The Age of Confession
The Age of Confession
Description
Book Introduction
“What more can I love in the future?”
The novel, which was supposed to be a tool to repair me, was actually a needle that pricked me.
Sentences that confess, as if spitting out, that they can't help but love

Author Lee Hyeon-seok, who has keenly sensed and explored this era as a doctor and writer, has published short story collections such as “In Another World” and novel “Duck Dive,” and his short story “The Age of Confession” has been published as part of Wisdom House’s short story series, Wipick.
Through the times of relentless self-punishment and repeated “cruel self-exploitation,” he reflects on writing, which “steadfastly corroded the mind,” and on novels, which were “tools for repairing us.”
‘I’ and ‘you’ first met in a novel writing class.
'I', a doctor and writer, and 'you', a publishing company employee, drink alcohol in agony because of the things they love most: books, novels, and art.
‘I’ and ‘you’ become each other’s refuge and rescue team.

The Age of Confession
Author's Note

Into the book
That's why I believed that novels could be a tool not just to repair me, but to repair us all.
Thinking back now, it was a great courage.
They say that people have to endure a little bit of cringe for the joy of life, but after reading the dark history, what I feel now is that at the time, I really loved the act of writing.
What more can I love in the future?

--- pp.15-16

After living as a newborn for several years, I realized two things:
1) To live as a healthy human being, you must not write novels.
2) If you live a new life without writing a novel, you will die quickly.

--- p.21

“When sick people make good art, and when they make good art, even diseases that didn’t exist before appear.” You declared that as you were about to finally resign from your job, which you had only been talking about, and finally open a small bar in Noksapyeong.
Your cynicism was my absolute favorite genre, so I was chuckling and laughing when you tapped me on the shoulder.
“You do bad art in a healthy way.”
--- p.36

As I read, there are times when I think, 'So this is what I like.'
I want to write a piece like that 'sometimes', so I choose a character, choose an event, and choose a setting.
When choices expand exponentially and create an endless loop of choices for every word, sentence, and punctuation mark, the amygdala, running wild, inevitably leads to anxiety, nervousness, and depression.

--- pp.37-38

“Are you really a bookstore that sells alcohol, or a bar that sells books?” You looked at me as if you were dumbfounded at my question.
"Why am I selling books? I'm going to open a bar, alcohol! A house!" Contrary to your serious tone, you looked at the few poetry books I brought and asked repeatedly, "Are those good? A lot of people said they were good."

Publisher's Review
“What more can I love in the future?”
The novel, which was supposed to be a tool to repair me, was actually a needle that pricked me.
Sentences that confess, as if spitting out, that they can't help but love

Author Lee Hyeon-seok, who has keenly sensed and explored this era as a doctor and writer, has published short story collections such as “In Another World” and novel “Duck Dive,” and “The Age of Confession” has been published as part of Wisdom House’s short story series, Wipick.

Even when they curse, saying, “I can’t go to this damn publishing house anymore” (p. 17), and when “my desire to do well is starting to harm me beyond making me unable to write” (p. 22), the two clink glasses, saying, “Let’s do healthy bad art” (p. 38).
‘I’ and ‘you’ become each other’s refuge and rescue team.
'You' eventually quit the publishing company and open a small bar in Noksapyeong, escaping from art first.
Meanwhile, as a writer, I ponder how far I can write about others, and as a doctor, about patients, and where I cannot begin.
Novels trapped in each writer's own worries, interpretations, opinions, or 'complaints.'
'I', who had been wandering around looking for something to write that would move me, ended up not being able to write a single word and returned to my main job, putting aside my identity as a novelist.

Outside of books, novels, and art, days of brief 'healthiness' pass by quietly.
As an occupational medicine specialist, I visit various workplaces to check on the health of employees.
Because employers take health checkups lightly, they are unable to meet with the workers who are actually working in the field, and they end up killing time by joking with the nurses in charge, and end up quitting their 'main job'.
Lying on the living room floor, I recall a poem that said 'you' liked it, when suddenly a disaster text message shakes 'my' dawn.

A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'

Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.

Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, and Lim Sol-ah.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.

Introducing the Wepick Series

Wepick is a short story series from Wisdom House.
It offers a special experience of breathing deeply into ‘one story’.
I dream that this small piece will become a new piece that expands your world, that each small piece will come together to become your story, and that it will become a piece of literature that will be deeply engraved in your heart.
