There was always a 'book' in the midnight reading.
Knowing how to comfort with warm affection,
A story that will make you nod your head in agreement with poet Oh Eun's 'heart'!
A revised edition of poet Oh Eun's prose collection, "Reading," will be published by Nanda.
『Reading』 is a collection of essays by poet Oh Eun, organized in chronological order by publication, containing the stories that remained after a series of processes of collecting, discarding, and refining the writings she wrote for various media outlets from October 2014 to March 2020.
Broadly speaking, the Hankook Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun form the two axes, and one article published in 『Daesan Culture』 is mixed in. Among the manuscripts, the one I wrote in the Kyunghyang Shinmun on June 1, 2016, and which was published in 『Dadokim』, “Leisure with a Reason,” was also introduced in a high school Korean language textbook.
From 2014 to 2020, the poet, with his characteristic sincerity, threw himself into the whirlwind of the world and recorded the daily life that his eyes encountered, the people his hands touched, and the love that his feet carried. Well, it is a prose of a different genre from the poems that juggle metaphors, analogies, and symbols and spin thoughts. This book makes you think that honesty, kindness, and transparency are great virtues in conveying the message.
The poet's previous prose collection, "You, Me, and Yellow," which was a collection of vanishing points that gathered into art, is a book that, although it is a prose of the same genre, it seems to greatly expand the universality of the story by touching on the "universe" called "daily life" in terms of its thematic aspect.
A story about our lives, our existence, which cannot be confirmed or asserted except for the fact that we are alive here and now.
Under the hope of that ‘existence,’ the poet seems to have been diligent in capturing, observing, and writing down the ‘existence’ as it is, like a ‘diary,’ until he discovered the true reason for that ‘existence.’
The reason why we remember every ordinary moment as a special moment is probably largely due to the poet's innocence in expressing the process in a nonchalant manner.
And I believe that the poet's deliberate but unobtrusive consideration of matching our eye level and footsteps with ours, which allows us to accompany the poet at every moment through his natural writing, is at work.
Behind that behavior, there is a voice that pats you on the back with this kind of voice… …

Into the book
Two children who looked like they had just started elementary school were engrossed in a game, looking at their cell phones.
It was a game where you had to crush candies to achieve missions.
Since everyone around me had been talking about this game so much, I was interested in it, so I stood from a distance and watched the two of them engrossed in it.
The words 'You Failed' appeared on the screen.
A child frowned.
“What does this mean?” “It means you failed.” The other child’s expression darkened.
I thought they looked so cute that I approached them and asked.
“Do you know what failure means?” “It means to play again.” I couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of the child answering so confidently.
The children began to put their heads together again and engrossed themselves in cracking open the candy.
Sweat also formed on my hands as I stood behind and watched.
When there was only one candy left, I think I swallowed it without realizing it.
Finally, when the last candy was broken, the words 'Level Completed' appeared on the screen.
The children cheered and I applauded because I was so impressed by their performance.
A child asked.
“Does this mean I’m successful?” “Yeah, it means I can move on to the next round.” I left the kids behind and went home to download the game on my phone.
And for three whole months, I had to go through countless failures.
Every time, I thought of the child's words.
“You want me to play another round?” As long as I can play another round, failure has not yet arrived.
I'm still on the way.

Since the period covered by 『Dadokim』 is from 2014 to 2020, it is true that the curve of change in our politics, history, economy, culture, etc. is depicted in various ways.
It was a time of many big and small events, and our hearts were often shaken by them.
In particular, the poet has experienced the loss of many people who were sick and loved ones.
Each time, I would share my sorrow by frequently incorporating memories of the late critic Hwang Hyeon-san, the late poet Heo Su-gyeong, and the poet's father, who were close to the poet, into this book. I think it was also because I was able to grant myself this strength that I was able to say that I was able to write this prose with the strength I had left after crying.
“Every time I went in to read and looked back as I came out, I was the one who received greater comfort.
“The thoughts I jotted down to remember that time became the writings included in this book.”
As I included all the thoughts and feelings I had been thinking about during that time, the original collection of prose reached 1,500 pages. During the process of binding together, I boldly discarded about a third of them, or nearly 100 pages, without any addition or subtraction. When it comes to expressing one's feelings, if one raises the level of one's mind just a little bit, such as 'joking', 'forced speech', or 'complaining', which one should keep a distance from, the poet's heart will become cold towards my writing.

Why is the heart so difficult?
The difficulty of it within me, my heart that seems to need to be touched or told by others to be discovered and known.
Poet Oh Eun's prose brings our hearts out before us through his specialty, the use of words.
It can be said that obedience is an act of obedience to someone weaker than oneself rather than to someone stronger than oneself.
When we say that “to comfort, embrace, and soothe the weaknesses of others” is what it means to comfort others, we can say that the virtue of this book is also demonstrated at that point.
Reading is not a hand that steps forward to find a solution.
Reading is not a hand that is raised to rebuke.
Reading a lot is soothing.
The direction after Dallam also requires each person's own initiative.
In that sense, I think this book is one in which the author and the reader become one as they read and write together.
