I do cleaning work?
Description
Book Introduction
From a hot independent publication to a trusted bestseller!
We have received consistent love and support from readers for the past 6 years.
A revised edition of Kim Ga-ji's "I'm a cleaner?" has been published!

Kim Ga-ji, a janitor with 11 years of experience and a freelance illustrator with 6 years of experience.
During that time, he worked as a cleaner, drew pictures, and made books, and said, “I’m happier than I thought because I’ve been living a little differently.”
It was a time of growth, where I met people who were creating work and life in new ways, people who were finding their own paths beyond social prejudice, and people who learned about the diversity of life that I had never known before.
But the world's prejudices are so strong that I still often feel hurt by the sharp and pointed gaze.
Was six years too short a time to change the world?
Thus, Kim Ga-ji's debut work, "I'm a cleaner," is back with another revamp to meet readers.

We included a preface to the revised edition, meticulously examining the text and illustrations throughout, and included a special interview at the end of the text about the people connected by the link between 'books' and 'cleaning work' - "2025, We Are Doing Cleaning Work."
It contains a thick and strong heart that wants to fight against prejudice a little longer and a little stronger, but it is not overly decorated.
This is because I want to share the spirit of the clumsy but brave 'beginning' with you for a long time, while still preserving the original form of the first book.
In order to live a life where he can exist just by 'existing' regardless of his occupation, he is diligently taking care of himself and protecting himself even today.

Into the book
I encountered a lot of prejudice when choosing something unconventional.
Some of those prejudices were created by others, and some were created by me.
Regardless of likes and dislikes, the lives of the few were a bit lonely.
However, the seemingly uncommon 'cleaning day' soon gave me an uncommon 'life'.
Sometimes I think it might not be a bad idea to take an unfamiliar path.
Living a little differently, I'm happier than I thought.
So, what I'm saying is, can't it be a little different?
---p.12 'Prologue'

Me cleaning and me drawing.
The question “What do you do?” gives you a choice.
Occupations that require explanation and occupations that do not require explanation but are not clear.
So when I get asked, 'What do you do?', I get flustered.
What kind of person am I? In conclusion, I'm a two-job person who cleans and paints.
---p.34-36 'So what kind of person am I?'

There are times in life when you have to make choices.
Sometimes, because that choice is too much of a hassle, we defer it to others.
This is where the difference begins.
My choices have consequences and I am responsible for them.
Congratulations, and resentment.
But in choices that are left to others, we look for the cause.
Good results are fortunate, but bad results are your fault! It's your fault for forcing this! I'm the victim! No matter how much you say, the result is ultimately mine.
Is it the risk of choice or the escape of leaving it to others?
I don't know what the right answer is, but blaming someone won't solve anything.

---p.83-87 'The Difference Between Choice and Coercion'

The meaning of the dream in the dictionary is as follows.
'A hope or ideal that one wishes to realize.'
Hopes or ideals that we wish to realize sometimes require precise nouns.
Even if it is not clear, a healthy life is a dream, but it is clearly an ideal and hope that one wishes to realize in the dictionary sense, so it is a dream.
But then someone asks, “What is your real dream?”
I also learned that 'dream = job'.
So, there are times when we neglect jobs we never thought we would get, or jobs we didn't want but had no choice about.
I think there are times when I make myself a 'failure' who couldn't achieve my dreams.
While it's wonderful to have a job you love, any job that provides a living or stability is still valuable work.
It is only a small part within the dream category, but the dream can be filled with other parts as well.

---p.108-112 'The Correlation Between Dreams and Career'

“How do you overcome other people’s gaze?”
“Um… I didn’t win.
I endured rather than won.
I wanted to win in my heart, but in reality I couldn't win.
So I was nervous, but I think I endured it.
I've learned many times that saying no doesn't mean you don't really care.
So I chose to endure rather than win.”
If you are someone who can win, it would be good to make that choice, but if you cannot win, it would be good to have faith in your own judgment and endure.

---p.125-128 'How do you overcome other people's gaze?'

‘Responsibility’ makes me independent, ‘integrity’ gives me confidence, and ‘consistency’ makes me believe in myself.
I think an adult is someone who has confidence and belief in their own actions and can act independently.
---p.180-182 'Set of 3 Words for Adults'

Publisher's Review
“I was wondering which choice was right between the world’s prejudice and my own prejudice.

Thanks to those worries, I was able to meet ‘my true self.’”

'Should I make a career out of what I love, or what I'm good at?' This is a question that everyone has thought about at least once while growing up.
If you think about it a little more deeply, you'll come across moments where you think, "Do I even like anything? I'm not good at anything."
Then, I feel lost and don't know what to do, and I am amazed by the people who each do their part in their own place.
When the shackles of worry and anxiety, such as wondering who I am and what I should do to excel, become thicker and thicker… Is there no way to raise the resolution of my courageous heart instead of worrying and being anxious?

In fact, the alternatives and solutions to this question will also vary from person to person.
Since there can be no multiple-choice answers to the questions of life, each example is provided based on life experiences.
here.
What about the case of author Kim Ga-ji?

As of 2025, he is a young man who has made a career out of what he is good at and what he likes.
Not only that, but as you try and achieve things you've always wanted to do and things you never thought of, you often receive public attention and have influence.
How are things that were unimaginable when he completed his self-published book, "I'm a Cleaner," seven years ago, now happening in his life?

When he was overcome with worry and anxiety, the direction of his mind he chose was 'don't think you can't do it.'
When I started cleaning, I was hesitant, thinking, "What if (my mom) thinks I'm embarrassed?" But as I gradually reflected on whether it was due to the world's prejudice or my own, I decided to boldly move between job and work, career and dream, reality and ideal.
Days of continuing to do cleaning work to make a stable living, drawing pictures and making books to fulfill unfulfilled dreams.
By encountering various choices in life through those who write their own path beyond the multiple-choice answers provided by the world, author Kim Ga-ji develops the tastes and values of the world called "I."
If only we could erase the boundaries between 'can't' and 'can', we could bravely take one step at a time, and then another.

“I want to be someone who exists just by existing, regardless of their occupation.”
Books included in the middle school "Career and Occupation" section!

Perhaps because she chose the unfamiliar profession of 'cleaning' or because she lives in a way that is 'different from others', author Kim Ga-ji has received considerable attention.
At the time when the publishing of professional essays was booming, she was a symbol of the N-jobber as a 'young (female) cleaner' and 'freelance artist', and was constantly requested for interviews and coverage by the press and broadcasting companies.
But at no point was the author himself noisy or excited.
This is because I had to be even more diligent in fulfilling my responsibilities in order not to lose balance between what I had to do and what I wanted to do.

As time passes for author Kim Ga-ji, who has now transitioned from her 20s to her mid-30s, the time for "I'm a Cleaner" also piles up densely.
This book has been included in the middle school 『Career and Occupation』 textbook, and the author has been giving career lectures to countless children and teenagers across the country every year.
We often hear stories of people who changed their careers and started working as cleaners after reading the book.
Accordingly, the author included a special interview at the end of the text titled “2025, We Are Doing Cleaning Day” - a story about people connected by the link between “books” and “cleaning work.”

The author's words, "Sometimes I think it's not a bad idea to go back down an unfamiliar path," are in line with the generosity that allows one to comfort others by saying, "It's okay to make mistakes, to start over, it's okay."
But in our current reality, where we can't stop racing toward our immediate goals even for a single day, is this truly idealistic? Is it more realistic to whip ourselves into submission, believing that even a moment's pause, even a single missed step, could bring the tower we've worked so hard to crumble? While we may support and long for a "life of alternative choices," we might still cringe at the gaze and thoughts of others.

So once again, I kindly offer you, my readers, "I'm a cleaner, aren't I?" as an example of how you can raise your courageous resolve instead of worry and anxiety.
The difference between someone creating opportunities and someone not finding them is not really that big.
People who do what they love and people who are good at what they do all live with joy and sorrow.
So, what if we just erase the boundaries and start taking one step at a time?
As time passes while walking, there will surely be a day when you look back and find yourself standing on a road you never imagined, looking quite good.

Of course, you might get lost on that path again and have other worries, but so what?
Isn't life like that, where everyone lives similarly yet differently without any set answers?
I hope this book can be of great help to those who dream of, wonder about, and fear a "different way," yet strive to ultimately achieve "their own way."
