of that time, I see myself that day when I was hungry (「Infinitely Long」).
He thinks that life is like a thread of relationships, and that we can guess its course in the form of a bundle, so we should make it into a small, solid ball of yarn (p. 121).
Still, what catches the eye is, in any case, something that has no way out ("Nokdu and the Butterfly").
In that way, some beings enter our eyes and hearts and become our family.
There are houses I want to visit once or twice, even if it's a bit of a detour ("When I Was Obin").
We live forgetting that no news is good news, but we can figure out a lot just by hearing a voice.
If the first word is "Mo Hae-yong," it means there's nothing special about it, but if you say "hyung," I get impatient and ask, "Why? What is it?" (To P)
Even when I call again, he just stares off into the distance for a long time without responding, and the loneliness hanging on my toes is warm.
I am getting better, the words together (pp. 62-63).
A distance that is not rude (page 191), a distance that is visible but cannot be measured (page 179), like the chicken thighs that need to be cooked between medium and low heat (recipe from November 4).
It's better to say that you don't have to try than to say that you tried.
There were times when my heart just poured out
A dry autumn comes like straw ripening in the sun.
The more you learn from pain, the easier it is to forgive ("Forecast").
Even after many overlappings, the dark things are ultimately seen as difficult colors (page 46) at the crossroads of winter.
To the poet, happiness is fleeting and unhappiness is inevitable.
Happiness was a childhood treasure hunt hidden in the grass, and the odds of finding the note with the treasure were slim to none.
There were days when my heart suddenly burst out at the words, "You don't have to try hard," rather than the words, "I tried hard." ("To You Who Are Far Away, Who Will Never Come Again")
A simple soup with pork kimchi stew and glass noodles.
The soup my mother learned from her mother's mother wasn't anything special, but it wasn't something you could eat outside.
The mother's current situation (November 22nd miscellaneous article) where the poet, who was trying to get up after making a lame excuse, ends up sitting down at the dinner table.
Perhaps, at the moment when this cozy feeling was faintly rubbed and sloshed into his mouth, he learned the heart of an adult who does not pray carelessly, but steadily works on his own work, believes only in himself, and does not neglect love (letter dated November 24).
Even if it is not necessarily right, a heart that gently embraces any mistakes or wrong times (page 120).
The alarm clock rang, signaling midnight.
So you're saying it's a dream?
Even a grown man cries
A family that closes the door wide
Will the door open?
Why will the door open again?
I looked up at the ceiling in silence - part of "Small Water Flood"
Introducing the 'Timely' series.
Timely and appropriate with the appropriateness of poetry!
Instead of seasonal food, read a seasonal book.
Nanda's 'Timely' series continues in 2025.
Twelve books written in relay by twelve poets.
One story a day, one book a month, 365 stories a year.
What kind of heat is summer to the poet, and what kind of joy is winter?
How does the poet treat January 1st, and how is December 31st different in poetry?
We take a peek into the daily lives of poets who write poetry every single day, without fail, custom-tailored to their needs.
I asked the poets to each take on a 'moon' that was perfect for them and play freely in and out of their poems.
One article per day, so thirty or thirty-one articles were written per month.
(Because of the calendar, there is a February with twenty-eight poems.) Above all, of course, I made newly written poems the pillar of the book.
Together, we were surrounded by thoughts that became poetry, a day we met through poetry, a love letter to poetry, and a fierce struggle with poetry.
In short, it is a collection of poetry as well as prose.
One thing is certain, however: there is no day without poetry for a poet.
Since each episode is not very long, it would be perfect to read one episode a day from the 1st to the 31st.
If you read it for twelve months, your bookshelves will be filled with poems every day.
The year will be full of poetry.
If we read each day as if we were turning the pages of a diary or tearing off a calendar, our clock will become our four seasons.
So, it's a good book to read anytime, and it's even better when you read along!
This project started with the idea that there are only seasonal foods and seasonal books.
Looking at those names, I believe you will nod in agreement that the moon and the poet are truly a perfect match, and that the meeting of time and poetry is truly apt.
The diary from January 1st, the poem from May 5th, and the note from December 25th will knock on your door in the morning and guard your bedside at night.
If you look at it that way, these writings might not all be one letter.
A letter sent by poetry every day, the content must be about love.
