Les Misérables, which depicts “how a cursed, lowly man becomes a saint, how he becomes Jesus, how he becomes God,” is a masterpiece of the century that Victor Hugo completed over the course of seventeen years based on a story he had been harboring in his heart for thirty-five years.
This novel is a historical novel that covers the turbulent times of the 19th century, such as the Battle of Waterloo, the Restoration, and the uprisings, and is also a folk novel that captures the difficult lives and sorrows of the people of that time. It is also a work that contains the philosophy and lyricism of a thinker and poet. This novel is in itself “one great world,” and everything that encompasses human life and the world is contained in this work.

This story begins with Jean Valjean, an ignorant and poor country laborer, deciding to start a new life with the trust and love of Bishop Myriel, who forgives him for trying to steal a candlestick. It shows the life of a man who is reborn as a saint through self-sacrifice and atonement.
This work, which caused an explosive sensation as soon as it was published and is even said to be the second most read book in France after the Bible, has been loved for centuries and has been adapted into countless films, musicals, and children's editions, and can be said to be the greatest novel of 19th-century France.

『Les Misérables』, published in five volumes by Minumsa, was translated anew by senior French literature scholar Jeong Gi-su, comparing each volume with the original text (NELSON EDITEURS, Paris, 1956/Classiques Larousse paperback). It can be said that this work will be the beginning and the end of Victor Hugo translations in Korea.
