Book Introduction
A word from MD
Kim Gyul-wool's world saved by reading and writing
A collection of essays in which Kim Gyul-wool herself is the sole protagonist.
His world is fully captured as he walks his own path, enjoying life and art while immersing himself in books and music.
A book that prepares me for a new winter by following him and encountering sentences in this cold but quiet season.
November 17, 2023. Essay PD Lee Na-young
“This will be the first book I write solely as Kim Gyul-wool.”
"The Language of Winter," the first full-fledged prose collection that reveals the depths of one's inner self.

Highly recommended by poet Jin Eun-young!

A collection of essays by Kim Gyul-wool, author of six solo books and operator of the YouTube channel 'Gyulwool Bookstore', has been published.
This book is a collection of the author's flowing prose and new writing for the book that he has contributed to various media outlets over the years. Unlike his previous works, which have focused on piano, books, and YouTube, this book focuses solely on himself.
This book is a compilation of writings from many years, a winter's night that shows how one person's thoughts and passions become writing, words, content, music, poetry, and ultimately, bring one closer to oneself.

The author says this in the introduction to the book:
“This is the first book I write solely as Kim Gyul-wool.”
The author recalls his school days, when he searched for poetry among the harsh and painful language, his twenty years, when he endured a grueling part-time job while reading Jin Eun-young's poem "College Days" until he was worn out, and his winter days, when he desperately clung to books and writing, thinking that "reading and writing were the only way" to save himself, during "more than ten years of thinking about death without fail."
The story of what sustained us through the hardships of life takes us into the world of winter, a time when it is bitterly cold but perfect for facing ourselves in silence.
And to the person he met on the road, Kim Gyul's soft voice spoke like this.
They say a new winter has come.

Into the book
Work and love—wow, writing this makes me feel like I've really become an adult—I couldn't find satisfaction without pushing hard.
If others didn't give me work, I would do it myself, and I would give everything to others even if it meant giving up everything I had.
There were many times when I was betrayed by the things I believed in and the love I believed in, but I never regretted that decision.
Anyway, when I came back, I learned something.
For example, the lesson that you shouldn't blindly pour out your faith (and yet I ended up blindly pouring out my faith again).
No matter how many times the pendulum returns to its original position, if the pendulum itself is moving, it will always return to a new position.
Just as the Earth orbits the sun, each year begins in a different place due to the movement of the solar system.
So I still push hard and fall hard every time.
I am a pendulum that moves without any regrets.

---From "1991"

Until I chose philosophy as a double major in college, I always hovered around the periphery of philosophy.
Even while I was making music and writing, I always thought that I would study philosophy more someday.
It was the thought of dedicating myself to something bigger than my life, and thus finding a place to crouch in the midst of that vast sanctuary of thought.
The process of reading, thinking, researching, and writing philosophical texts was so ecstatic that I was willing to give up other possibilities in life for a while, and the call of philosophy felt like an echo in my head that I couldn't shake no matter what I did.
---From "Somehow Graduate School"

I hope to live in a world where people truly listen.
A world of people who pause for judgment, a world of people who don't try to impose their own rewards on others, a world of people who acknowledge complexity.
I want to hear the long-winded words of these people who don't just disappear after hearing a three-line summary.
I want to witness the precious moments where each and every person's story is not commodified.
Of course, in a capitalist society, time is money, so we must acknowledge the existence of classic digests, 'plots with endings', and 'choruses'.
But in a world where it's rare to hear even a friend talk for more than three hours, if there are any ways to avoid being mere cogs in the machine, one of them is undoubtedly the experience of art.
---From "The World of Ideal Listening"

I closed my eyes, turned on my favorite YouTube channel, and thought about what I was going to put in my yogurt for breakfast tomorrow, when suddenly I felt an unbelievable happiness.
That you can think about tomorrow morning's yogurt instead of crying and self-harming, waking up to auditory hallucinations, tossing and turning in the wee hours of the morning unable to fall back asleep, or praying that tomorrow will never come, but lying still and waiting for sleep that won't come.
It was after enduring a long period of time that seemed like eternity that this day finally came.
I wish I could have told you this.
But I know today that this day has come because I didn't stop crying without knowing it.
---From "People Who Know a Little About Life"

After graduation, I became a YouTuber who introduces books, as you know.
On YouTube, I introduce books on literature, science, and humanities.
I introduce books on YouTube and give YouTube lectures to publishers.
Perhaps it was this experience of confusion that allowed me to avoid being trapped in the respective boundaries of books and YouTube.
I previously wrote this in the author's introduction to the book:
“A person who stands between YouTube and books, between writing and music, between science and the humanities, and rejoices in the vastness of the world.” I am so glad that this world is so vast, that seemingly disparate areas are in fact deeply connected, and that it all comes down to humanity.
---From "Memories of Confusion"

So to speak, in some parts of life I find myself a little bit funny.
Even if the rest of it is boring, that can't be helped.
When you're over 30, you can't suddenly go to a fun camp and get fun training. You just have to try to become a more playful and easygoing person for the next few decades.
Even though I may not be the most funny person among my friends, I can still make them laugh a lot, and among friends who appreciate that, I can become someone who smiles a little brighter.
If I smile brightly, my friend will smile brightly too. What can I do?
---From "Boring People"

I know how precious what I know about Shin-ae is.
It is also a record of my life that can never be erased.
The way we change will also remain like that.
Now we talk about how to reduce meat and disposable items.
Talk about how to overcome gender discrimination.
We support each other's work and envision life at the age of forty.
Around that time, he said he definitely wanted to live nearby.
Our lives will continue like this, supporting each other and being proud of each other.
Sometimes I think that just living like this is life.
I have a feeling that if I live diligently with such a dependable friend, envisioning 10 years from now, and then another 10 years from now, my life will naturally end beautifully.
---From "Our Days"

Publisher's Review
Drawn with intimate thoughts and deep affection
The beautiful and transparent world of winter

Kim Gyul-wool is constantly expanding her horizons as a YouTuber, writer, DJ, and now, as a philosophy graduate student.
He has consistently published six solo books and has been listed as a co-author several times, but his latest book, “The Language of Winter,” is special.
In the preface, the author announces that this is “the first book I write solely as Kim Gyul,” and that it is the first book in which he confesses his true inner self.

This book contains some of my writings from 2016 to 2023.
The author's writings, which span eight years, were collected to over 1,500 pages of 200-character manuscript paper.
Among them, we collected articles that focus on the author's own story, excluding reviews of specific works or articles with strong timeliness.
He always invites us to Gyulwool Bookstore with a calm voice, but through the difficult times he has gone through, we see why Gyulwool Kim became a reader and writer.

Ah, it was in the winter of my twenty-fifth year that I discovered that poetry can flow out of itself.
Even while I was working diligently at my part-time job, words flowed out like a dream.
It was the same as the breath I exhaled on a winter morning.
(……) After writing down the words that came to me and letting them flow away, I was able to swallow this time a little more.
That's when I realized.
Poetry was a physical sensation, an undeniable declaration, a wave that penetrated both the reader and the writer.
(Page 28)

Kim Gyul-wool, a dedicated author who started her YouTube channel in 2017 and has been publishing her first book every year, writes poetry and conceives novels in her spare time, constantly bringing herself to the text.
And now the author says he is “very happy” having decided to abandon his planned “good life” and study philosophy.
The world of winter is a world of ever-expanding thought and language.
Seeing the consistent and subjective trajectory of one person's life is in itself encouraging to the reader.

“There was no other way than reading and writing.”
The love of reading and writing consistently

『The Language of Winter』 contains the reading and writing life that made Kim Gyul who she is today.
During her high school days, when she could barely breathe in the language of poetry amidst the sharp and painful words that pierced her head, during her days of working tiresome part-time jobs while wearing out Jin Eun-young's poem "College Days," there was a time when Kim Gyul endured the hardships of life with books and music.

If we want to achieve anything through art, we have to put in the time.
It takes patience to read the introduction to the book and two hours of sitting motionless in front of the screen.
So you have to let the awkwardness, the nervousness, the magical attraction, and the sudden sadness pass through your body.
If we don't put anything out there, the work won't put anything out there either.
(Page 50)

Kim Gyul-wool is a person who gives a lot to his work.
A person who walks slowly through an art gallery, listens intently to a person's consistent and intimate story for a long time, and quietly listens to a 40-minute piano concerto.
In the process, he naturally developed his own unique way of enjoying art.
The author reveals the journey of enjoyment that he has built up step by step.
As we read that journey, we ultimately realize that “the experience of art is precisely the experience of life.”

I hope to live in a world where people truly listen.
A world of people who pause for judgment, a world of people who don't try to impose their own rewards on others, a world of people who acknowledge complexity.
I want to hear the long-winded words of these people who don't just disappear after hearing a three-line summary.
But in a world where it's rare to hear even a friend talk for more than three hours, if there are any ways to avoid being mere cogs in the machine, one of them is undoubtedly the experience of art.
(Page 51)

“I am a pendulum that moves without any regrets.”
Kim Gyul-woo's beautiful and strong sentences

In this book, we can glimpse the author's increasingly profound writing as he begins his graduate studies in earnest and takes a step closer to the realm of philosophy.
His writing, which sometimes reads like a piece of prose poetry, also distances itself from the inertial reading style.
These are not warm comforts, but rather passionate writings that cause unfamiliar questions to well up within me; writings that do not provide answers, but leave a lingering feeling that allows me to wander with peace of mind; writings that resemble the books Kim Gyul devours, “writings that reorganize old perspectives, thoughts, and senses.”

"The Language of Winter" is a book that contains the author, Kim Gyul-wool, as well as the season of winter.
It is a cold but quiet season, a season that allows for deep thought. Kim Gyul tells those who seem to be crouching but are flying powerfully inside like migratory birds.
That exploring ourselves, reading and writing can bring us to a safe place.
Another new winter has come.
Just as winter comes every year and we greet it with a smile even when the harsh wind blows, may your winter be filled with language that resembles you.

“Winter is a season that must pass for everyone, no matter where, but for those who call out for winter, its harshness is a wind that can sweep them away.
“I think about standing upright in place and facing the strong wind, and yet, if this is life, I think there is no reason not to sing.” (p. 6)
