Description
Book Introduction
The 『Winter Dictionary』, which looks back on the seasons that have passed, takes out words that have been kept in our hearts, and redefines them with our own stories, has been published.
This summer, through the 『Summer Dictionary』, I spent time thinking about summer and reading words that were tied to summer, and now I have arrived at winter.
This book, consisting of a total of 148 words, was also compiled from manuscripts received from the editorial staff of Achimdal, as well as from the authors and readers of Achimdal.
The story of winter, told by people who embrace the beauty of Korean literature in their daily lives, begins with a single word and transforms into a vivid scene.

'Black tree, winter snow, winter sleep, snowman, graduation ceremony, fluff, Christmas, breath, coat...' Words that come to mind when thinking of winter are reconstructed from someone's memory, take on a new face, and become a story.
In addition, it includes a variety of words that take on new meanings in winter, such as 'alphabetical order, a gathering of people that shrinks in winter, airport, Ferris wheel, hiding place, camera'.
The title of the project, "Snow is a blanket for barley," is a proverb that means that the snow that falls during the winter prevents the barley that will sprout in the spring from drying out.
"Winter Dictionary" was compiled with the hope that the words we cherish will one day become a blanket of snow that warms and protects our hearts.
As the planner says, a dictionary is “a book that tells us nothing unless we open it, but when we tap on the words, a book that tells us much more than we know.”
Beginning with words, moving through scenes intertwined with memories, and ultimately grasping meaning, I hope that through this book, readers can explore their own words and the beautiful meaning of winter as we spend the winter together.

Into the book
“There must be something like winter snow in the human heart.
To keep something until the end, even after giving everything you have.
It's like a pocket of time that holds the lifeblood I gained from surviving.
I'll be crouching, waiting for the strength to live again.
What colors are hidden inside it?
“Just like a tree that spends the winter waiting for tender shoots to bloom with a look just like its name, people must be living in that kind of time.”
--- From "Winter Snow"

“Why are stories about poor people so popular in winter?
Is winter the right season to be the backdrop for tears?
Perhaps it is meant to make us forget the harshness of this season for a moment with a cruelly tearful story.
The promise that spring will come soon is of no comfort.
“For those for whom time has stopped.”
--- From "Tearful"

“The idea that strawberries are alive.
“A red light bulb that turns on alone in winter.”
--- From "Strawberry"

“We are currently practicing how to disperse well.
People who are gathered together are people who will soon separate.
I'm developing softer arm wrestling and hand gestures to break up.
“As the days get shorter and shorter, the end of work actually teaches me to say goodbye in a bright and cheerful way.”
--- From "After Work"

“I love myself more for having words and feelings that I want to reveal without hiding anything.
“From the excitement of sharing daily life with jokes and pranks to a healthy mind driven by respect and gratitude, I can walk on my own, and sometimes even run.”
--- From "Confession"

“We will go back to the place of suffering.
None other than to survive.
To capture the will to live.
In the end, it will take a lot of suffering to make everything okay.
“It’s not that it’s bad.”
--- From "In the End"

“As I was finishing the cake, I looked at the cherry on top of the cake with the same feeling as I was looking at the sunset.
An irregular curve, not the perfect roundness of a tomato or grape.
“The vertically extending top would have required some degree of treading and shimmying to ensure it was solid and straight.”
--- From "Cake"

“I will become a person who goes further by adding the courage you gave me to the heart of having a good year and starting anew.
I don't think I'll ever be able to finish writing this.
I wish the recipient's name could be written more elaborately.
“I hope I can make you laugh and cry when you receive this letter.”
--- From the "Acceptance Speech"

“Someday we can sit together and talk while we each knit.
One of those days when it's particularly cold outside and warm inside.
If you want, I'd be happy to listen to your story for a long time.
It will also be remembered for a long time.
“The stories we shared will be embedded in the knitting of that day and will forever embrace us.”
--- From "Knitting"

“There are times when I become my own enemy.
The feeling I get whenever I feel weak and poor.
At that time, we say that a bitter cold has come.
I can't live without metaphors.
“Parables that show what is difficult to explain and willingly make clear what is vague can also become the title for a difficult time in one’s life.”
--- From "Bitter Cold"

“I feel lonely because I have been with others and I remember that time for a long time.
If I was alone from the beginning.
“If only I could be completely alone.”
--- From "The Back Mountain"

148 Winter Words as a Moving Spark
Our Winter Story: Bringing Warmth

If a story I read in a book makes me take care of a story that has been lingering inside me, it is the courage that the book gives me.
With courage, we rescue the past and dream of the future.
In the meantime, time passes and we leave, but the memories of the seasons remain.
The 『Winter Dictionary』, which defines words that breathe memories and settle in the remaining seasons, has been published.
This dictionary is a book that appears as a story next to us, and it is also a place to take care of the winter scenery that has been staying within us.

As the 『Summer Language Dictionary』 published this summer received a lot of positive responses and support from readers, the process of redefining the seasons through words and stories naturally continued into winter.
The manuscripts of 23 authors and 16 readers of Achimdal, published by Achimdal, and the editors of Achimdal, who love Korean literature, are included together.
The act of diverse people choosing their own words and rewriting their meanings through stories, coming together, is like gathering around a campfire to warm themselves together, and it brings a sense of warmth while also reminding us of our own sparks.
The word that comes to mind when thinking of winter makes us reflect on the winters we have experienced and look forward to the winter to come.
Someone's story, which allows it to expand into various meanings without being bound by dictionary definitions, becomes a matter of raising the resolution of caring for a season.

Words that can be fully felt in winter, such as 'winter naengmyeon, winter sleep, Salvation Army, snowman, dongji porridge, strawberry, bungeoppang, dawn song, stollen', and words that have been around us regardless of the season, such as 'alphabetical order, in the end, compassion, grave, hallway, love, poetry, name, memory', approach us with new meaning by putting on the coat of winter.

The total of 148 words included in this 『Winter Dictionary』 are 148 definitions, 148 questions, 148 winters, 148 layers of snowflakes, 148 matchsticks, and 148 books.
I hope you can fully experience this surrounding, which holds its own unique story and falls like snowflakes, creating a scene for us.
The "Winter Dictionary," written by editors, writers, and readers all working together to protect the perimeter of winter, knocks on your door and awaits your story.
I wonder about your winter and tell you a story I've been holding onto for a long time.
“Let your heart walk on its own, sometimes running.” (Confessions)

Planning Notes

『Winter Dictionary』 will begin to open with the reader's gaze and the knocking that comes from it.
When you give your heart to open words, stories that were closed in your heart begin to flow out.
We can listen to it, speak it out, and gradually preserve this knocking as the rhythm of winter, the rhyme of life.
It's cold here, but there's plenty to cover up.
A small adventure where stories are passed down from story to story, with new stamps attached from the winter that someone sent first.
Here, under the blanket of pure white snow, the green barley has decided to awaken.
