May 23, 2023. Essay PD Lee Na-young
“The feeling of living my life autonomously.”
It is inevitable that we will be different from others,
To live as my complete self

Lim Kyeong-seon, who has consistently received support from readers for her writings that meticulously examine the complex psychology of humans and delve into the value of attitude and freedom, including the novels “Hotel Story” and “Calling a Name Quietly,” and the essays “Ordinary Married Life” and “On Attitude,” has published her new work “Living as Myself” by Maumsanchaek.

Lim Kyeong-seon has been seriously contemplating the following three topics in recent years.
It is a choice to live a life that maintains its center even as you grow older, to pursue sustainable writing and writing as a writer, and to live a life that is true to yourself.
After much thought, Lim Kyeong-seon realized that aging, writing, and life choices all stemmed from her desire to live as "herself" as a writer.
Every human being is an individual being and cannot live by following others.
In order to live without conflict with oneself, one must be as honest as possible about one's feelings and calmly examine one's direction in life.

After organizing her concerns, Lim Gyeong-seon met with readers and shared her thoughts based on these.
He talked about how difficult it is to achieve what is commonly called 'self-worth', and emphasized that it is a narrow path that requires a long period of thought and practice.
Readers who want to live as authentically as possible in an uncertain life sympathized with Lim Gyeong-seon's story and responded enthusiastically.
"Living as Myself" is a record of Lim Kyeong-seon's fierce search for answers to her worries, and is a book that contains the process of finding the direction of life together with the reader.

The feeling that I am living my life autonomously, thinking, worrying, and acting, making choices with healthy self-doubt.
I think that's what 'living as myself' means.

Into the book
In other words, I thought that growing old as a decent adult meant living without being conscious of one's age and without being swayed by ageism.

--- p.23

Where have all those women gone, so actively engaged in their work back then? They often vanish from sight at some point.
We need to see more people actively working in areas where they can add value, even as they age.
--- pp.35~36

I believe that the complexity and contradiction of human beings are extremely human and beautiful, so I want to understand people's hearts carefully and deeply, and I just want to talk about it.
Don't look down on the world and people.
Remember that what you see on the outside is not everything, there are many layers underneath.
I too want to live my life feeling emotions vividly.

--- p.40

It may sound ironic, but being able to control oneself is what makes humans free.

--- p.41

I think writers have a desire to constantly reveal new sides of themselves, discover unknown sides of themselves, and continue to transform.

--- p.81

Even so, I no longer think about whether I have talent or not.
First of all, I just think about whether I can write today's manuscript.
The only thing I can do is to not give up on myself, not care about other people's well-being, and constantly put myself in front of my desk.
In that sense, writing may be closer to a technical profession than an art profession.

--- p.120

People usually start out making choices that others want them to make (because they want to be recognized by their parents, society, or others), and then they start asking themselves, "What do I really want?" and start searching for "a life that is true to me."
But some people, having lived their lives doing only what they wanted to do when they were young, now choose to find fulfillment in doing what others want them to do and making others happy.
This direction is also natural to the parties involved.
I believe that humans inevitably experience both of these situations as they live.
Even if you live according to others' will, you will eventually find your own place, and you will encounter a new freedom that allows you to look outward and realize that you cannot always live according to your own will.
I think it's a natural cycle.

--- p.168

It is said that when daily choices accumulate, they become habits or routines, and when lifestyle choices accumulate, they become tastes.
As life choices accumulate, you gradually become more and more "yourself."

--- pp.172~173

I'm willing to pay any number of costs—responsibility, effort, the possibility of being disliked or failing—to make choices that are consistent with who I am.
To live as myself.

--- p.173

It would be nice if regret could change something, but it's a feeling that doesn't lead anywhere.
Things that cannot be undone can only be endured and passed by.
If you ruminate on the feeling of regret too much, it will build up inside you like an impurity, so it would be best if you could quickly let go of the regret that comes.

--- p.177

I think there is no greater joy in life than love.
It feels like it's alive and breathing.
People avoid it because it is painful, but the reason people fall in love is because it is worth it, so they are willing to endure the pain.
Also, our lives will ultimately be remembered by who we loved and how we loved.

Publisher's Review
“The choices I make in life become me.”
The feeling of fulfillment that comes from becoming more like yourself than before

Through her essays, “On Attitude” and “To Be Free,” Lim Kyeong-seon has written frankly about her work, love, and attitude of trust as an individual and a woman.
"Living as Myself" adds the keyword "choice" to the values that Lim Kyeong-seon has been emphasizing.
It is no exaggeration to say that our lives are made up of choices, from the small everyday choices like deciding what to eat to the choices that cultivate our preferences for food, clothing, and shelter, and even the weighty choices that determine the direction of our lives.
Lim Kyeong-seon says that choice is not an end in itself, but a means.
The reason we struggle and make careful choices is, if we look closely, because it is for our own satisfaction and fulfillment.
Sometimes, it's about honestly choosing the option you like better, even if it doesn't match the profit and loss.
Lim Kyeong-seon says that the values she truly values in life are revealed in such an appearance.
Moreover, such choices involve a process of clearly recognizing what you want, so you get closer to 'living as yourself.'

There is a greater value hidden in things that cannot be explained simply through calculations, in things that are earnestly chosen because it is okay to suffer a little loss, because it is okay to have difficulties, because it does not matter what others think.
No matter what anyone says, there will be something in there that I consider happiness.
In my case, any appearance was 'freedom' and 'beauty'.

Lim Kyeong-seon writes frankly about 'aging' and says that she has actually avoided writing about age-related topics.
I didn't find it appealing because the topic of aging was simply consumed in a flat way in various media, and more than anything, I had the view that people who were originally cool and good would still be good people when they get older.
Lim Gyeong-seon first observes and classifies people's attitudes toward age in detail.
And we find people who are not overly conscious of their age and 'live as themselves' no matter how old they are, and we call this 'ageless'.
People who are firm-minded, free from self-pity, and honest and straightforward.
They continue their careers by consistently working on their own projects, such as author Haruki Murakami and actress Julianne Moore.
It's difficult to completely forget about your age, but you can control how much it affects you and how you let it affect you.
Furthermore, by accurately knowing your own limitations and possibilities, you become more free within them.
If there are readers who have been feeling fearful of aging due to various pressures of society, they will feel that feeling fading a little as they read Im Gyeong-seon's writing.
As time passes, it makes me look forward to the sense of freedom and fulfillment that I will gain as I become more of a person, not just a person, but a person.

To age agelessly, I must consistently live as myself.
It means that the intensity of one's identity and life is strong enough to dilute the stereotypes that come with age.
In other words, rather than describing that person based on our preconceived notions about typical women or men of that age, we should be able to describe that person based on their unique personality and charm.

Rather than hoping for a complete accomplishment in life,
Accepting every moment as an imperfect being

As a full-time writer with 18 years of experience, working diligently with the consistent support of readers, Lim Kyeong-seon writes in detail about a sustainable writer's life based on her own experiences.
While I look askance at the various courses that advertise that anyone can quickly write a book, I emphasize that in order to live a life of continuous writing, not just writing one book, one must ultimately have many unique stories stored within.
Rather than talking lightly about writing, I encourage you to seriously confront your own desire to become a writer by sharing the real pain and joy of it.
In an age of abundant content, this is a story worth listening to if you are a reader who still wants to write and speak to the world.

The foundation for a sustainable writing life, the driving force that keeps me writing, is an inexhaustible inner impulse.
We can only continue writing if we have something we want to write and express.
Page 98

The value of facing one's emotions and living as a free individual, which Lim Kyeong-seon has been talking about, is still valid in this book.
A life where you love your work and listen to your heart even as you grow older.
It will be a life where you maintain your center as 'me' even in the midst of the occasional confusion and your unique individuality will become even more distinct.
Lim Kyeong-seon, who has inspired many people through her previous works, guides readers into a world of calm thought in this book as well.
There is no such thing as a perfect life because there are no right answers in life, but it is because it is imperfect that it can be beautiful.
"Living as Myself" is a book that follows the insights of Im Kyeong-seon as a writer and an individual, and allows us to imagine the joy and beauty of "living as myself."

As an imperfect being, I hope to be able to accept the failures and pains that we may experience as they are, and rather than jumping to conclusions, I hope to be able to quietly digest them within myself and endure the process.
Acceptance fosters the power to think about an issue from multiple angles.
Fundamental change or growth will come so slowly.

Lim Gyeong-seon (author)'s words

Life feels even more difficult because there are no objective answers.
The situation becomes more complicated because we cannot live like everyone else, following what everyone else does.
So the best, or only way left for us is to 'live as myself.'
You might ask, "What the heck is that? Why should I live 'my way'?"
The reason I have to do that is because no matter what anyone says, I cannot help but be different from others.
Each of us is born as an individual being, so we must take special care of and adjust our own lives so that we can live without conflict with ourselves as much as possible.
This way, you can avoid becoming unhappy because of the traps you have set and become as free as possible.
