Strength and Rest
Description
Book Introduction
Seven years after "Anne of Green Gables"
Baek Young-ok's book on life philosophy
How to apply and remove force

From the novel "Style" to the essay "What Anne of Green Gables Says," beloved author Baek Young-ok presents her first humanities book, "Strength and Rest."
This book contains the author's thoughts on literature, psychology, sociology, and self-development over the past 17 years since his debut in 2006.
It contains a life philosophy that makes life flexible, from how to move forward to how to rest without guilt.

As newborns, we struggle to hold up our necks, clench our fists, and roll over.
As we grow older, we learn to slow down, put down what we are holding in our hands, and appreciate the value of leisure.
He looks back on our lives step by step and says, “If you don’t have brakes to stop when you want to stop, top speed is meaningless,” and suggests that we stop at an appropriate line and live an appropriate life.

Think back to when you were winding a mechanical watch made by a craftsman.
Mechanical watches need to be wound a few times a day, but if you wind them more than that, the mainspring or core will break.
If you don't wind it at regular intervals, it won't work, but if you wind it properly, it will turn without error.
The clock of life runs smoothly when strength and rest are appropriately balanced.
In this book, he transforms a complex and heavy life into a simple and light one using the operating methods of 'giving strength' and 'relieving strength'.
It gives us, who cannot be reborn, the power to live anew.

Into the book
Even for the same flower, the speed at which it blooms varies depending on the season.
Even azaleas and rhododendrons, which look similar, bloom and fall in different orders.
What we need to learn at this time is patience.
The reason why seniors are enthusiastic about flower photos is not just because the flowers are pretty, but because they realize that such beautiful flowers 'wither early.'
What is needed at this time is perception.
A bonfire or candle that illuminates the darkness does not disappear or diminish when shared with someone.
What we need to learn at this time is cooperation and empathy.
We say how precious human beings are, but there is something we don't really realize.
Regardless of whether we were born with a silver spoon or a dirt spoon, we are all flowers.

---From "Prologue: To us who are not happy but wish to be happy"

My weight is the result of my eating habits over time.
Promotion is the result of my accumulated work habits.
Assets are the result of my accumulated financial habits.
How many people will answer my phone in an emergency?
It's the sum total of my interpersonal habits.
Good habits ultimately lead to a good life.

---「Part 1.
From "Habits: What You Can and Can't Change"

The essence of time management is not 'what to do',
The first thing to decide is ‘what not to do.’
The plan to do everything is the worst plan of all.

---「Part 4.
Emptiness: The desire to fill, the determination to let go

The gift we receive only when we listen is 'hearing'.
Through the occasional breathing sounds, dry tones, low tones, and moist sighs, one can hear someone's pain, loneliness, and despair.
A person who has been exposed to hearing reads between the lines in the trivial actions of living things.
The magic of hearing what was previously unheard ultimately comes from the desire to hear.
I was just listening to my friend, but at the end of the conversation he said, “Thanks for the advice today.
Have you ever heard someone say, “That really helped me out!”
Even though I didn't say a word, I just looked into my friend's eyes, nodded, and held his hand when he cried.
---「Part 5.
Listening: Be prepared to listen rather than speak

If you don't clean, dust will accumulate.
The mind is like that too.
Without conscious effort, worry, anxiety, sadness, and anger accumulate like dust.
This is the law of entropy.

---「Part 9.
Satisfaction: A Moderate Line, A Moderate Life

The scariest thing is the constant self-exploitation.
If you internalize self-exploitation,
Self-destruction proceeds in automatic mode.
When you are at the peak of your professional career,
Paradoxically, what we need to remember is self-care.
---「Part 10.
From "Work: Self-Exploitation and Self-Care"

What does it mean to say that winning is not the same as losing?
Not supporting is a kind of attitude.
It is an unbreakable spirit, a determination of someone who accepts the imperfections of life and knows that the possibility of failure always lurks.
It is not an optimism that only a flowery path will be walked, but a hope that even if you are afraid and trembling, you will walk a rocky path.
---「Part 12.
Growth: The past changes, remember the future, live in the present

Publisher's Review
How do you do it
How do you live by letting go?
Author Baek Young-ok's first humanities essay

What do we need, those of us who are unhappy but long to be? Is there a way to rest and work efficiently without guilt? How can we revive a life plagued by chronic fatigue and sustained by nutritional supplements? "We've lived so strenuously that we've completely forgotten how to relax." (p. 14) Those who breathe and live need both effort and relaxation.

From a copywriter who wrote one-page copy, to an online bookstore MD who wrote eight-page book reviews, to a fashion magazine reporter who wrote 30-page interview articles, to a writer who has been writing for 17 years.
Author Baek Young-ok worked several jobs like a jet-lagged fund manager.
I ran forward, looking straight ahead, reading books every day until my eyes hurt.
I've always thought about slowing down while running at high speeds, and I've wanted to write "Strength and Rest" for a long time.

When he started writing this book, he had the title "The Power to Live as Me" in mind, but while writing the book, he decided that he should talk about "rest" along with "strength."
As I watched my young nephew, who was born with his fists clenched and slowly unclenched them, and as I thought of my mother-in-law, who gradually let go of her worries about her children as she overcame cancer, I realized that letting go of strength is just as important as exerting it.

“We are born giving strength, and we die giving strength.
And we live most of our lives giving and taking power.
The important thing is when to apply force and when to release it.
If we imagine our lives as a giant wave, there are parts where we need to exert our strength and swing our arms.
To move forward.
But where the rapids are rushing in, you have to relax for a moment and let the flow take over.
So as not to capsize like a shipwreck.
“Life is like this endless repetition of strength and rest.” (pp. 12-13)

Patience, focus, empathy, endurance, imagination… …
A story about regaining daily life
Twelve keywords that will change your life flexibly.

"Strength and Rest" is a book on life philosophy that is quite different from the books Baek Young-ok has written so far.
This book, which combines the profound word "philosophy" with the light-hearted word "life," deals with ways to cultivate life skills, such as how to work appropriately, how to speak accurately, how to listen carefully, and how to choose and give up.
It contains the concerns of a person who tries to make living enjoyable by changing his or her thoughts.

The book, divided into 12 parts, delves deeply into twelve themes that we might have thought about when we want to exert ourselves and let go, from “Habits: What Can Be Changed and What Cannot Be Changed” to “Slowness: When You’re Running Too Fast and Looking at It Slowly”, “Emotions: Misunderstanding Ambiguous Language, Understanding Accurate Language”, “Emptiness: The Desire to Fill, the Resolution to Let Go”, “Listening: Being Ready to Listen Rather than Being Ready to Speak”, “Rest: The Liberation of Resting Well Without Guilt”, “Self: Drawing the Line Between Me and What Is Not Me”, “Imagination: From the Visible to the Invisible”, “Satisfaction: The Moderate Line, the Moderate Life”, “Work: Self-Exploitation and Self-Care”, “Empathy: Being Destroyed by Malice or Softened by Good Intentions”, and “Growth: The Past Changes, Remember the Future, Live in the Present”.

If you don't know what you want to do, "you need to figure out what you don't like to do, not what you like, and then eliminate it" (p. 137).
It's not perfection that moves the heart, it's imperfection.
Rather than trying to be recognized by others, “look at what is not me and move towards what is me” (p. 143).
As we follow his words that say that just as a tree that bears a lot of fruit this year will bear less fruit the following year, we need the wisdom to “stop to run faster, and empty to fill more” (p. 15), our perspective on life expands.

From self-exploitation to self-care
Without disqualifying our past
Inspiring our tomorrow with pleasant imagination

People still find solace in books.
Even though I nod my head at the words that it's okay and that I can do it, there are times when these words feel as unsettling as an open bottle of cola.
While I agree that thinking this way can change your life and that struggling this way can lead to financial freedom, I often find myself asking this question.
That person is living so well, but why am I living like this? Then, the moment my body breaks down, I suddenly realize it.
“The moment we put on the patient gown, we all become equally miserable and weak, no matter what that person’s business card was” (p. 212).

The human heart sends out signals to the body when it reaches its maximum heart rate or when it drops below its minimum heart rate.
Only those who know when to run and when to stop can carry on with their daily lives.
Ultimately, life is a journey of balancing enough and too much.
If you've lived to the fullest, it's good to rest to your heart's content.
If you find yourself piling up a lot of stuff in your home or accumulating countless files on your computer, it might be a good idea to resolve to live a more decluttered life.

“If you were asked to name just one thing that is important for creating a good life, what would it be?
I would say it bluntly, 'habit'.
As the author says, “It is no exaggeration to say that 70% of my life after becoming a writer was dedicated to developing good habits” (p. 32), the important thing is to create a lifestyle pattern that allows you to run when you want to run and stop when you want to stop.
It's difficult to change your innate nature, but fortunately, you can change and develop habits.

Just before finishing this book, he said:
“I hadn’t wanted to write a book for a while, but writing this book gave me the strength to write again.” Just as the author found strength while writing this book, I hope that the readers will also find strength while reading this book.
If you want to embrace the past, live faithfully today, and leap forward toward tomorrow, if you want to live a life of love rather than a life of hunting, I dare to recommend you open this book.
