Into the book
The children headed to the river to greet Uncle Teruyoshi.
Yu held an unlit lantern, and I held a flashlight.
The mountains of Akishina were shrouded in darkness.
Unlike midday, the river was black as if it were going to suck you in.
When they laid the straw bales on the riverbank and lit them, everyone's faces turned bright red from the orange fire.

My mother, unable to control her excitement, hit my face, head, neck, and back with her slippers.
I feel nothing because my mind's switch is off.
I held my breath and waited for time to pass.
Like a time capsule buried in the ground, it imprisons me in a shell, silently enduring and preserving my life, sending me into the future.

--- p.66

I devoted myself to practicing magic.
The one thing I practiced especially hard for was astral projection magic.
I thought that if I could control it skillfully, I could go somewhere far.
However, astral projection magic rarely succeeds.
I will survive no matter what.
I am left with only these words.

--- p.160

There was a blue mass in front of my eyes.
I took out the sickle from the warehouse, the one my father had brought from Akishina a long time ago, and swung it at the blue lump several times.
(...)
A golden liquid spurted out from the blue mass.
What is this?
Is this a witch's pupa?
I thought intuitively.
We must kill the witch before she hatches.
Otherwise, terrible things will happen.
I knew that much for sure.

“We will increase more tomorrow.
“It will increase even more in the future.”

Publisher's Review
The most provocative and captivating imagination since "Convenience Store Man"!

Sayaka Murata has emerged as a leading writer in contemporary Japanese literature, winning prestigious literary awards one after another, including the Akutagawa Prize, the Noma Literary Award for New Writers, and the Yukio Mishima Prize.
He has captivated readers by crossing the line between reality and unreality with his unique, provocative imagination, and now meets Korean readers with 『Earth Human』.
A work depicting the survival story of outsiders with similar wounds and deficiencies on Earth.
The harmony of strong images and clear metaphors boasts a unique charm.
Immediately following its publication, the book received an enthusiastic response, with many saying it surpassed even "Convenience Store Human." The illusion of normalcy, the violence of an exploitative society…
A new world born from the hands of the marginalized!

Natsuki has been verbally and physically abused by numerous adults for a long time.
The child blames herself for the abuse and begins to believe that she is a magical girl from the planet Pohapipinpobopia.
Natsuki, who had been spending her days alone without being understood by anyone, meets Yuu and Tomomi, who have similar wounds, and opens her heart to them for the first time in her life.
Three people who started a new relationship by sharing the same name, 'Pohapipinpobopiaseongin'.
They try to live their lives in their own way, not the Earth way, but the shadow of Earth humans who do not tolerate 'difference' is gradually coming closer...

A perfect harmony of intense imagery and vivid metaphors!
Sayaka Murata: The pinnacle of literature

Known to have been completed in just one year after winning the Akutagawa Prize, 『Earthlings』, which is surprising, uses powerful imagery to instantly captivate readers.
A blue mass of humans, liquid gold blood, a pink world… .
The more extreme the suffering in reality, the more fairytale-like the images become, leading the reader into the midst of a strange fantasy and making it impossible to stop turning the pages.
The radical variation of the image goes a step further in ensuring novelistic fun.
When the sad reality hidden behind the seemingly cute images of magic wands, transformation compacts, and hedgehog dolls is revealed, readers will truly experience the power of Sayaka Murata's literature, which unfolds stories fluidly while encompassing a variety of moods.
In this novel, the author delves deeply into the issue of body instrumentalization.
Using vivid metaphors such as the Earth factory and human parts, it reveals a sharp critical awareness of a society that forces an 'ordinary life'.
The novel uses various devices to capture the reader's attention, while also placing emphasis on the question, "What is normal?"
The pinnacle of Sayaka Murata's literature, "Earth Humans," which does not take the obvious for granted.
This book will be a gift to both fans who have enjoyed the author's previous works and readers encountering the author for the first time.

"What should we do going forward? We may be practically Pohapipinphobopians now, but to continue living, we have no choice but to rely on the knowledge of Earthlings.
“Wouldn’t it be that we, too, will eventually become Earthlings before long?” “We have to think about it.
Living is a process of coming up with ideas.
“We have to live with the ideas that come from us,” the husband replied, sniffling with a serious expression.
“Idea…….” “Okay.
We don't try to imitate Earthlings; we try to live by coming up with our own ideas.
“That’s how you survive on another planet!”_Page 249

“I really hope they both survive, but I think it’s better to stay this way than be dragged back to the factory.
“Being dragged there is like dying.”_Page 274

Tomomi: Natsuki's husband.
He entered into a contract marriage with Natsuki to escape his violent parents.
