Book Introduction
A bold debut that shook up the science fiction world,
A 21st-century Martian Robinson Crusoe that heralded the birth of a genius writer.
[New York Times] Bestseller for 74 consecutive weeks
The original novel of the film [The Martian] starring Matt Damon, chosen by 5 million viewers

NASA successfully conducted its third power test on Mars on April 25, 2021, local time.
Since the beginning of human history, Mars has been the primary destination for space exploration and has been a constant object of interest for humans among the planets in the solar system.
It is also seen as a new human settlement by space entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, and H.
It has been a source of imagination for writers such as G. Wells and Ray Bradbury.
If a novel about a unique disaster were written with Mars as the backdrop, what kind of story would it tell?
How would you procure food, how would you breathe on a planet so thinly oxygenated? Above all, what if you were left "alone" on Mars, and what if that lone survivor were the protagonist? "The Martian" embodies all these hypothetical questions.

This book, the debut novel by science fiction genius Andy Weir, is a masterpiece written by proving solid scientific facts one by one while adding the survival story of a man stranded on a space project currently being promoted by NASA.
Also, this problematic work is based on a novel that Andy Weir started posting as a hobby on his blog in 2009, and was first introduced as an e-book in 2011 due to a flood of requests from readers.
Then, through word of mouth, it caught the eye of a representative from Crown, a leading American publishing company, and was finally published as an official edition in 2014.

This novel, whose behind-the-scenes story is like a drama, immediately became a New York Times bestseller, and in 2015, the year after its publication, director Ridley Scott produced and released a film of the same name, making both the novel and the film a box office hit around the world.
It also rose to number one on the bestseller list in the domestic publishing market immediately after its publication.
“I guess it’s fucked up.
Mark Watney's famous line, "That's the conclusion I've reached after careful consideration," struck the readers' minds, and soon led to a wave of rave reviews such as, "There has never been a sci-fi book this readable."
Readers who spent 549 Martian days with Mark Watney were able to laugh at the author's characteristic wit even in desperate situations, and admire the protagonist's outstanding survival instinct and optimism.

This book is a newly revised edition to commemorate the sale of 300,000 copies, and is a special gift to Andy Weir fans as it is a set of the 'Space Trilogy' with the author's new book 'Project Hailmary' and his second novel 'Artemis'.
The set box design was created by designer Seok Yoon, who won awards in the graphic category of the Korea Design Award, adding a unique sensibility.
It's time to revisit this adventure, a blend of scientific knowledge from orbital mechanics to spaceflight knowledge and even botany.

Into the book
Now, let me reveal the real secret of the Mars exploration mission.
This was possible because we had prepared all of our supplies in advance.
All the supplies needed for Mars exploration were already secured through a total of fourteen unmanned resupply missions.
The NASA people did their best to land supplies in one area, and they were actually quite successful in that regard.
Supplies aren't as fragile as humans, so it's okay for them to crash into the ground pretty hard.
However, it is easy to get bounced in all directions.
Naturally, NASA didn't send us to Mars until they were sure all the supplies had reached the Martian surface intact and that none of the containers had ruptured.
A Mars exploration mission takes approximately three years from start to finish, including supply operations.
In fact, by the time the Ares 2 probe was returning to Earth, supplies for the Ares 3 probe had already begun being sent to Mars.

The most important of the pre-arranged supplies is undoubtedly the MAV, or Mars Ascent Vehicle.
It was the vehicle we would use to return to Hermes after completing our Mars exploration mission. The MAV made a soft landing (unlike the other supplies that were thrown in all directions with their instruments attached).
Additionally, MAV was in constant communication with Houston.
If there had been even the slightest problem with the MAV, we would have passed Mars without landing and returned to Earth.

This is not the first concept I came up with.
For decades, people have been trying to figure out how to create soil suitable for growing crops from Martian soil.
I'm just trying it out for the first time.
I searched through the food and found everything I could plant.
For example, peas.
There are also a lot of kidney beans.
I also found some potatoes.
If even one of them can survive the ordeal and sprout, it will be a great achievement.
Vitamins are practically infinite, so now all you need to survive are calories.
Any kind is fine.
The total area of the residential barracks is approximately 92 square meters.
The plan is to dedicate all of this space to growing crops.
I don't mind getting dirt on my feet.
It will require a lot of work, but in any case, the entire floor must be covered to a depth of 10 centimeters.
This means that 9.2 cubic meters of Martian soil must be brought into the barracks.
The amount that can be brought in at one time through the airlock is probably about 0.1 cubic meters, and if you try to shovel the dirt, your back will break.
But if everything goes according to plan, there will be 92 square meters of soil available for growing crops.
I am a botanist! Fear my botanical prowess!

It's like dirty chemistry! That means there's unburned hydrogen in the air right now.
Hydrogen surrounds me.
Just playing around like that, mixed with oxygen.
It was waiting for a single spark to blow up the barracks with a "bang!" Realizing that, my anxious mind calmed somewhat, I grabbed a zip-lock-sized bag, swirled it around, filled it with air, and then sealed it.
Then, after a brief extravehicular activity, we went to the rover.
The rover has an atmospheric analyzer.
Nitrogen: 22 percent.
Oxygen: 9 percent.
Hydrogen: 64 percent.
Since then, I have been taking refuge in this rover.

The barracks are now a hydrogen paradise.
I've been incredibly lucky that the barracks haven't exploded yet.

If only a small static electricity had occurred, I could have become my own 'Hindenburg' (the German aircraft that caused a disaster in 1937 when the hydrogen stored inside exploded - translator's note).
That's why I'm sitting in Rover 2 right now.
The time you can stay here is at most one or two days.
Then the carbon dioxide filters on the rover and my spacesuit will become saturated.
Before that, we need to find a way to solve the problem.
The current residential barracks are bombed.

“The basic communications system used large satellite dishes.
The antenna was blown away in the storm.
“The rest of the emergency communications systems were on the MAV.”
This time, Morris intervened.

“That’s right. MAV is a kind of communication ‘machine.’
It can communicate not only with Earth and Hermes, but also with the satellites around Mars if necessary.
Moreover, since all three are independent systems, communication cannot be lost unless a meteor strikes.”
“The problem is that Captain Lewis and the rest of the team left in the MAV.”
It was Chuck's words.

“So, four separate communication systems became one.
And then one of them broke off.”
Morris concluded.

Venkat said, pinching the bridge of his nose with his finger.

“How could I not have predicted this situation?”
Chuck shrugged and answered.

“I never thought. I really didn't know that someone would be left on Mars without a MAV.”

Publisher's Review
“I will not lose faith for even a second.”
The best day of his life: A man's fierce survival story as he faces death.

Mark Watney, a man stranded in an unimaginable place 225,000,000 km from Earth, is a botanist involved in a Mars exploration project. He safely arrives on Mars aboard the Ares 3 probe after 1,000 days.
On the sixth day of the planned expedition, Watney and his crew are caught in an unexpected sandstorm and communication is lost.
His comrades, who thought him dead, return in fear, and he wakes up alone on a sand dune, with only a few potatoes to survive until the next probe arrives.
Could there be a worse survival scenario than this? Yet, this ingenious scientist managed to plant Earth-like crops on Mars, create water, and farm with oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Meanwhile, NASA video crews finally confirm his survival near the cleared barracks through footage they thought would show Mark Watney's body.

"The Martian" is a work that shows humanity's ambitious efforts through NASA's Mars exploration plan, and it is also a work that many people have been waiting for but no one has been able to write.
The power of this story is evident in its 74 weeks on the bestseller list.
With a unique material that will captivate readers around the world, the protagonist's day-to-day survival story is tense but perfectly crafted.

“A bold and interesting combination.”
A fantastic thriller that blends story, characters, and scientific accuracy.

Humanity's journey toward the red planet Mars has been a record of centuries of longing and challenge.
This book is a perfect combination of actual NASA explorations and footage, and it is also an example of the dramatic contrast between despair and accomplishment often felt in disaster novels, presented in the space of Mars, leaving a lasting impression on the reader.
Andy Weir, a writer who is often called a "genius writer," is a skilled programmer who worked at a U.S. national laboratory at the age of 15 and has since participated in various research and development projects.
Thanks to his background, "The Martian" is evaluated as a work that fully displays the author's unique literary sensibility based on diverse scientific knowledge.

Through this book, we see the support and technological assistance of all people on Earth to save a person left behind on a distant planet, and we are reminded of humanity again.
I cheer for a man I have never met before and cry and laugh at his words.
Even though the process of rescuing Watney, which required spending hundreds of millions of dollars and even the disclosure of national secrets, is difficult to imagine in reality, it still leaves one with the optimistic thought that if humanity were ever faced with such a crisis, it might be possible to attempt something like this.
The novel "The Martian" offers a unique sense of happiness. There is no doubt that this book will be remembered as a masterpiece for years to come.
