Or like jumping into a pit of fire

At that moment, I fell in love with a vampire for no reason.
A new vampire romance from author Cheon Seon-ran of 『A Thousand Blues』!

They were all alone.
But I was alone, I didn't want to be alone.
Suyeon lives indifferently, her whole body consumed by loneliness.
Wanda was adopted to a faraway country and became a lonely stranger.
Nanju, a 'good daughter' who has never received any help from her family.
One day, suddenly, that being appears before their eyes like fate.
A vampire, a savior who recognizes the blood of a lonely person and comes to visit at night.
The eerily beautiful and captivating being turns Sooyeon, Wanda, and Nanju's lives upside down...

Into the book
“You won’t believe it.
No matter how much I say, you won't believe me, detective.
And you'll think I'm crazy.
“Why should I be treated like that?”
“I don’t know why you think that, but I don’t treat people that way.
I don't think so."
Wanda looked at Suyeon, who spoke firmly, with considerable interest.
Wanda looked at Suyeon with the same dry gaze as before, and then finally opened her mouth.
And Sooyeon had no choice but to go back on what she had just said.
“It’s a vampire.”
Because this woman was clearly crazy.
“The culprit who killed these people is not a human, but a vampire.”
--- pp.22~23

“A human who meets a vampire becomes happy.
Because that's their specialty.
Just as flowers are beautiful for butterflies, vampires are beautiful for humans.
“Is it like an angel in hell?”
--- p.59

They say that very small and diverse reasons accumulate and pile up to make you like someone.
When people can't list all the reasons one by one, and sometimes even when they can't distinguish them, they say, "It's good for no reason."
Clie said that she liked Wanda for no reason.
Just as I fell in love with Maurice for no reason and ended up marrying him, I fell in love with Wanda for no reason the moment I saw her picture, who lives far away.
--- p.97

“People who are driven to the brink of loneliness and solitude don’t cry.
Should I say I forgot or should I say I know it's useless?
Don't waste a day staring into space with soulless eyes.
The fact that you cry when you're sad, and that you can cry, means that you're alive in its own way.
People who have lost their motivation don't cry.
Crying doesn't make you feel better.
If you don't cry like that, the water in your body won't be able to escape.
Because of that moisture, the blood becomes very thin.
Like a well-aged red wine.
“They have a sense of smell far beyond ours, and they can smell that lonely scent of blood.”
--- p.118

Nanju vividly remembered the moment she first met him.
It was when I was doing that at the goshiwon.
Even then, there was no sign of anything like now.
It wasn't until much later that I realized he was standing in the hallway.
More than worrying that a stranger might see his criminal activities, the first thing that came to mind was that he was beautiful.
Where did it come from?
It doesn't fit in with this city at all.
He hung around the hospital the next day too.
Nanju had been anxious for several days, wondering if he would report her, but at some point her anxiety subsided and she began waiting for him to come every day.
He was a beautiful rose who made Nanju's boring life special.
The thought of seeing him after work was enough to get me through the day.
His presence was enough for his beauty alone.
--- p.175

Publisher's Review
“I am a vampire.
“It’s called a monster.”
"are you okay.
“I’m a monster too.”

Vampires, the creatures that inevitably visit those who cannot find meaning in life.
Are vampires a terrible curse or a perfect salvation?

“It’s a vampire.
“The culprit who killed these people is not a human, but a vampire.”
Cheolma Rehabilitation Hospital located in Incheon’s old city center.
As people are leaving the hospital like a low tide ahead of redevelopment, a series of suicides occur at this hospital, where most patients are suffering from dementia or disabilities.
Already the fourth time.
Detective Soo-yeon, who thinks it is too strange to be a coincidence, tries to find out the truth.
Even though a will was discovered, I couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling.
At the scene where she went to look for clues late at night, Suyeon encounters a guest who had arrived before her.
Wanda, a middle-aged woman.
Wanda introduces herself as "a person who catches people" and asserts that the culprit in this case is not under the detective's jurisdiction.
When Soo-yeon asks who the culprit is, Wanda doesn't believe it, but tells her that the culprit is "not human, but a vampire."
He also said that if there are any more deaths, look carefully for two holes in the nape of the neck or shoulders.
It seems like death will continue in the future.
And Nanju, a nurse working in the ward on the 7th floor of Cheolma Rehabilitation Hospital.
She was trapped in a routine of smuggling drugs and making small fortunes illegally, burdened by the burden of her family and the pressure of debt collection.
I just lived as a good and honest daughter, but before I knew it, I became like that.
Nanju, who was in deep despair, wondering if she could escape this tedious shackle and whether she should continue to live in this life, was confronted by a being that was not human, a vampire.
He whispered that he could save Nanju, and that he would gladly take her hand if she reached out to him.
In front of that terribly perfect being, Nanju couldn't bring herself to say no.
How did Wanda end up being treated like a madman and become a vampire hunter?
What does Nanju have to do with the ominous events taking place at the Cheolma Rehabilitation Hospital?
And why did Suyeon end up getting involved in this strange incident?
The truth behind that mysterious secret slowly unfolds before our eyes.

Winner of the Grand Prize in the Novel Category at the 4th Korea Science Literature Awards
Author of "A Thousand Blues" Cheon Seon-ran returns with a vampire romance!

《The Savior Who Comes at Night》 won the Grand Prize in the Novel category at the 4th Korea Science Fiction Literature Award and the Excellence Award in the Novel category at the 2020 SF Award. It is a novel that stands out as a new attempt by Cheon Seon-ran, the most notable science fiction writer currently working on works such as 《A Thousand Blues》 and 《Love of a Certain Material》.
In this work, which began with “the author’s imagination about a vampire who tastes the blood of a lonely person,” how was the vampire reborn?

The author, who has consistently reflected social issues such as feminism and marginalized groups in her novels, exquisitely reveals in this work how the non-mainstream existence of vampires is consumed and understood in society.
What the author wanted to show the reader was the existence of a vampire that is not typecast, and the reality and time itself that vampires must endure.
A delicate gaze is seen throughout the film on beings who were rejected because they had to drink blood to survive, and beings who do not die and have to endure much longer periods of time than humans.
The setting of a vampire who was forced into isolation and wanders around looking for lonely people to survive is also interesting.
Suyeon, Wanda, and Nanju, who appear in the novel, are beings abandoned or forgotten by society, the country, and their families.
It is perhaps inevitable that they, who have never received proper help and are therefore alone, who have suffered repeatedly because of people and have not been healed by them, will meet a vampire and fall in love.
Through this setting, the author seems to be asking whether it is right to ignore and neglect something that clearly exists in this world for any reason.
This novel is a work that allows one to feel emotions and lingering feelings through diverse interpretations from the perspectives of each character, including Suyeon, Wanda, Nanju, Lily, Ulan, and Greta.
I encourage you to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of this novel by first following the flow of the story, then empathizing with the characters' situations, and finally discovering the author's signature sharp insights hidden throughout.
