Into the book
I know it's absurd to say that you won't work hard in a world where everyone works hard.
I have no intention of insulting people who work hard.
I just want to give you a chance.
A chance to live differently… … .
Maybe it's a 40th birthday gift to myself? Honestly, I don't even know what the consequences of this choice will be.
This is my first time living a life without effort.
So, this is an experiment that I'm risking my life on.
Will this experiment succeed?
---From "A Resignation Letter Written Just Before Turning Forty"

I dropped out of school without telling my parents.
I lied about going to school and started preparing for the entrance exam again.
It was the 4th move.
There was no place to retreat anymore.
Going there was my only hope, there was no other way.
Ah, that student who had to repeat the college entrance exam seven times because of Hongdae disease.
It wasn't a lie.
It turns out that someone like me is one of those college entrance exam takers.
I wondered if it was worth spending seven years just for a university's reputation, but at the time, I thought it could be done.
It was clear that something was caught in his eye.
Time passed, winter came again, and I took the Hongik University entrance exam.
And that year, I passed the Hongik University entrance exam in just four attempts.
If you read this story as a success story about not giving up and challenging yourself to achieve your dreams, you are very much mistaken.
This is a story that shows how a false goal, the belief that there is only one way, can destroy a person.

---From "There is not just one road"

Wise giving up takes courage.
The courage to admit failure.
The courage to let go even if the effort and time have not borne any fruit.
The courage to try something new again even after failure.
Wise giving up is different from the resignation that comes when you have no choice but to hold on until the end or the weak will to just give up when things get difficult.
It's about having the courage to quit when you still have more time to go.
Why? Because it's profitable to do so.
Life also requires cutting losses.
If you miss the timing, what should have been a small loss can turn into a big loss.
It is not the case that just blindly enduring and trying hard is the solution.
It seems like we need courage more than effort right now.
The courage to take on challenges recklessly, and the courage to know when to give up.

---From "The Art of Giving Up"

Because I want to do well, because I don't want to be wrong.
It takes strength to have this kind of mind.
Being tense means being stiff, inflexible, unnatural, greedy, and scared.
I've never seen anything that required effort turn out well.
Painting, singing, exercise, maybe even life.
Could it be that my life has become so crooked because I've been putting in so much effort? Isn't it true that effort is exhausting?
---From "Drawing Without Force"

I've always been concerned about what other people think, and I've always tried to live a life that looks good to them.
It didn't go well, though.
In fact, if possible, I wanted to live according to the 'Life Manual'.
But that's not really easy.
What I should be truly ashamed of at this age is not that I don't have things appropriate for my age, but that I have lived without having my own values or direction.
Everything I desired and pursued was pointed out to me by others.
These were things that looked good to others.
That's embarrassing.
I am a person who chased after something hard but was unable to keep up and fell down.
Since I'm already here, I think it would be good to take a break and find my own path.
From now on, it's my way.

---From "My Way"

Do we really have to live at the same pace as everyone else? People say they don't want to live the same way, yet why do they strive to keep up and feel anxious when they fall behind? And even if they do fall behind, is it really that big of a deal? Everyone has their own pace.
If you lose your own pace and try to keep up with others, you will suffer.
Just by walking slowly and differently from others, you can live a completely different life from others.
It's individuality.
Ooh, unique!
---From "The Resolution to Live at My Own Pace"

Now, my life of working hard is over.
I have lived a life of endurance.
Life from now on should not be a life of enduring for the sake of results.
The process itself is fun.
That's what makes life fun.
I decided to think that way from now on.
You should have a good time, not a time you want to skip over.
The fun that I had forgotten about suddenly comes back to life.
Was this really this fun? The impatience to finish quickly has vanished, and now I'm the one who wishes the once tedious sewing could continue a little longer.
Nothing is finished yet, but this much is certain.
I'm really enjoying it right now.
Phew, I almost lived too hard.
---From "Because the process is also life"

Publisher's Review
Not a God-born (God+生) who only pursues the achievement of goals
The Bible for Get-Saeng (Get+生) who even has the luxury of life

“Why do I become more anxious the harder I work?”
I almost lived hard!
You, who have been running forward without looking back, have now decided to live at your own pace.

As we navigate the COVID-19 era, where survival and livelihood are threatened, the self-development keyword "God-saeng" has emerged as a hot topic.
The effort to prepare for an uncertain future through routine and planned daily life has become a social phenomenon.
However, as people feel tired of the 'gotsaeng' craze that has continued for the past few years, an increasing number of people are pursuing a new lifestyle called 'getsaeng'.
Getsaeng refers to an active lifestyle that pursues harmony in life by working efficiently, resting leisurely, and recharging.
For those who are tired of completing a tight daily schedule like homework, GetSaeng is becoming a new alternative.

Even if you set big and small goals and live each day according to a plan, the anxiety about the future does not go away.
Why do we become more anxious even when we live so diligently, or rather, the harder we live? The author of this book, who once prides himself on having lived more diligently than anyone else, confesses in the book:

'I was always dissatisfied and felt wronged because I worked so hard but my life was like this.
My goals, the life I wanted, seemed so far away and would never be reached.
So I was unhappy.
That's how I decided to live 180 degrees differently.
You don't have to work hard, you don't have to run, you don't have to do it if you don't want to, it's okay if you don't achieve your goals, that's it.
I started this because I wanted to live differently, but I wasn't sure about it.
Honestly, I thought my life would be ruined if I lived like that.
But on the contrary, life started to go well.
Only then did luck begin to come to me.

Slowing down gives you more room to maneuver.
As I gained more free time, my life, which had always felt inadequate and unsatisfactory, began to look different.
I thought there was nothing enjoyable or happy about my life, but there was already joy and happiness there.
I just hadn't seen it before.
By not keeping up with others, I stopped comparing myself to them and realized that my life wasn't so bad after all.
My life was full of small pleasures.
The joy of that time moved me.
It made me willingly deviate from my goals and set path and take a different path.
The result of that movement is this book.
This is the luck that came to me.
I now feel like I'm a lucky person.'

Ha Wan, who became a bestselling author with his first book, has been publishing for six years...
What changes have occurred in the meantime?
A preview of some of the special Q&A included to commemorate the revised edition.

Q.
In 2018, I decided not to live diligently and wrote a book, which became a bestseller.
As the book says, did the good results come about because I enjoyed the process?

A: That can't be possible.
Just as putting in effort doesn't necessarily lead to good results, enjoying the process doesn't necessarily lead to good results.
Even if you enjoy the process, the results may not be good, and even if it was really painful, the results may be good.
Actually, I don't know why it became a bestseller.
However, I know that this kind of success requires luck.
In that sense, I was lucky.
When I wrote this book, I never imagined or expected that it would become a bestseller.
Maybe that's why I was able to do it with such a happy heart.
Because things that you do with the hope of a certain result can't always be enjoyable.
(omitted)

Q.
Did becoming a bestseller give you financial freedom?

A: I also thought I could make a living if my book became a bestseller, but I realized that it wouldn't be possible unless it sold a lot.
If it were a million-seller, it might be a different story, but I don't know because it didn't happen.
Still, it is true that this book brought in a lot of money.
Thanks to this, the one-year experiment was extended to six years.
I haven't had to worry about money much for the past six years, so I can say that I've enjoyed some temporary financial freedom.
Ah, those were the good old days.
But the good times are gone.
After six years of just playing around, almost all of that money disappeared.
I guess I should stop playing around now.

Q.
What is the biggest impact your book's success has had on your life?

A: I guess it's because I've come to believe in myself a little more.
Like everyone else, I had some self-doubt.
Is it really okay to live like this? If I keep going like this, won't I be the only one left behind?
I feel like the success of the book has given me the confidence that it's okay to live at my own pace and in my own way.
Readers say they found comfort in this book, but I feel like I've been receiving the world's comfort and encouragement, saying, "You're doing well."
I will not forget gratitude and will continue to live well in the future.
