Book Introduction
“You love me even though I’m such a mess.”
A story about the mind, tightly trapped in the prison of the body.

The new novel, "Body," by Park Seo-ryeon, winner of the Hankyoreh Literary Award and the Young Writer Award, and beloved by many readers for works such as "The Bodybuilder Kang Ju-ryong" and "The Shirley Club," has been published as part of Wisdom House's short story series, Wipick.

Since childhood, 'Kimji' had to inhale and exhale awkwardly whenever she took off her clothes in the bathhouse, swimming pool, or in front of men because of her bulging belly like a goldfish.
After reading diet reviews online, I impulsively decided to get liposuction.
What Kimji wanted to change through surgery was not just her protruding stomach, but her entire life.
“From now on, everything will be different.” Feeling as if she will be free from the complex that has plagued her all her life and become a new person, Kimji goes on the operating table.

Interview with author Park Seo-ryeon

Into the book
How many times in my life have I been this confident? I thought to myself as I boarded the subway to Sinsa Station.
The academy I went to because my friends said it taught well, the college I got into based on my college entrance exam score, the major with decent prospects, the guys I dated because they all said they were good for me and I figured they wouldn't be a bad idea to go to, and the job I barely got after sending out hundreds of applications that was neither the best nor the second-best.
Compared to past choices, this one felt revolutionary.
I felt like I was going to break free from the complex I had been suffering from for most of my life and become a new person.
--- pp.30~31

People with abdominal obesity have a higher risk of adult diseases than those with other types of obesity.
Aesthetically, the customer has a body type that is almost model-like, but you must have had a hard time with so much fat in your abdomen.
At that moment, I almost burst into tears.
How did you know how hard it was for me?
Are you by any chance that kind of body type? It's the kind of body type that, when you gain weight, your belly gains first, and when you lose weight, your belly never loses any weight.
Rather than continuing with such trivial words, I nodded vigorously.
I had a burning desire to say something, but the content was so vulgar that I felt like tears would burst out the moment I opened my mouth.
--- p.33

It's hard for me to explain why I decided to have surgery at the last minute.
I guess I was just bored.
Running away from here would save him a considerable amount of cash, even with a 20 percent discount, and it would avoid the unsettling feeling of being ripped off, but nothing would change.
My stomach will always have a forward curve that looks aggressive and assertive, and I, who have lived with it my whole life, will continue to suffer from this complex.
--- pp.34~35

I signed the consent form for the surgery with a heavy heart and made up my mind.
From now on, everything will be different.
What I wanted to change through surgery was not just my protruding stomach, but also my future self and my life.
--- p.36

I know that the other person loves me.
I love him too, so I don't try to find fault with him.
As if I were the body and the other person was only the eyes.
I can only see and show.
It is very difficult to form relationships outside of this structure.
Because I've rarely met anyone who is more insecure about their body than I am.
"What are you thinking about right now?" I once answered a lover like this.
I think about the fact that I can't go even 0.1 millimeters outside my skin.
So the body is not me, but I am the body.
Most of the troubles I know have come from here, and I believe that every trouble has its own story.

Publisher's Review
“You love me even though I’m such a mess.”
A story about the mind, tightly trapped in the prison of the body.

The new novel "Body Body" by Park Seo-ryeon, winner of the Hankyoreh Literary Award and the Young Writer's Award and beloved by many readers for works such as "The Bodybuilder Kang Ju-ryong" and "The Shirley Club," has been published as part of Wisdom House's short story series, Wipick.
Author Park Seo-ryeon, who has been unfolding “a completely different female narrative” across various genres and formats, vividly shows the story of the “mind” that is tightly trapped in the prison called the “body” through her new novel, “Body Body.”
The complex psychology of characters with extreme anxiety and tension about their bodies is depicted with high density, vividly conveying the characters' psychological states and emotional intensity.

371 new messages.
The messenger chatroom where 'Kimji' and his close friends from high school are located suddenly becomes noisy.
The chat room suddenly became silent as soon as Kim Ji-gi checked the message.
My hand, which was scrolling up to understand the context of the conversation, stops in one place.
“You said you were really into it?” The person who revealed the secret was ‘Jjangyu’, a friend that Kimji had strongly urged not to tell.
“Guys, don’t laugh too much.
“It must be so embarrassing.” I felt shame and anger of the intensity I had never felt before in my life.
Kim Ji pretends not to care and even uses emoticons to playfully ask people not to spread rumors, but no one responds.

It was when Kim Ji started feeling inferior about her belly fat that she started feeling inferior about her belly fat when she was in kindergarten.
Because of my goldfish-like belly, I had to inhale and exhale “whenever I took off my clothes, washed, lay down together, or was exposed at a ‘decisive moment’ when my body could no longer be hidden.”
Kim Ji-eun impulsively decides to get liposuction after reading diet reviews on the Internet.
What Kimji wanted to change through surgery was not just her protruding stomach, but her entire life.
“From now on, everything will be different.” Feeling as if she will be free from the complex that has plagued her all her life and become a new person, Kimji goes on the operating table.
How will Kimji's life change after the surgery? Will everything really change?

A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'

Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.

Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, Lim Sol-ah, and Hwang Jeong-eun.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.

Introducing the Wepick Series

Wepick is a short story series from Wisdom House.
It offers a special experience of breathing deeply into ‘one story’.
I dream that this small piece will become a new piece that expands your world, that each small piece will come together to become your story, and that it will become a piece of literature that will be deeply engraved in your heart.
