Description
Book Introduction
Artist Lee Rang, who has drawn new rhythms with his three regular albums, “Yon Yon Son,” “God’s Play,” and “The Wolf Appeared,” and has impressed the public with his honest and clear voice, has published a collection of lyrics and prose, “Playing the Guitar Softly.”
This book contains the lyrics of a total of 37 songs, including all songs included in the regular album and unreleased songs, along with the stories contained in each song.
You can read the 'history' of artist Lee Rang, who willingly opened his arms to the marginalized and spoke frankly about the anger he felt toward the world.
"Playing the Guitar Softly" reorganizes the life of Lee Rang, which has filled dozens of notebooks, into the flow of lyrics, allowing us to examine how the story told through song began and where it is flowing.

While writing songs, making films, and engaging in various artistic endeavors fueled by the energy of anger, Lee Rang has never run away from the love and shame he discovers within them. He is an artist who stands outside the summarized world and tirelessly addresses social issues that need to be addressed.
As the lyrics of the recently released single “SHAME” say, “I loved even this discomfort and unfamiliarity/ I wanted to go further with this love,” it may be an attempt to bring the quiet resentment that has been boiling inside of him to the level of love.
His records, which were gradually built up in the process, became someone's courage and a wide circle that could be shared.
On the front are lyrics, and on the back are stories of life written down in bold letters.
You can observe what kind of scent of life 『Playing the Guitar Softly』 leaves behind and lingers.

Into the book
“When I was around twenty, when I could play the guitar a little, I started doing all the things I do when I can’t sleep while playing the guitar.
“I listened to the soft sounds of the guitar, slowly filling the small room with a weight quite different from oxygen, and wrote my diary with my mouth in time with the sound and beat.”
--- "You're too clingy with your friend-02.
From "Your Rhythm"

“Most of the songs on my first album were quickly created during my peak composition period, as if I was breathing, but this song took a lot of time and effort to create.
After many experiments, I refined the composition and played around with adding and removing elements such as oral songs and play songs.
We also considered various vocal recording methods to properly capture the concept of a round song.
Up until this point, I had no musical collaborators, so I spent a lot of time working with myself, the built-in microphone of my white MacBook, a photo booth, and GarageBand to complete the song.
It was fun to experiment.
“Isn’t the fun of being a creator to give yourself a mission and then solve it?”
--- "Assigning and solving homework to yourself - 08.
From "Yonyonson"

“In fact, for a long time after that, I was in a state of burnout and made a resolution every day not to cross the border of death.
To do that, I had to write a pathetic diary.
The loss of a loved one, the time, the pain, never goes away.
I never wanted to go through it again, but I knew full well that I would.
So I kept thinking about death.
And the pain that my death will add to someone else's suffering.
It was a pain that we didn't want to give back because we loved each other.
I had to think about it, bear with it, bear with it, bear with it.
“I didn’t know what to do, so I cried and wrote a pathetic diary.”
--- "I'm writing a pathetic diary - 11.
From "Diary"

“I wanted to believe that I was the one with the good story.
I wanted to give up my life every moment, but when I created something with that mindset, when that something remained and spread on my behalf, when people who saw and heard it said they saw and heard it well, my life was extended.
“Those reactions and impressions seem to have extended my life.”
--- "I always worked hard - 01.
From "God's Play"

“As I write this while listening to the songs made by Lee Rang in the past, I really don’t know if I am the real Lee Rang or not, if it is true that Lee Rang in the past really made these songs, if my memories are accurate or not, and if everything is true or not.
What should I say… … I feel like I have become a long-time secretary who knows a lot about you.
“I participate in the history of this place, I relive the history of this place, and I live within the history of this place.”
--- 「History of a Living Person-03.
From "Into the Story"

“I believed in God from a very young age, but it was difficult to believe.
Every night, I would sleep in a room with my family, look up at the ceiling in the dark room with the lights off, and pray in my heart.
'Please, just put a drop of water on my forehead.
“Then I will really believe you.”
--- "I don't know why - 09.
From "Why Do I Know"

“Why and how should we live?
I don't know, but maybe there are times when you have to incorporate it into your work as if you found a hint.
In this song it says:
“I have to tell you my story.”
--- “Everyone in the world is addicted to stories - 02.
From "Dialogue"

“I am just now learning that I have a body, and that I feel and experience things with that body, and that I call it life.
Recognizing that fragility, I decided to place myself in a world that is not infinite and experience finitude.
“I love finite beings in a finite world.”
--- From "Love without shame is not love - SHAME"

Publisher's Review
“Only I can say this.”
Thirty-seven songs spoken with anger and rage
Traces of life written firmly behind the lyrics

From songs created and recorded with the basic programs installed on the 'Whitey MacBook' to songs that resonate through the streets marching with the world's anger, the musical world of artist Lee Rang has constantly moved, grown, and spread from people's hearts to hearts.
Through the three regular albums released so far, "Yonyonson" (2012), "God's Play" (2016), and "A Wolf Appeared" (2022), he won the Best Folk Song Award at the 14th Korean Popular Music Awards, the Best Folk Album Award at the 19th Korean Popular Music Awards, and the Album of the Year Award, establishing himself as an artist who is called by the times.
Lee Rang's lyric-lyric book, "Playing the Guitar Softly," which contains the lyrics of 37 songs he has released and the stories behind them, has been published by Achimdal, and it shows the musical spectrum that has broadened over the time he has lived, not only in Korea but also in Japan and Taiwan.
This book is a compilation of lyrics from previous releases, as well as statements about life intertwined with each song.

Lee Rang, who has moved away from the commonly used 'lyric-like' narrative and has created his own story based on his experiences and sang with an honest voice, has never stopped 'speaking' about the world.
Using his own diary as the basis, he listens to his own story most closely, yet he also tells stories that seem to speak on behalf of others, and he has been constantly connected to the world.
Listeners and readers have discovered deep inner stories they could not enter on their own through Irang's songs, and that empathy has created a transparent solidarity of hearts, and both the artist and the listeners/readers are passing through a certain time.
Without erasing the feeling of being together.

I started using it in my twenties, and now I have dozens of palm-sized Moleskine notebooks, each filled with countless memories of bumping into and practicing.
From song lyrics to diaries of all sorts of days, names I can't pronounce, notes steeped in life... This book began among a pile of records that have sustained life.
In this book, scribbles and notes taken from actual notebooks were inserted inside the book to add a symbol of the original story of Irang, and the composition follows the order of the album to naturally recreate the transition from 'songs to listen to' to 'songs to read'.

This book is not simply a collection of lyrics and creative notes on lyrics.
It clearly shows how much the songs he sang were connected to life, and how desperate his life was at every moment as he never stopped speaking to the world with his anger.
Also, we focus on the story we have by putting the lyrics of the songs we have sung on paper without any melody.
As the author says, people are addicted to stories, but the world is a good place where people are curious about stories, can tell stories, and can listen to stories, because there are people who have the courage to 'speak'.
This is also a person who holds onto that courage and thinks about how his art can be a way to save the world.

“Can you convey me to you?”
Speaking, Showing Up, Surviving - What Irang's Songs Taught Us

"Playing the Guitar Softly", which includes all the stories and lyrics of the 37 songs he has released so far, contains the long history of artist Lee Rang, who has chosen to "speak" with his own sound, perhaps without tuning or adjusting the instrument he has called "me" since his college days.
As he says, “I participate in the history of Irang, I relive the history of Irang, and I live within the history of Irang,” perhaps we too are in an important position to observe how the history of Irang is being used.
This song has the power to make us think about the other person's position or situation from a different perspective, the power to listen as well as speak, and the power to transform anger into love.

Fellow artist and main vocalist of Jaurim, Kim Yuna, wrote in her recommendation, “I Want to Hug You Tightly,” “As I turned the last page, I felt very sad that the story had ended.
As we all know, there aren't many books like that," he says.
It makes us look again at the 'drama' written by Lee Rang with a loving gaze that "watches the process of pain becoming sentences and music."
Kim Yoon-ha, a popular music critic who has been watching him with affection since his first album, said that, just as Minguinho was to Jeze in “My Lime Orange Tree,” Lee Rang’s songs are “a friend who was not there but felt like he was there.”
He introduces himself as “a friend who expresses his thoughts to the world with the same attitude and posture, anytime, anywhere, and says things that I would never have said.”
The honest story of learning through Irang's songs that one can also share friendship through songs is contained in the recommendation, "Irang's Songs: Making You Cry, Laugh, and Grow."

A person who is hungry, can't sleep, and even feels it's a luxury to hold back on loving, but still has a lot of love left to give to the cat and stories to tell.
Weren't all the knots woven into the song the strings that kept him in the world, the way he 'survived'?
The world of Lee Rang, who does not hold back from speaking and sings the voice that the world desperately needs, cannot be contained in a single book, but the lyrics written here and the stories written on the back of the lyrics will remain as a pleasant fragrance that cannot be missed not only by the artist but also by the listeners/readers.

When we listen to this song, we can understand what kind of world we live in.
If we listen to this song again, we can also understand how we survived.
The joy of knowing that it can be learned from the story pocket called song could also be obtained from Irang's song.
Since then, the friendship built through Irang's songs has given me the courage I need to protect myself and survive in the world.
This book could be a long letter, a diary written by someone… … or several places.
A place where songs rest, a place where songs rise, a place where they distort and unfold together, a place where they hide each other and reveal each other.
A place where anyone can listen and speak.
I hope you open the door to this book and stay with Irang's story.
