Summer of Gyehwa
Summer of Gyehwa
Description
Book Introduction
“I wonder if he’ll be back soon, and if so, how soon.”
A thousand-year-old snake and a human's first love, a summery color full of innocence

Author Bae Myung, who demonstrated the essence of three-dimensional storytelling with the full-length novel “Suspicious Oriental Medicine Clinic,” has published “Summer of Gyehwa” as part of Wisdom House’s short story series, Wipick.
The innocent and sorrowful first love of the thousand-year-old snake 'Yeoreum' who could not become a dragon and the girl 'Gyehwa' was melted into the midsummer scenery of the 1970s.
That day happened to be the first auspicious day in a thousand years when the snake finally became a dragon.
The eyes of the Gyehwa on the cliff and the Imugi ascending to the sky meet, and the Imugi, having broken the taboo of not showing its ascension to humans, is torn apart by lightning and falls to the ground.
The insignificant snake, now a snake, grinds its fangs and dreams of the day it will take revenge on that bean-sized thing.
Gyehwa, who knows nothing about anything, brings wild strawberries to the sick-looking Imugi and even names it 'Summer'.
The snake is now circling around, waiting for the plan.

Summer of Gyehwa
Author's Note

Into the book
A terrible disease, dirty, disgusting.
The bad words that came back to him again like the wind that swept into the room without warning drove him crazy.
I didn't want to hold out any longer.
The scaly scars that spread across my upper body were painful, itchy, and unsightly.

---p.22

After waiting for a thousand years, Imugi becomes a dragon and ascends to heaven.
Oh, how tedious and difficult that long wait was.
Now that the time has come, I have used my magic to summon clouds and make the wind blow.
(……) When he lowered his head, he saw a child’s small eyes, the size of a bean, staring at him intently.
What is that guy?
---pp.25-26

“You can’t keep calling me ‘hey, you.’
I named it Summer because we met in the summer.
“How is it, it’s cool?”
It's not that cool.
Are you calling that sacred snake something you like naming someone else's dog?
“Nice to meet you, Summer.
“I’m Bae Gye-hwa!”
---p.39

“You’re ignoring me right now, and I’m going to pull you out of the water and, huh? I’m going to save you, huh? I’m going to breathe on your lips, huh? If word gets out about this, you’re going to be locked out of your marriage!”
---pp.75-76

Summer was happy to chase after the cinnamon all day long.
I followed him to the bus stop and waited for him there.
The scenery of a summer day is still, but when I think of the flowers, the anticipation is also exciting.

---p.88

“Someone said that if you kiss, you’ll end up on the road to marriage.”
(……)
Gyehwa turned around and opened the front door.
Summer, who was standing in front of the entrance, opened her eyes wide in surprise.
He went straight to Summer and kissed her passionately.

---pp.114-115

─I'll be back soon.
I looked at the hastily scribbled words and suddenly burst into tears.
I don't know if he's coming back soon, or if it's soon, or how soon.
---p.138

Publisher's Review
“I wonder if he’ll be back soon, and if so, how soon.”
A thousand-year-old snake and a human's first love, a summery color full of innocence

Author Bae Myung-eun, who demonstrated the essence of three-dimensional storytelling with the full-length novel 『Suspicious Oriental Medicine Clinic』, has published 『Summer of Gyehwa』 as part of Wisdom House's short story series Wipick.
The innocent and sorrowful first love of the thousand-year-old snake 'Yeoreum' who could not become a dragon and the girl 'Gyehwa' was melted into the midsummer scenery of the 1970s.

Gyehwa had a disease called ichthyosis.
It was a painful disease that caused the skin to crack and flake.
The class president, Nam-young, and the neighborhood kids teased Gye-hwa about everything.
Gyehwa, who has not heard from her parents who went to Seoul to work due to the teasing of her children, becomes so sad that she decides to kill herself.
He was determined to write a new legend by throwing himself off the famous cliff where the old fairy is said to have flown into the sky.

Ten years later, Gyehwa overcomes her scaly skin and grows up beautifully.
Nam-yeong, who fell in love with Gye-hwa's appearance, persistently pursues her.
An evil ghost roaming the neighborhood tries to harm her, and an incident occurs where Imoogi, who has been secretly watching Gyehwa, ends up having no choice but to turn into a human.
“Will you remember me?” (Page 91) Imoogi, who unknowingly introduced himself as ‘Summer’, begins to feel his heart pounding.
But it seems that Gyehwa has forgotten all the childhood memories that Imoogi kept, the taste of wild strawberries and the smell of summer.
Perhaps the heavens knew the mind of the Imoogi. One night, Gyehwa, who was being chased by a ghost, runs into the Imoogi's arms.

A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'

Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.

Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, Lim Sol-ah, and Hwang Jeong-eun.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.

Introducing the Wepick Series

Wepick is a short story series from Wisdom House.
It offers a special experience of breathing deeply into ‘one story’.
I dream that this small piece will become a new piece that expands your world, that each small piece will come together to become your story, and that it will become a piece of literature that will be deeply engraved in your heart.
