Description
Book Introduction
“Can you make a living from pottery?”
“If there is no path to where I want to go, I can make one!”

Confessions of a young potter who faced countless trials and setbacks to make a living.
A story of youth's challenges as he turns his dreams into reality through nine pilgrimages to Santiago and four years of rural life.

“Even in difficult circumstances and trials, we do not lose our dreams and challenges.
“The blood, sweat, and tears of youth, along with the earnestness of heart, will awaken your sleeping heart!”

“Isn’t there a cliff at the end?
Wouldn't the path I walk through be painful if it were thorny?
Won't it be too hot without any trees?
What if a wild animal suddenly appears?

Now, is it right to take a different path?

Don't worry about that, just be brave and go.

Who knows what lies at the end of the road?
“You have to go to find out.”

I was so captivated by the beauty of pottery that I decided to make pottery for the rest of my life.
Making a living as a potter has always been a journey of trials and frustrations!

An ordinary college student who majored in ceramics in college against his will decides to become good at it and make a living from it for the rest of his life.
After graduating and starting to decide everything on my own, there were many moments when things didn't go as planned.
There are so many things I want to do, but realistically, there aren't many things I can do, so the gap between my ideals and reality is growing wider and wider.
But even when faced with setbacks and trials, I get back up and focus on what I can do and the present, and do my best.

He started making and selling ceramic accessories, and gradually established himself through active participation in exhibitions and lectures.
But life doesn't always leave things the same, it always presents new challenges.
It was a studio of about 5 pyeong, but I was barely getting used to it by working all night, but then I suddenly had to vacate the office.
With that rent, you can't go anywhere in Seoul or its suburbs.
Also, the slump that comes from working day and night without success and only frustration and disappointment left has made me lose my will to live.
No matter how hard I struggled to get out of the slump, I just fell deeper into it.

But in the end, only I can control the direction and speed of my life.
If there is no road where you are going, make a road, and when you have to go slowly, go slowly!

Unable to decide where to go in the city with the money he had, he moved to Gangwon-do and lived alone in the countryside for four years. To escape his slump, he lived in the mountains and listened to his inner voice.
Every time, I thought of my dreams and goals.
As time went by, the ideal that had felt so distant was gradually becoming reality.

This book is not a self-help book with success stories.
Through the inner confession of an ordinary potter, we hope to understand and encourage the deep inner struggles and anguish of all young people who work hard to make their dreams and ideals a reality.

Into the book
Sometimes, when I'm walking down the street, I suddenly have that thought.
At first, you may think, "I'm glad I came this way, this is a good road," but as you continue walking, you may think, "Oh, this isn't it?"
When I think like that more often, I start to wonder if this is really the path I wanted and if it's right to keep going like this.
There were definitely a lot of good moments at first.
In times like that, you might think, 'I don't know!' Close your eyes and boldly open another door and go in.

Isn't there a cliff at the end?
Wouldn't the path I walk through be painful if it were thorny?
Won't it be too hot without any trees?
What if a wild animal suddenly appears?
Now, is it right to take a different path?

Don't worry about that, just be brave and go.
Who knows what lies at the end of the road?
You have to go to find out.

Trials and tribulations always lead me down a new path.
Sometimes, on the path we are inevitably led down, we encounter better things than we could have imagined.
If I become the master of the road, even a crisis can become an opportunity.
Only I can make that.
Because only I can open new doors on the road.

There comes a time when we all have to force ourselves to do something we don't like.
And whether it's good or bad depends on my efforts and my heart.
There's no need to force yourself to like something you hate, but sometimes, if something you hate has to become a part of the way you live, accepting it and making it something you like is one way to do it.
If I can't change the situation, changing my thoughts is my best option and ability.

Until I cried out loud in front of the department office because I hated majoring in ceramics, I never even dreamed that ceramics would become my lifelong career.
Rather than just saying no to something, it's not a bad idea to try to like it.
Sometimes, those choices can gift you with a destiny that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
--- pp.33~40

In between hard times
There are small, invisible happinesses
That little happiness
It helps you easily endure difficult moments like a storm.

--- p.49

Even if it takes a bit of a detour to reach your goal, even if it takes a bit of a detour, rather than trying to find a shortcut and get there faster than others, you should walk along that long road, finding your own purpose and walking silently.
Then that path will become a lifelong stepping stone in my life.
I believe so.
As it has been so far.
Always support me.

--- p.75

Signs along the Camino de Santiago will let you know if you are on the right path to Santiago de Compostela.
These monuments, which stand tall here and there along the road, are especially important at the fork in the road.
You need to know which direction you are pointing to so you can go the right way.
How wonderful it would be if we had a tombstone like this that showed us the direction in our lives.
It would be good to think of the voice of my heart as a tombstone and go wherever my heart leads me.
Sometimes following your heart rather than your head can lead to fewer regrets.

--- p.124

Money is an essential thing in life.
Without money, there are many things you can't do, and life becomes uncomfortable.
But money isn't the most important thing in life.
Money is just a tool for my life and dreams.
The most important thing is 'me'.
If you have faith in yourself, you can get back up no matter how difficult the situation may be.
The month and a half of mountain living was happy and peaceful.
I was grateful to myself.
In an effort to somehow survive without making bad choices.
That was where my footsteps had reached.
In my aching heart, there was always a desire to get better, and there were small efforts I made toward that desire.

All the trials, hardships and mental anguish that have come to me have only made me stronger.
Adversities have always made my mind and soul stronger.
Everything that happened had a reason.
The moments a few months ago when I lost the meaning of life may have been a profound meaning from heaven that ultimately led me to the village in the mountains of Danyang where I am now.
So I crossed another big mountain.
--- pp.169~170

Everything passes.
Even the pain is sharp like a knife blade,
There were moments of happiness like fluttering cherry blossoms,
The pain that makes you feel like you can't breathe and die,
Even on nights when I couldn't sleep because of excitement and nervousness,
Even the moment when I was groaning and unable to speak,
The time when I loved you while abandoning myself,
There were times when anxiety and worry took precedence.

It all passes like that.

Publisher's Review
The 9th Camino de Santiago: Walking Life's Path at Your Own Pace

When I was in college, I read a book by Paulo Coyello about a protagonist who goes on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and I vaguely decided that I would go on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela someday.
From then on, I was busy with my college life, part-time job, and work life, but I only dreamed of it, so I quit my job and decided to go on a pilgrimage to Santiago.
The airfare was barely scraped together by making and selling ceramic accessories all night.
He decided to cover the remaining expenses by selling pottery during the pilgrimage, and thus set out on his first pilgrimage to Santiago.

Although I had to endure tremendous physical pain because I was too busy preparing for the expenses to prepare the essential physical strength, I was able to put aside my anxieties and worries about the future and enjoy the joy that comes from the simplicity of just focusing on walking.
Although I didn't have the financial or time resources, I have completed the Camino de Santiago nine times so far.
In this way, the pilgrimage to Santiago became an inseparable companion in the author's life.

Yellow arrows along the pilgrimage route show you the right way.
If you just follow the arrows, you won't get lost.
It would be nice if we had arrows like this in our lives, but unfortunately, we don't have arrows to show us the direction.
Instead, you have your own goals and dreams.
Just follow those goals and dreams as arrows.

As you walk the pilgrimage route, your body signals you to take a short break.
If there's a cafe nearby, I go in, but when there isn't, I just sit on the street and eat the food I brought and take a break.
In Santiago, you decide your own walking pace and distance.
Just walk towards your destination at your own pace.
Life is the same.
Don't ignore the signals to rest, and don't feel anxious or sad if someone gets ahead of you.
You just have to go your own way, slowly, at your own pace.
In this way, the pilgrimage to Santiago is similar to the journey of life.

Walking the Camino de Santiago, you can experience in a nutshell what you have learned over the decades of your life: joy, sharing, and even sorrow.
Through his pilgrimage, the author came to realize the value of life that cannot be converted into anything else.

I want to be healthier than usual because I have to walk for a month carrying a backpack.
The habit of discarding and emptying things acquired to reduce the weight of the backpack.
Perseverance and patience to endure difficult times day after day.
Accepting the absence of thoughts and feelings.

A simple daily life that distances itself from the everyday.
The fact that life doesn't require as much as you think.
Interacting with people from all over the world, something that is not easy to do normally.
Meeting and talking with good people who share similar values.
A great opportunity to improve your foreign language skills by talking with foreign friends.
Realizing my limitations and finding the right level.
The pink-purple sky at sunrise and the glow of the sunset.
My favorite tortillas and other foods from the pilgrimage route.
Healthy enough to walk all day and eat as much as you want without gaining weight.
A feeling of gratitude for the little things, like the happiness of resting after washing up after a day's walk.
A healthy mind that can humbly accept anything.
Precious things that cannot be obtained easily, but can only be obtained through hardship.
Above all, a place where I can truly face myself.
While walking this path, you will experience the basics of food, clothing, shelter, eating, sleeping, clothing, meeting and parting with people, love, friendship, human relationships, wounds, pain,

This path of asceticism is always the same, but different times, different temperatures, different people, and different circumstances make this path new.
The path of life is also the same for everyone, but depending on how you walk it, it will become a new and different path.

Four years of rural life taught me the beauty of nature and its value in the present.

Life doesn't always go as you wish.
Naemyeon, Gangwon-do, located in the mountains 700 meters above sea level, where I was driven out of the city and ended up alone.
That is how the new path of returning to the countryside, found in the midst of despair, began.
However, during the four years I lived in the countryside, I had time to reflect on the convenience and comfort I had taken for granted.
In the winter, the heating doesn't work properly, so you have to wash your face with cold water, and it's hard to get what you need right away, let alone get it delivered. There's only one bus a day, and if something breaks down or goes wrong at home, you have to fix it yourself.
There are so many bugs that spiders are just friends.
But the night sky was full of stars, with a gentle green breeze, the sound of insects and the sound of a stream.
Countless days when the Milky Way filled my eyes.
Living in harmony with nature gives our weary souls breathing space and allows us to find leisure.

Escaping the intense and demanding life in the city and spending time in harmony with nature, I rediscovered a sense of leisure I had never felt before and many things I had overlooked in my busy life.
Living in the countryside, which taught me the beauty of nature and the value of the present rather than its inconveniences, became an opportunity for me to grow further.

Cheers to a life you love the most

Is there any time that is not wasted?
All 4,000 ceramic carnations made overnight over the course of six months were thrown away overnight.
Because the 4,001st piece of pottery I made was my favorite.
The more you cook, the tastier it gets. The more you make dumplings, the prettier they become. The more you draw, the better you become.
The more I made the porcelain carnations, the more beautiful they became.
It was never easy to throw away something that had been created with so much blood, sweat, and toil, but that time didn't disappear entirely.
Because I was able to achieve the result I liked the most.

Life is the same.
Just as I found the 4,001st ceramic carnation I liked, we too may have to face countless trials and setbacks to live the life we want.
Because of the trials and frustrations we have overcome, we can get one step closer to our goals and dreams.
There is never any time wasted.
Although it may only start from the 4,001st, it will be a powerful force from then on.
If we've worked our butts off and the results aren't satisfactory, leaving us feeling drained and discouraged, it might be because we haven't reached the 4,001st level yet.
If you challenge yourself to achieve your dreams and don't lose your motivation, you will definitely live the life you want.
