Book Introduction
“The good news is that I’ve now reached a point where I enjoy being a patient.”

Yang Yu-jin, a creator who gained 1 million followers through "Bread Eater Saljjinddeok," confesses for the first time that she is battling the incurable disease lupus.
A cheerful and sincere cheer for you, delivered with sincerity.

Could facing someone's long-standing pain be so bright and joyful? This is the story of Yang Yu-jin, a creator known as "Bbangmeokdasaljjintteok," who seemed to have grown up bright and cheerful, and her first confession of illness.
The author, who has brought warm laughter to countless people through his TikTok and YouTube channel 'Bbangmeokdasaljjinddeok', confesses in this book that he has been struggling with the incurable disease 'lupus' (a chronic autoimmune disease), which he has kept hidden in his heart until now.
The video, which was filmed alone in a small room, reached many people and gained over a million subscribers. He carefully wrote about the pain of the past that he could not talk about in a book.

The author, who has lived with an incurable disease for 10 years, was inspired to write this book by the warm and affectionate love of those who have helped him get back on his feet at every crossroads of life and death.
The author mustered up the courage to write for those who showed up in various places in his life and taught him the direction and attitude toward life, and to give back to someone the support he received.
Fearing that the sudden, serious talk would create an awkward atmosphere, and fearing that it would seem like she was publishing a book because she had become popular, Yang Yu-jin, known as 'Bbangtteok', stayed up all night erasing and erasing the letters, pressing down on each letter to express her true feelings.

In these heartfelt stories, countless people who have delicately taken root within the author's inner self are vividly recorded.
He learns a strong attitude toward life from the 'gangster grandmother' he encounters while hospitalized in a high-rise cancer ward, and gets hints for his worries from the neighborhood grandfather he meets while traveling.
This book simply and honestly tells you that what gives you the strength to live are people, the dreams you create with them, and the laughter you share with them through those dreams.
In that sense, this book is not only a confession of my pain, but also a record of the countless faces that have kept me alive.

Into the book
This dear friend of mine, Lupus, has hit me at every important moment in my life.
He grabbed my ankle and handed me the result of failure.
It was impossible to overcome the illness as effortlessly as I had when I first discovered it.
But my cheerful, slightly eccentric, positive personality brought me here.
Change your mindset and think positively.
When something really big happens, I decide to think about it a little more carefully.

--- p.22 From “Life gave me a banana too early”

Besides the fact that I am a sick person, there are still many things I do not want to accept.
There are parts I haven't looked into, and there are parts I know about but try to ignore.
To people, I just seem like a cool and easygoing girl, but in reality, I still have a lot of shortcomings.
Still, I will continue to strive not to hurt those around me, and to become a role model for others, helping them live powerful lives.
--- p.47 From “The Patient Within Me Whom I Completely Accept”

Because I realized what I needed to do from what I saw, heard, and felt in a room in the cancer ward.
It is about looking into the lives of many people living in this world, empathizing with them, and helping them live a little more comfortably or a little better.
Just as everyone has their own shape, I also learned that I have my own slightly special shape, and that there is no need to take it negatively.
If the day ever comes when I meet my gangster grandmother again, I want to help her in her own way.

--- p.57 From "The Gangster Grandmother in the High-Rise Hospital Room"

Their story was too heavy for me, still a middle school student, to digest.
At first, I tried not to pay attention because it felt like I was eavesdropping, but every word hit me so loudly that I eventually found myself completely paying attention.
Every day, I waited for my seniors' legendary life stories to begin.
Behind the curtains of my bed, where I openly expressed, "I'm an introvert," I quietly cried, laughed, learned, felt, and realized things while listening to the stories of my seniors.
--- p.80 From “Even if it’s a dream to teach my children how to twerk”

I noticed other people around me with lupus like me.
They looked just as tired as I was.
One person my age, who was just sighing without focus, caught my eye, and I remembered why I decided to become an actor.
Just as I was comforted and helped myself by watching many works when I was going through a hard time, I wanted to do the same.
It started with the desire to comfort weary people with my cheerfulness.
--- p.88 From “A Small and Precious Beginner’s Mindset for Actors”

Even though I have found a lot of free time, when I get sick, I face my limitations and sometimes fall into despair.
However, what allows us to overcome this is to constantly remind ourselves of the reason why we want to achieve our dreams.
If I always keep my heart clear to make people who are sick, struggling, or in need of comfort smile, like me, I can start again quickly.
This dream, which can make people happy like children in an instant and then make them miserable, is truly desirable and attractive.

Publisher's Review
"A kind friend named Lupus has impacted me at every important moment in my life."
Yang Yu-jin's courageous and cheerful story of overcoming the crossroads of life and death

Although she might have had a more serious expression, the author of this book, Yang Yu-jin, known as “Bread Eater and Fat Rice Cake,” opens up frankly, sharing the story of her long-held struggle with illness.
He said that when he was suddenly diagnosed with an incurable disease in his third year of middle school, he thought, “I’ll live every day as if it were my last.”
Lupus, a dangerous and incurable disease in which the immune system that should protect me attacks me instead, causing an inflammatory response throughout the body, fortunately has a survival rate of over 90%, but it is a disease in which dangerous symptoms suddenly appear.
Repeated worsening and relief, sudden symptoms such as jaundice and rash bring daily life to a halt.
It is dangerous even for minor bleeding due to thrombocytopenia, and can also lead to rheumatoid arthritis and photosensitivity syndrome.

Even though he has suffered from symptoms that threaten his daily life and has been hospitalized at a critical age, where he was on the verge of death, the author speaks with a calm and playful expression.
Lupus was like a kind friend to me.
How could an incurable disease that completely shattered my daily life be considered a "friendly friend"? During what should have been the prime of my youth, I spent weeks in a hospital room, confined to my room, unable to go out, and it couldn't have been easy to endure.
The author sometimes jokes that it was thanks to his “cheerful and positive personality,” which anyone who watches the YouTube video “Bread Eats Fat” will know, but this book is full of honest stories about how he positively overcame his life-or-death struggle with illness.
What helped me endure my illness were the countless people who quietly taught me how to live.

While struggling with illness, the author felt and learned through his whole body the comfort and consideration of those he met, and the attitudes of those who lived strong despite suffering from illnesses much more serious than his own.
From her sensitive childhood, when “the heart of an adolescent girl who didn’t want to be hurt clashed with her mother’s love,” the author gradually began to realize the power of love and positivity.
During a time when one would have been preoccupied with one's own illness, the author learned life from others and digested it with clarity, gradually overcoming his illness.
This book contains the records of my past struggles with illness, in which I learned from people and moved forward toward them.

Gangster Grandma in the High-Rise Cancer Ward
A strong and upright attitude toward life learned beyond the hospital curtains

The tough title of the book, 'Gangster Grandma in the High-Rise Hospital Room', encapsulates the courageous life lessons learned from others.
The author secretly remembers an old woman he met in his first year of college, who had emergency surgery for sudden abdominal bleeding and woke up in the cancer ward for high-risk patients, as the "gangster old woman."
Among the patients in the cancer ward, the 'gangster grandmother', who had the most symptoms, was a person who "looked shabby at first glance, but somehow had a sense of strength," and was stronger than anyone else.
“I tried hard to refuse help because I was afraid of being a bother to people,” “I considered people around me to be my own even when they were mean to me,” and “I endured pain and suffering silently.”
Perhaps the meaning behind the crude word 'gangster' is the attitude of enduring one's life 'coolly' with a burning will.

Meeting the 'gangster grandmother', who lives her life without any resentment or regret, simply finding meaning in the fact that she shared love, was an important opportunity for her to reflect on her own life.
The author, who “realized what I should do through what I saw, heard, and felt in a room in the cancer ward,” now looks into the individual lives of people around the world and pledges to help them live a little more comfortably.
Perhaps the 'gangster grandmother in the high-rise hospital room' that the author encountered embodies the author's cool and brave future as she lives with an incurable disease, while also embodying the very image of life itself, silently enduring her own life and supporting those around her.

"Dreams help us survive."
The dream of becoming an actor to make people laugh, nurtured in the hospital room

From the point where one reflects on the lives of others through the life learned from them, this book is both a story of a steadfast struggle with illness and a story of growth.
The fact that the author has continued to pursue his dream of becoming an actor, which he had even before becoming a creator, by appearing in web dramas such as “Youth Blossom” and “Hamburger Department Class of 23” is also not unrelated to the incurable disease he suffered from.
The dream of becoming an actor, which was first cherished in the middle school drama club after being praised for his "perverted acting," grew in a different way as he lay alone in a hospital bed, listening to the "legendary life stories" of his "painful seniors" for over six hours a day through the curtains.
The stories of the generous adults in the hospital room, who “seem to have given up on everything but still love life,” colorfully unfold the many emotions of life.
The author pledges to convey to people the comfort of memories and the joy of empathy through the art of acting, which captures the essence of life.

It was an opportunity for not only my seniors, but also my peers to nurture their dreams of becoming actors.
While waiting for treatment at the hospital, the author saw the tired faces of fellow lupus patients of the same age and wanted to offer them some comfort. After that, he overcame his illness and slowly moved towards his dream.
When I was sick and couldn't rehearse for a performance, and my hands were shaking from fear of starting something new, I remembered the words of my grandfather, whom I met by chance, "Forget about Jo Jin-geon."
The author, who sometimes experiences anxiety, takes out a piece of A4 paper and organizes his thoughts. What he realized was that even if it is a very small dream, you must cherish it and move forward to live a life without regrets.
Remembering the power of love I received and returning that power to others—perhaps this is why the author can move forward tirelessly, even without sleeping properly.
There is always a person at the end of that road.

A tough and affectionate love story drawn directly on a crimson cover
Dedicated to the days without answers, when I was in pain with my whole body and loved with my whole body

The reason why the YouTube video 'Bread Eater Saljjinddeok' was able to approach everyone in a bright and positive way without any resistance is because of the author's long-time concern about whether his video might hurt someone.
The author, who describes himself as “a very sensitive and emotional person,” has been more concerned than anyone else about ensuring that no one else suffers as much as he has, and that his cheerfulness is conveyed clearly.
Rather than focusing solely on my own pain, I am walking the path of reaching out to others through my pain as a creator and actor.

The new hobby of 'art', which he started because he had difficulty moving his aching body, was another outlet for the author's mind.
The author, who poured out his heart as if drawing a door to his heart on a white canvas, also drew the cover illustration for this book himself.
When you open the cover, painted with a tough crimson brush stroke as if it were a hot life force, you are immediately drawn into the author's heart, which he wrote with sincerity, one word at a time, through the night.

The book also contains his sincerity towards his family, which was only cheerfully depicted in the video, his sincerity towards his friends and pets who helped him get back on his feet, and his sincerity towards his fans.
The power of love and positivity that he nurtured with them was probably the driving force that 'unknowingly helped me overcome myself' during his long battle with illness.
The days when I was at a loss due to pain and had no answers have now become ‘days without answers’ where I can fill in my own answers.
The faces of the people depicted with a calm and courageous spirit are already vivid in the story.
