Description
Book Introduction
“The bird struggles to get out of the egg…
"He who is to be born must destroy a world."

A classic coming-of-age novel about finding your true self.
Hermann Hesse's masterpiece, Demian
Available in a deluxe hardcover with the original first edition cover design.

Hermann Hesse's "Demian," introduced as a "biography of the soul," is his representative work that delicately depicts the thorny path of self-reflection through deep psychoanalysis and self-exploration.
"Demian" is the story of a boy named Sinclair's journey to find himself as he grows into an adult.
In the process, he meets a character named Damian and realizes that the world is not dichotomous, and that both god and devil coexist within each of us.
Enlightenment plays a crucial role in Sinclair's discovery of his true self.
Through these contents, Demian poses questions to modern people about what a self-directed life is and how to lead a life that is true to oneself, and also provides answers to those questions.
That is what makes this book not a book to be read once and finished, but a work worth reading and pondering over many times.

This premium hardcover edition of Cornerstone's original first edition of "Demian" retains the elegance of the first edition published in 1919, but is produced in a luxurious hardcover that you will want to take out and read again and again.
Additionally, the depth of reading has been further enhanced by adding commentary by Professor Emeritus Kim Wook-dong of Sogang University, who is a writer, scholar, and translator.
This adds another layer of enjoyment to reading classic works by conveying the value and meaning of the work to readers.
We hope that through Cornerstone's books, which preserve the heritage of the first edition and add collectible value, you will be able to break out of your own mold and find your true self by savoring the sentences for a long time.

Into the book
I want to focus only on the paths I have taken to find myself.
I, too, have tasted the peaceful moments of my childhood, the magic of the blessed islands and paradise, but I will leave it all behind in the distant light and never set foot there again.

--- p.63

Now a falcon with a sleek and proud head was captured on the canvas.
Against the blue sky, half of its body was embedded in a dark-colored globe, looking like a bird trying to emerge from a giant egg.
The longer I looked at the picture, the more it resembled the colorful sentences that had appeared in my dream.
--- p.112

The bird struggles to come out of the egg.
The egg is the world.
Whoever wants to be born must destroy a world.
The bird flies to God.
The name of the god is Abraxas.
--- p.114

Our conversation went like this.
There was little that was entirely new or surprising.
But every conversation, even the smallest, entered and lodged in the same place inside me like a gentle, continuous hammering.
So it helped me form my self, shed my skin, and break out of the egg.
With each hammering, I lifted my head a little higher and freer, so that my golden bird could poke its beautiful head out of the broken globe.
--- p.133

I sat facing that face for a long time until the light faded from the picture.
And then, slowly, I began to feel that it was not Beatrice or Demian, but me.
The picture didn't look like me and I didn't think it would work.
But it was my life, my inner self, my destiny, or the demon within me.

--- p.106

Finally, he asked me to eat the sentence.
As I swallowed it, I felt, horribly, that the bird carved into the sentence came to life inside me, swelling and eating me from the inside.
I jumped up, filled with fear of death.
--- p.111

Happiness and fear, men and women mingle, the sublime and the terrible intertwine, and a deep sense of guilt pierces through loving innocence.
This was the image that appeared in my sensual dream, and it was also the appearance of Abraxas.
--- p.119

Publisher's Review
Hermann Hesse's painful childhood memories,
Reborn as a book loved by everyone

Sinclair, a 10-year-old boy, grew up in a wealthy family belonging to the 'bright world'.
Then one day, a lie he told to a boy named Franz Kromer to pretend to be strong catches him by the ankle.
Cromer began to harass Sinclair by extorting money from him using the lies he had told as an excuse.
When he hits a snag, he gets help from transfer student Damian to get out of the problem.
As time passed, Sinclair entered Kimnasium and led a dissolute life. Suddenly, the bird with the emblem carved on the door of his hometown came to mind, so he drew it and sent it to Demian.
Afterwards, you will receive a reply from Damian that reads as follows:
“The bird struggles to get out of the egg.
The egg is the world.
Whoever wants to be born must destroy a world.
The bird flies to God.
“The name of the god is Abraxas.”

Demian, a work that represents the essence of 20th-century literature, is also famous as an autobiographical novel that clearly reflects Hermann Hesse's childhood experiences.
Born in 1877, Hesse grew up as the eldest son of a missionary family in a small German city and entered seminary, but his path was not smooth.
After running away from seminary with the determination to become a poet, he worked as a trainee at a clock factory and a bookstore, but he went through a period of ups and downs, including attempting suicide and being hospitalized in a mental hospital.
However, we can see through the book that it was because of these experiences that he was able to complete the coming-of-age novel "Demian," which encapsulates the human life, from growth and trials to overcoming and realization.

The great classic that moves the heart, Demian,
Original first edition high-quality hardcover edition that preserves its heritage
Entering deep into the hearts of modern people

Demian is a novel published in 1919 by Hermann Hesse using the pseudonym Sinclair.
The author of this book was revealed the following year.
This is because Hermann Hesse had no choice but to reveal his name and decline the award when Demian was selected for the Fontane Prize for New Writers.
There are various opinions as to why Hesse chose to hide his identity and publish the novel, but the most popular theory is that Hesse, who was already famous before publishing Demian, wanted to be evaluated for the work itself.
Fortunately, the novel became famous solely for its literary quality, and was met with explosive love by young Germans who were feeling disillusioned during World War I.
Since then, it has established itself as a 'guidebook for inner growth and self-discovery' for young people around the world who are experiencing wandering and confusion.
Questions like 'Who am I?' and 'Where should I go?' are questions that everyone has pondered at least once, but finding answers to these questions and living in this world filled with universal frameworks and common sense is not easy.

In that sense, the journey of the protagonist Sinclair, who goes beyond good and evil to find his true self, provides readers with deep reflection and a new perspective on life just by reading it.
In particular, as can be seen in the phrase “the bird struggles to break out of the egg,” it symbolically suggests a way to realize one’s true nature and mature within it by breaking the mold of existing values and accepting the pain of change and growth.
To reflect on Hesse's philosophy and beliefs, Cornerstone has prepared an 'original first edition deluxe hardcover' of Demian.
The 1919 cover was reproduced as is, and it is a luxurious hardcover book with high collection value.
I hope this will be an opportunity to revisit the value of great classics that remain unchanged over time.
