'I just want to space out.
Have you ever thought, "I'll feel better..."? Perhaps because there are so many people like that, a phenomenon called "Dalmong" has emerged, where people stare blankly at the moon jar at the National Museum of Korea.
Just looking at that round and generous appearance might make your heart feel a little warm.


[Morning Happiness is Smart], a newsletter introducing the collections of the National Museum of Korea, originated from articles written by museum curators.
Then one day, I started to wonder, 'What do people who visit museums think of when they see the artwork?'
So, we gathered various impressions from the audience.
The manuscripts sent with love by people from all walks of life contained special experiences and unique perspectives on their favorite artifacts.


Perhaps because their stories resonated deeply with me, my subscriber base grew from 10,000 to 100,000, and even voices expressed interest in publishing this writing in book form. This is how "Relics: Things That Are Truly Beautiful When You Look at Them Closely" was released to the world.
I wanted to make a book that would make you feel comfortable just by looking at it, like 'Dalmong' looking at the moon jar.

All the artifacts included in this book were part of someone's precious collection.
If I put my story into it, it is no longer just an object, but becomes ‘my one and only’.

When my grandmother, who became a late college student, sees the white porcelain pencil case, she is reminded of her grandfather's ceramic pencil case that used to be on his desk, and her heart is filled with emotion.
The daughter who saw the Buncheong ware water bottle was reminded of her mother who filled a thermos with water for her every season.


The book also contains scenes that give us an idea of ​​what the artifacts looked like when they were created.
A duck-shaped earthenware pottery made with the hope that the soul of the deceased will be safely delivered to the afterlife, and a grandfather's tou with a warm smile saying that you should not skip meals even in the afterlife, will gradually soften your heart.
The charm of "Relics: Things That Become Truly Beautiful the More You Look at Them" lies in the ability to experience living history while appreciating beautiful relics.

When selecting 100 artifacts and compiling them into a book, the most important thing I considered was that it could be displayed anywhere.
To ensure that the affection contained in the text is fully conveyed through photographs, the official National Museum of Korea illustrations are included in a 180-degree unfolded binding.
The winning works from the Museum Drawing Festival, which features interviews with children, also attract attention.
The more you look at the picture, the more you can see the children's sincerity in even the smallest details.


The appendix, “Meet the Curator,” contains behind-the-scenes stories about the museum that you won’t hear anywhere else.
The 'Gwaebul', a temple treasure and a project to appease those who perished during the Joseon Dynasty's war, adds to the surprise with its overwhelming size and splendor, comparable to that of a building.
It is also interesting to hear that when a hanging Buddhist painting is displayed at a museum, dozens of monks personally move the hanging Buddhist painting, then curators inspect every nook and cranny, and before displaying it, they bow three times.
