It's okay to wander
Description
Book Introduction
Young people's anxiety is deepening day by day.
In order to keep up with others, it seems like you need to have at least one luxury bag, and you should follow the 'small luxury' trend of enjoying luxury items such as perfume and lipstick.
Everyone is running at full speed towards success, represented by economic prosperity, so there is no time to look back on oneself, let alone those around oneself.
Even while running, I feel anxious because I don't know where I'm going or where I should go.
If I run hard, there seems to be no hope of me being able to buy a house to live in.
Young people are withering away in a hamster wheel of anxiety, running and becoming more anxious as they run.
Here, we lend the insight of Monk Beopryun, who said, “It’s Okay to Wander.”
The fresh perspective of Venerable Pomnyun can immediately relieve our anxiety and give us the strength to move forward.
It will help you organize the endless worries and challenges that arise at every stage of life in a simple way and solve them wisely.
The revised edition of "It's Okay to Wander", now in its seventh year, contains everything from stories that address immediate concerns to a long-term perspective that provides a correct view of society so we can find our center.
I hope to be a compass of wisdom for wandering youth.

Into the book
It is your choice whether to fight hardships now for results or to enjoy life now even if you face bad results later.
If you make a choice, don't regret the outcome.
Regret is what makes my life a failure.
Even if a bad outcome is predicted, you can accept it positively if you know about it in advance.
From the time new leaves sprout in the spring, you should already anticipate that the leaves will fall in the fall.
If you just admire the new leaves in the spring, you'll cry when the leaves fall in the fall.
If you could have predicted the fall of leaves from the moment new leaves sprouted, you wouldn't have to shed tears.
Rather than just looking at the present, we need to anticipate the outcome first and prepare for it.
If I can predict the outcome, I can change it.
Because there is plenty of time to prepare in advance.
--- p.26
A common mistake young people make is wasting time just thinking about it.
So I said, 'Don't think about it.
I advise you to 'take action first'.
If you try here and there, sometimes you will make mistakes.
Then you can fix it.
If you did something wrong, you can apologize, and if you don't know, you can ask someone.
With this attitude, I challenge, fix, challenge again, fail, fix, study, and challenge again… … .
If you keep going like this, there will be no room for despair or disappointment.
Rather, continuous challenges always foster a positive attitude toward life.
If you actively strive to live your life so that your intentions and outcomes align, wisdom will naturally come.
Every moment right now is my life.
Apart from this, there is no other life for me.
Tomorrow is tomorrow, and the present is what matters.
So focus on the present.
We have a responsibility to make our lives completely happy and free.
--- p.55
It doesn't matter if you fall three times or ten times.
Just 'fell down'.
Then just think, ‘I should get up.’
If you get up and go forward again and fall again, you will think, 'I fell again.
Then you can think, ‘I have to get up again.’
This will allow you to move forward.
There is no need to count that I fell three times or ten times while sitting down.
So, instead of seeing failure as frustration and despair, embrace it as practice.
--- p.67
Just because you're young, you have the opportunity to try anything.
Researching, challenging, and producing results is a happy thing in itself, regardless of whether it is successful or not.
--- p.74
New paths are always difficult.
A new path is difficult to succeed on even a hundred attempts, but it succeeds only once in a thousand attempts.
You have to accept it willingly and joyfully.
If you do something out of greed, most people will fail and become frustrated.
But if you do it for fun, it's completely different.
'What fun is there in living if you go down the same path as everyone else? You guys should take that path.
Even if I die pioneering a new path, I will ensure that my descendants can follow in my footsteps and advance further.'
You have to approach it with this kind of attitude.
--- p.88
If you are young, don't be afraid to meet many people and build relationships. Learn from them as you get to know them.
It's okay to wander sometimes.
Even if I wander for a moment now, I can quickly re-establish my resolve and come to my senses.
It's okay if you're wrong.
If you're wrong, just fix it.
It's okay to fail.
If you fail, just try again.
So always think positively and don't be afraid to move forward again.
--- p.108
Choice is not a problem.
Any choice is fine, but the reason you hesitate to make a choice is because you don't want to take responsibility for the consequences of your choice.
There is no good or evil, right or wrong, good or bad in choice.
Any choice is fine as long as you can anticipate the consequences of your choice and accept them.
--- p.125
The right values are important.
Everyone is busy standing in line and following the flow of the world, but that path is not a meaningful life.
Only by breaking free from it can I truly become the master of my own life.
Many people have no standards for what is most meaningful in their lives.
This is called 'loss of self'.
I'm just floating along in the great current without any self-centeredness.
Being swept away here is like being a piece of trash or a piece of wood floating in a huge flood.
So, instead of just being anxious, I hope you look back at yourself and take a closer look at your current situation.
People are becoming so obsessed with money that they are damaging their health, causing discord in their families, leading to divorce, and abandoning their children.
Become rich in spirit.
Living without harming or harassing others is truly a blessing in this life and in the next.
I hope you don't bring trouble upon yourself by looking at others and being greedy.
--- p.284
Life is not judged solely by its results.
Life is a process.
Even if we die when we die, we must live each day.
The outcome of life is death.
If we only evaluate based on results, we'll all die.
Only by viewing life as a process can we find satisfaction in 'what kind of life we have lived.'

The joy of the process
Failure and Happiness
Monk Beopryun emphasizes that life is a process.
If we judge life by its results alone, we will all die.
We must live each day even if we die when we die.
Only by viewing life as a process can we feel rewarded for the life we have lived.
Mountaineering isn't just about reaching the summit.
It would be nice to reach the top, but even getting halfway isn't a failure.
Since it's exercise, it's good as much as I did.
It doesn't matter if you fall three times or ten times.
Just 'fell down'.
You can simply think, 'Then I should get up.'
If you get up and go forward again and fall again, you will think, 'I fell again.
Then you can think, ‘I have to get up again.’
This way you can move forward.
I don't need to count that I fell three times or ten times while sitting down.
So, I suggest that we don't view failure as frustration and despair, but rather as practice.
Young people often waste all their time just thinking.
To this, Monk Beopryun said, 'Don't think about it.
He advises, 'Take action first.'
If you try here and there, sometimes you will make mistakes.

Why does my dream keep changing?
There is no good or bad in life.
Venerable Pomnyun says frankly that it is difficult to achieve anything with a weak mind that is easily confused.
It's like fallen leaves drifting in the autumn wind.
In autumn, fallen leaves fly in the cold wind, rising into the sky and then falling to the ground, being swept here and there.
It may seem like you're flying, but you never know when the wind will stop and you'll land in a valley.
It makes us realize that although we may seem to be living our lives centered on ourselves, that is not actually the case.
We always live according to karma.
It seems like I'm laughing and crying, but in reality, I laugh and cry depending on the mood.
I can't control my emotions as I want.
I say that being the master of my own life means living a life that is not led around by the people of the world.
No matter what the world's standards are or how the world flows, you must have the ability to judge right and wrong from your own perspective.
Many young people worry about whether they should follow others or not.
But our lives are not something that has absolute values, with some things being good and some things being bad.
Either choice is fine.
The important thing, he emphasizes, is to take responsibility for your choices.
It is your choice whether to fight hard for results or to enjoy life now even if it means facing a bad outcome.
Just as we know that in the spring when new leaves are sprouting, the leaves will fall in the fall, we need to anticipate the outcome first and prepare for it, rather than just looking at the present.
Even if a bad outcome is predicted, if I know in advance, I can accept it positively and I can change the outcome.
There is ample time to prepare in advance.
If you live your daily life in a hurry like a racehorse.
When you open your eyes, happiness and freedom are right here, right next to us...
All young people of this era are working hard to live happily even at this very moment.
But if you keep trying so hard, you may end up not being able to truly experience the taste of happiness until you die.
Accordingly, Venerable Pomnyun emphasizes that one can become happy right here, right now.
They say that if you are satisfied with this moment, you will immediately become happy.
Why should I wander around like this and die without ever tasting it when I could be happy right here, right now?
If you are satisfied now, you will be happy.
If you don't have to worry about what other people think, you will be free.
Everyone can be happy and free right now, but they waste too much time and effort trying to do so, and end up regretting their life when they die.
If you live your daily life in a hurry like a racehorse, under the illusion that you are 'lacking' compared to others even though you have a lot, you should take a look back.
Monk Beopryun asks us to think about the gap between what we can do and what we need to do.
What I can do and what I should do are two entirely different things.
They say that everything you do to achieve your goal is greed.
The very act of setting a goal to do more than one's ability is greed.
If you are greedy, you become anxious and impatient.
So, Venerable Pomnyun advises that in order to achieve what you desire, you must first let go of your greed.
Giving up greed means doing what you can.
If I set myself a goal of doubling my current ability and try to achieve it, I will have to work that much harder.
You can't achieve it by living the same way as everyone else.
However, it is not as easy as it sounds and it is even more difficult to put into practice.
So what if you don't put in the effort and just think about it in your head? You'll just end up feeling anxious and impatient.
The more this happens, the more difficult it becomes to focus on your efforts. This is the insight of Monk Beopryun.
