The illustrated essay "Be Sad Enough," which quickly became a word-of-mouth hit through crowdfunding and received rave reviews from independent publishers, has been officially published in full color.
This book, which offers the courage and hope to overcome grief and move forward little by little, depicts the world after a sudden loss.
Losing the being that supported your life in the name of love is like experiencing the ground you were standing on crumbling away in an instant.
My usual self disappears, and as I chew on my wounds with self-reproach and regret, my daily life slowly becomes a ruin.
Unless that person comes back, you can never get your old life back.
But this picture essay is not about the person who left, but about someone who decided to grieve enough to live their life fully again.
The author meticulously unfolds the process of overcoming the immense grief brought on by an unprepared breakup, slowly building the strength to return to normal life, and finally standing on one's own two feet.
The story is driven by a calm and restrained writing style and cute illustrations, so at some point you find yourself immersed in the book.
Then, suddenly, it makes me think about who is important in my life right now.

"Be Sad Enough" is a book filled with deep empathy and warm comfort from someone who has experienced it firsthand, for those of us who live with unexpressed sadness buried deep in our hearts.
How does our lives change when we lose that one, unique "significant other"? Regardless of the type of loss, if we don't take the time to grieve adequately, it becomes difficult to move on.
This is why we shouldn't rush things by telling someone who hasn't had time to reflect on the wounds in their heart to just forget about it or that things will get better as they get busy.
The author says it took him 10 years to publish this book, a collection of illustrated essays filled with intimate stories he couldn't easily share with just anyone.
This book, written without avoiding or denying reality, but rather by clearly facing the pain of loss and based on thoughts ripened at the end of mourning, leaves a profound impression with its determination to "grieve enough and then live again."

This book will soothe the hearts of readers who want to rediscover the significance of the precious people by their side, readers who had to endure a separation they never imagined and were left helpless in pain, readers who miss loved ones who have passed away, readers who seek ways to comfort them, and all those who need sufficient time to grieve.

Into the book
When I was young, I was swimming in the water.
I remember being so flustered for a moment that I was floundering in the water.

Luckily, my mother, who was following behind, immediately rescued me.

My mom always watches over me from behind.

So, even though I was a little awkward, I was able to move forward confidently.
Looking back, I felt secure because I had my mom.
But then one day, my mother suddenly disappeared from my world.

When I looked back, I couldn't see my mom anymore.
Now I feel like there's nowhere to go back to.

I'm just going with the flow right now.
---From the "Prologue"

Publisher's Review
Facing the pain of loss
A record of a heart that has gradually become stronger

“In the face of any love, we have a duty to be happy.

So that that love won't be in vain.

This is a story about loss and mourning
It is also a story about courage and happiness.

You will be sad enough.
And then we will live again.

“Because this life is also a proof of the love left behind by the person who has now left.”
― From author Kim Shin-ji’s recommendation

One day, my mother suddenly disappeared from this world.
From that day on, time stopped.
It was a life that just flowed by, drifting in sadness.
My mother taught me many things I needed to know about life, like how to love myself and others and how to enjoy life, but she didn't teach me how to face grief.
The death of a loved one was something I had never experienced before, so I wandered for a long time, not knowing how to bear the weight, how long I could grieve, or how I should live the rest of my life.
I believed the people around me who said that things would get better if I just kept busy, so I spent some time mindlessly.
However, the emotions that were suppressed with great effort would sometimes burst out and turn daily life upside down again.

Then suddenly, it occurred to me that I should record this entire process before it was too late.
I encouraged myself by writing and drawing about all the small, happy, and painful moments.
Meanwhile, the sadness gradually subsided and I was able to cherish the beautiful memories of the past.
And I gained the strength to move forward little by little on my own.
As it took me a long time to get back on my feet, I wanted to share with someone the answers I gained through trial and error, which I endured with all my might.
I wanted to tell people that it's okay to live my life fully, not just for the sake of the person who left.
The picture essay, “Grieving Enough,” was born from a long mourning period of ten years.

“Let’s go eat something delicious!”
“Do you want to go out for a bit and get some fresh air?”
“If you scream loudly, you feel better.”
“I’ll try harder starting tomorrow.”
Things my mom used to say to me on days when I looked down.

So I decided to love myself the way you loved me.

― From the text

We live our lives constantly meeting and seeing off people.
If there is a meeting, there is bound to be a parting.
Acknowledging the various natural grief reactions and learning to manage the grief of loss are key to healing and growth for living a healthy life.
This book shows us, who live with unexpressed sorrow buried deep in our hearts, how our hearts gradually become stronger as we face our wounds and continue to grieve in stages.
Memories of being loved become a shield that protects me even in moments of despair, and the comforting words my mother, who was a psychologist, gave me while she was alive become a light that illuminates my path whenever I face difficulties while living alone.
This book also contains a variety of practical methods that have helped me recover from my daily life, such as expressing my sadness by pouring out my emotions, making a list of things I like to feel alive, and discovering small joys that fill the emptiness in my heart.

“When you’re sad, be sad. When you want to cry, cry.”
A moving illustrated essay by an author discovered by independent publisher readers.

"Be Sad Enough" was the author's first self-published book through crowdfunding.
Despite being a story about the grief of losing a loved one, the campaign was a huge success, exceeding its goal by 600%.
Readers who were moved by the sad and poignant episodes that ultimately left a lasting impression and emotion poured out rave reviews, and word of mouth quickly spread, leading to the book being officially published by a publisher.
Unlike the independent publication printed in black and white, it has been newly edited into a full-color version to enhance the quality of the manuscript and illustrations.

"Grieving Enough" is a book filled with the author's warm wish to overcome grief and become a source of strength for those facing similar grief.
The message this book resonates with readers is that no matter what loss you have experienced, you must protect and love yourself, and never forget that this moment will never return.
If you've never had anyone or a place to share your sorrows, reading this book will allow you to honestly confront the emotions buried deep within your heart and take the time to take care of yourself.
Or, if there's someone around you who's facing the pain of loss, instead of seeking clumsy words of comfort, why not quietly hand them a copy of this book, written in the language of deep empathy?
Because what we need most in the face of a sudden breakup is time to grieve.

Reviews from readers who have read this book before

- As soon as I got home, I opened the package and read the book before I even changed into my school uniform.
I've had a habit of crying silently since I was little, but I found myself crying out loud with complete ease while reading a book.
There were many parts that I could relate to.
It will take quite a while, but I think that if you grieve enough, things will get better eventually.

- A cute picture and an expression of pain that is so relatable.
It's a comfort to my heart after seeing my younger brother off on such a bad note.
Every time I see her, I promise myself that I will be good to my mom.
