Should I open the door and go out?
Should I open the door and go out?
Description
Book Introduction
A beautiful reconciliation of past and present

Kim Young-sook's essay collection, "Shall We Open the Door and Go Out?" is a book full of questions.
The mother's question is added to the daughter's question.
While questions piled up, where did the daughter and mother walk, who did they meet, what did they cry and laugh about to get here?
Some may call the journey to find the answer to that question growth, while others may call it life.

"Let's Open the Door and Go Out" is a book that delicately captures the author's process of beautifully combining the vast gap between the time she was a daughter and the time she became a mother through the power of love.
Author Kim Young-sook movingly portrays the challenges and realizations she encounters as a mother of a special child who comes to her like a gift, and the process of coming to understand her own mother.
Every time I stopped walking for a moment, facing a barrier in life, I looked back and saw my mother standing there, and my younger self beside her.
At that moment, you realize that life is not a path you walk alone, but a path you walk awkwardly, leaning on each other.
I wrote this book to reconcile my past and present along the way.

Publisher's Review
For a warmer today than yesterday

Kim Young-sook's essay collection, "Shall We Open the Door and Go Out?", calmly depicts the journey of understanding one another and finding oneself within the confines of family.
It brings back moments I thought I had forgotten and speaks to me now.
So, I tell you the story of a new me that I met again because I didn't stop walking the path I had walked with my family.
Even though he doesn't know where he's going, he even suggests, "Let's open the door and go out."
It makes me hopeful that if I muster up the courage to open the door and step outside, another world will unfold before me.
I hope today's steps are a little warmer than yesterday's, and I encourage myself that I have persevered through the difficult process so far.

"is it so.
There is nothing that cannot be done.
It just goes a little slower.
Because children's brains are reversible, they have the power to compensate for damaged areas, so appropriate help and treatment are important.
He may seem a bit clueless and rigid, always following his own rules, but he also possesses a strong curiosity about the world, a bold desire to learn things firsthand, and a rich imagination! Our child possesses many strengths.
“Enough to fill in what is lacking.”

A mother's courage that prevents despair

Part 1 of "Let's Open the Door and Go Out", "The Birth of Chaos", depicts the growth process of a daughter born at the end of 26 weeks until she turns four.
Part 2, “When Courage is Needed,” looks back on the author’s most painful time.
Part 3, “Standing on the Border,” depicts the times when differences are acknowledged as one begins a new life in Gokseong.
Part 4, "Time to Soar," contains a story about overcoming life's ups and downs with family, and Part 5, "Walking toward Hope," unfolds as the days unfold as the family gradually grows despite numerous difficulties.

Through this book, Kim Young-sook, as a mother and daughter of a child standing on the border of difference, comforts herself by writing about the wounds left by life.
Even if the wounds heal, the memories will not be erased.
The author builds himself up on that memory and gains the strength to live tomorrow.

"Let's Open the Door and Go Out" is a record of hope, painstakingly written with the hope that my daughter will also have the same courage, as I know that the courage of my mother within me has kept me from despair.
It is a heartwarming gift-like message not only to the author herself and her daughter, but also to all those who are overcoming yesterday and dreaming of a new today.

Author's Note

“I still have the task of making sure that my daughter, who is unsure of where she will go, finds her own path and walks it well.
Let's stop saying things that are obviously not going to work out and start taking steps forward.
And we will walk that path together.
They say that no matter how well you live, misfortune will come.
They say that the perfect time you dream of never comes.
But we know.
I know that life is awkward and full of regrets, and that when one door closes, another opens.
You will come to realize what it truly means to live the life you want and that you cannot relive your life.
So we talk about hope.
“Because I believe today will be better than yesterday.”
