Publisher's Review
The real-life character from the film [Ode to My Father], the young Hyun Bong-hak
“General, please.
“Please help our people. If we just leave, the refugees over there will be slaughtered by the Chinese army.”
This is a scene from the 'Hungnam Evacuation Operation' that appears in the beginning of the movie [Ode to My Father], which has attracted over 14 million viewers.
Many viewers have commented that the scene in the beginning of the film where a young man pleads with an American general to evacuate refugees gathered at the port is memorable, but not many people know that this young man is actually the late Dr. Hyun Bong-hak.
Heungnam in December 1950.
In a desperate situation where temperatures were dropping below -30℃ and the Chinese army was closing in on them, the UN forces, cornered by the enemy, were about to withdraw, leaving behind refugees who had filled the beach. A young Korean interpreter grabbed the arm of an American general and made a desperate appeal.
Dr. Hyun Bong-hak (1922-2007), a young interpreter with a medical background at the time, tearfully persuaded Edward Almond, commander of the US 10th Corps, along with Colonel Pony, to take the refugees with him.
Moved by his appeal, Almond eventually abandoned the military supplies and loaded the refugees onto the transport ship.
This operation, also known as the "Christmas Miracle" in 1950, allowed approximately 100,000 refugees to escape to South Korea through the port of Hungnam.
“I went to see Director Almond and explained the situation of the Hamheung people and earnestly requested that he consider the evacuation of civilians.
He sat there with his mouth shut and a serious face, saying nothing.
The Hamheung Christians came to me, a helpless person, and begged me to save them, and each time I went to Almond.
… … I couldn’t just retreat, so I complained, asking where the 200,000 civilians of Hamheung and Heungnam could escape to, where could they go when the enemies were attacking from all sides?
“I had no choice but to cling to God’s will and continue to pray for Him to hasten my return to Korea after completing my studies in the United States.” - From the text

Medical scientist Hyun Bong-hak wins the Israel Davidson Award.
He received the prestigious 'Israel Davidson Award' from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and the Muhlenberg Hospital in New Jersey, where he worked for a long time, named the hospital's pathology laboratory the 'Hyun Bong-hak Clinical Pathology Laboratory' in honor of his achievements.
He also made a significant contribution to introducing the concept and education of modern clinical pathology and systematic laboratory systems to Korea.
In addition, he has been striving to practice sharing by supporting North Korean medical facilities, erecting a monument to Yun Dong-ju, founding the Seo Jae-pil Foundation, and carrying out volunteer work for compatriots in China.
The person who made possible the greatest humanism in human history.
I pray that we all remember and emulate the noble spirit of the late Dr. Bonghak Hyun, who practiced sacrifice and service throughout his life, and who lived with infinite humility and gratitude.
