Containing the universe of time
Beginning with the appearance of the Earth hundreds of millions of years ago, "Past and Future, We" takes us through the time of millions, hundreds of thousands, and thousands of years ago, and places us in the present landscape.
And here, as we turn the pages again, the present landscape leads to tomorrow morning, next month, next year, and moments farther into the future.
If the picture book, "We, in the Past and in the Future," which makes us dream of the future scenery that will one day arrive after crossing the past of hundreds of millions of years, needed a subtitle, wouldn't it be "A Time Travel in One Volume"?
What makes "Past and Future, Us" special is the way it condenses a long period of time into one book.
Starting with the first chapter, which tells the story of hundreds of millions of years ago, the page size gradually decreases until the middle of the book, which contains the present, and then increases again as the story moves into the future.
That is, the page size gets smaller as you move from the past to the present, and then gets larger again as you move from the present to the future.
This page structure, which gradually contracts and expands around the present, as if an hourglass had been turned over, makes the book feel as if it penetrates all time, past and future.
In this way, “In the past and in the future, we” explains the length of time in terms of the size of space.

Publisher's Review
Johanna Schaible, the author who wrote and illustrated this book, says that she wanted to create a picture book where the format of the book itself becomes a narrative, rather than a story driven by one or two main characters.
The keywords used when working on ‘In the Past and in the Future, We’ were ‘night, air, and time.’
Perhaps for this reason, the pictures decorating each page are focused on capturing the emotions of each landscape rather than being drawn to convey a specific story or theme.
These landscapes, described in very short sentences, were created by adding collage to hand-drawn pictures.
Johanna Schaible, who had no prior experience working on a book, was one of the first members of the Bolo Klub, an organization that supports young picture book creators in Switzerland, and it is said that she developed the overall plot of this book by sharing opinions with others there.
He said that he personally worked on a dummy by threading actual papers together to experiment with the unique form of the book, and that he hopes that through “Past and Future, Us” “people of all ages will have the opportunity to talk about what kind of future they each imagine and want to create together.”
"Past and Future, We" was also selected by dPictus, a British picture book platform.
It was selected as the best unpublished picture book project of 2019 by winning the Unpublished Picture Book Showcase, a project in which 30 publishers from around the world reviewed the best books from over 350 unpublished picture books to explore the possibility of publishing them, with 23 publishers selecting the best.
Thanks to this interest, “In the Past and in the Future, We” was simultaneously translated and published in nine countries, including Korea.
A Swedish daily newspaper, one of these countries, described the book as “an artistic, beautiful, and innovative time machine,” and the Korean translators, Jeong Won-jeong and Park Seo-young, said in their translation that it was “a picture book that uses every means at its disposal to speak about the meaning of a finite life lived in infinite time.”
