Book Introduction
A controversial work that shocked Europe at the time of its publication!
Victor Hugo's most accomplished hidden masterpiece, "The Man Who Laughs"

A masterpiece that depicts the clowns' performance hall, slum market, ballroom, and grand castle hidden behind the splendid palace in a splendid yet grotesque way!

The character of Gwynplaine, who had to live his entire life as a man with a torn mouth, leaves a strong impression on us.
Victor Hugo, the French literary giant known for such masterpieces as "Les Misérables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," has written a hidden masterpiece: "The Man Who Laughs." The cover image of the 1869 first edition, published by The Story, reveals the true meaning of human life.

Even in the face of difficult and burdensome reality, we must do our best to smile
A tribute to the countless 'Gwynplaines'

A smiling man who lives with a smile that will never fade, with the corners of his mouth torn.
He always has his mouth hanging from ear to ear.
Even when he is sad, hurt, or angry, he can't stop smiling.
How would it feel to be forced to laugh and always have a smile on your face?
Gwynplaine in "The Man Who Laughs" makes us reflect on the connection between laughter and life.

A person whose thoughts never smile, but whose face is always smiling.
How grotesque is this?
And yet, we are captivated by his laughter.
Because now, in the 21st century, he has been reincarnated and is catching us on the streets everywhere.
There are many Gwynplaines smiling their best in department stores, banks, restaurants, and almost every service industry we pass by every day.
Many Gwynplaines are enduring a harsh reality that is difficult and burdensome but cannot be escaped.
What is clear is that Gwynplaine, though he may seem like a devil, or an angel, or have an incomprehensible smile, possesses human values.
They are now giving someone a smile, comfort, and help.
Aren’t we, who live today, also Gwynplaine?

Into the book
Ancient architects placed bronze sculptures of joyful faces on the facades of ancient Greek theaters.
And that face was called Comodi.
The bronze sculpture appeared to be smiling, causing people to laugh, but it also had a pensive look within it.
All the ridiculous parodies that end in madness, and all the ironies that end in wisdom, were mixed and combined in this bronze face.
The burden of worry and disillusionment, disgust and sadness, condensed upon this calm brow, and ultimately became this sum total of gloom and cheerfulness.
---From "Part 2: Gwynplaine and Dea"

He took a deep breath and continued his speech.
“Which king is the one who brought a smile to my face?
This laughter symbolizes the despair that covers the whole world.
This laughter signifies hatred, forced silence, intense anger and despair.
This laughter is a product of torture.
This laughter is the laughter of power.
If Satan had this laugh, he would have condemned God.
But things that are eternal are different from things that are perishable.
It is absolute and therefore just.
So God hates the actions of kings!”
