The Munhakdongne World Literature Collection presents a 21st-century canon, selecting not only great classics whose value has been consistently recognized, but also contemporary works that have inspired important political and cultural practices of the present age.
By placing works that have left important marks on the history of modern literature, such as Slaughterhouse-Five, The Row of Dark Shops, Midnight's Children, Beloved, An American Pastoral, The Goat Festival, and Dear Life, alongside works that have been recognized as immortal classics such as Hamlet, The Sorrows of Young Werther, Frankenstein, Anna Karenina, The Trial, and The Old Man and the Sea, we aim to become a library of imagination that shines beyond time and space by carefully selecting works that refresh our perspective on the universality and specificity of literature.

As part of these efforts, we planned 'World Literature Read by Korean Writers', in which representative Korean writers personally selected world literature works that resonated with their literary tastes or their own world of writing, read them, and shared their thoughts with readers. We serialized it for about two years through the Munhakdongne Naver Cafe (https://cafe.naver.com/mhdn) and compiled it into a book, 'World Literature Read by Korean Writers' (2013).
This expanded edition, presented this time, adds reviews of thirty-four works, from “The Burned Map” (Munhakdongne World Literature Collection 111) to “Slaughterhouse-Five” (Munhakdongne World Literature Collection 150), to the existing edition that contained reviews of a total of ninety-seven works, from “Anna Karenina” to “The Hermit” (Munhakdongne World Literature Collection 110).

There are a total of 134 authors who participated in this book.
A diverse range of writers participated, including novelists spanning generations such as Hwang Seok-yeong, Hwang Jeong-eun, Pyeon Hye-yeong, Choi Eun-yeong, Jeong Ji-don, Jeong Se-rang, Lim Hyeon, Lee Gi-ho, Son Bo-mi, Seong Seok-je, Kim Young-ha, Kim Yeon-su, Kim Ae-ran, and Kim Geum-hee; poets Heo Su-gyeong, Jeong Gyeot-byeol, Lee Byeong-ryul, Lee Gyu-ri, Yoo Hee-gyeong, and Park Yeon-jun; literary critics Hwang Jong-yeon, Shin Hyeong-cheol, Seo Yeong-chae, Kim Hyeong-jung, and Kwon Hee-chul; sociologists Jeong Su-bok and Kim Hong-joong; book critic Lee Hyeon-woo, better known by his pen name 'Roja'; radio PD Jeong Hye-yoon; and singer-songwriter Lucid Fall.

Since many writers from various fields participated, the writing formats are as diverse as the authors' individual personalities, including critiques, essays, short stories inspired by the works, letters to characters, and poems composed from passages from the works. It is also particularly interesting to examine which works each writer selected.
Novelist Baek Young-ok, who stands out for her sensuous style, chose the classic of classics, Anna Karenina; novelist Lee Hye-kyung, who quietly gazes into the inner self, chose The Great Gatsby, translated by novelist Kim Young-ha; poet Kim Min-jeong, who has built her own poetic world with candid and honest poetry, chose The Bloody Room, a collection of short stories by Angela Carter, known as the witch of English literature; and novelist Kim Ae-ran, who deeply empathizes with people in misfortune and pain, chose Herta Müller's Breath, which sublimates the horrors of forced labor camps into poetic language.
This expanded edition includes Pessoa's confessional essay, "The Book of Disquiet," read by poet Lee Gyu-ri, who captures the secrets of life in trivial scenes; Alice Munro's last masterpiece, "Dear Life," read by novelist Choi Eun-young, who preserves a loving gaze on humanity; and W. read by novelist Kim Geum-hee, who delicately depicts the human heart with compassion and love.

The stories include 『The God of Small Things』, Arundhati Roy's only novel, read by novelist Yoon I-hyung who uses her unique science fiction imagination to depict reality; 『War and Peace』, Tolstoy's masterpiece, read by novelist Kim In-sook who confronts and depicts the truth of life head-on; and Kurt Vonnegut's unique and special anti-war novel 『Slaughterhouse-Five』, read by novelist Lim Hyeon who writes powerful stories with restrained sentences.
